I watch the video, read some of the comments and realize we are all the same. I literally just finished going through my "screw" collection last week... the wife of course thought i was crazy as I sat at the kitchen table organizing and sorting my inheritance into their vintage 1950's birdseed jars, pasted onto me from my grandfather filled with hardware dating back to the turn of last century. Everyone somehow important and precious to me and not one can be discarded on the off chance that I will be in desperate need of a vintage slotted screw or an antique masonry nail to finish a project. Seeing this did not make me feel less crazy but it did make me feel good to know i have company. Thank you for that.

When I was a kid, I went to visit my Dad's hometown in Kansas. We visited the hardware store with it's wooden floors spinning nail bin and shelves to the ceiling. It even had a great smell about the place. I remember coming home and buying graph paper so I could layout a hardware store that I was going to own one day. Yes I love hardware. I love hardware the way I love the smell of apple and cinnamon or the sound of a mower in the distance on a Spring day. Nice video.

I've found the further back(in decades)you curate hardware from, the more jewl-like and satisfying these humble bits of metal are. The converse also being true. Also the derivations, variations as well as evolving designs in hardware can be interesting to compare!

Wow Scout you are speaking my language! When I was into cars I would go to the area where you could just dump old cars for free and strip out the wiring harnesses and a lot of the bolts and washers. When I got home I would undo the harnesses and roll up all the colour coded wires. Never had to buy wire for my cars again as I always had the right size and colours. I remember seeing a 23 window VW bus there and some guys going around smashing all the windows. Some of the other cars I remember seeing dumped bring tears to my eyes now. Hindsight. Another thing I hang onto is good pieces of steel, especially odd sizes and pieces that will fit inside each other. My wife used to complain until I had to buy some and she saw how much it costs. The biggest problem is keeping it stored neatly. Cheers mate, Stuart 🇦🇺

The typo about screwing the kids to the ceiling got a laugh out of me. Back when my sisters were toddlers Dad had a line of baby food jar lids fastened to the the bottom of the center divider on the work bench in his shop. They were handy for little fasteners that we used for bench work. Dad ran the electrical business as a side line to his job at the foundry. We grew up thinking that helping Dad on his jobs was all part of the fun of being a kid. People complain about not seeing their parents because they work so much. I saw Dad every day when we worked together and when I had school we always had dinner at 7:00 pm. That's when his lunch break was and he would walk home and spend his break there.

I buy a TON of toolboxes and garage lots from estates. I resell lots of hardware. The small lots I find in tool boxes are tossed into a mixed hardware container and sold as a mixed lot. I repackage large lots, like 5 pounds of roofing nails, into smaller packages. I generally use plastic Crystal Light containers. I’m definitely not getting rich, and it’s often not worth the effort, but it keeps buyers coming back for the cheap bargains. I get many “thank you’s” from returning customers: “I appreciate you keeping hardware on the shelves. That last lot that I bought was PERFECT for my last job.” I kinda look at it as a loss leader. It’s generally not worth the time and hassle, but it does sell well, and folks are thankful for it.

There is a trend to have Maker places in the US. Young guys want to do things with their hands but with most of them renting and barely getting by they don't have a place to put tools. When you find one of those big tools that you don't have room for or just can't move. It might be possible to get a group together to setup an abandoned building as a Maker Shed. Back in the late 80's and early 90's there was a movement by efficiency experts to reduce inventory. I was Facilities Manager and Head of the Manufacturing Engineering Department at the United Technologies Plant in Coldwater, MI. UTC bought up companies, stripped them out, and sold off the pieces. The plant where I worked was an aluminum extrusion plant built in the 50's. All the presses were 30 years old and built in the old way. Completely rebuildable and assembled with common fasteners. Corporate had the bright idea that they should scrap out all the warehouse of hydraulic fittings, hoses, and nuts and bolts. I put my foot down. When they bit back I showed them how the plant was arranged and setup for repair and maintenance. We had the maintenance logs for the equipment dating back to original installation. Every part had a purpose. When they closed out the Essex group no one wanted an aluminum extrusion plant with a superfund site in the back yard. UTC will own that ground forever. I moved on to the Douglas Autotech Co. The corporate efficiency experts had already gotten there. They tossed out hundreds of stamping dies, belts, bolts, bearings, and even whole machines that were in a offsite warehouse. The local scrap dealer bid on the lot and for the next 6 years I would call him up and buy back inventory to keep the plant running. I discovered the situation when the sales department got an order for 10,000 switches on a government contract. They were military grade DOD approved switches that Douglas had been making since the Korean war. When the order was given to the stamping room they said the Four Slide for making the parts was in the warehouse. I sent a crew over to bring it back but they said the warehouse was empty. In the 60's the managers had decided that rather than have production floor space filled with machines that were used every 10 years to fill bulk orders for the DOD they would mothball them and run a 10 year supply when stocks got low. The idiots in the efficiency department never asked anyone about why the warehouse was there they just took the bid and added the sales to the bottom line. We ended up paying retail price for items we sold for scrap. The scrap yard guy and I became friends over the 6 years I was there. He told me he built a pole barn just for the stuff from the Douglas warehouse, and the resale paid for it all.

You can never have enough hardware. I used to laugh at my dad when I was younger, he used to remove the hardware from items that were going out to the trash (like old vacuums, etc.), and he would strip all of the screws and other hardware of of them and put them in containers. I inherited these tubs of hardware, and I'll tell you what that has gotten me out of many jams when I needed a certain size screw, nut, etc. When we go up to Bristol Maine to see my in-laws every October, we go to a store called Marden's that's unique to Maine (there are several in different towns). They buy out hardware, tools, clothing, furniture, etc. from stores that go out of business. I always bring back home with me misc. deck screws, nuts & bolts, fender washers, nylon lock nuts, anchors, etc. because they are so cheap per pound. Unfortunately most of the hardware is not in see thru containers, I should switch to the mason jars they are heavy duty glass jars.

I too clumsy to reuse glass jars for a lot of stuff, but occasionally i'll use a pasta sauce jar, but the lids are the weakpoint of those. I did use metal coffee cans all the time in the barn, but they'd rust out. Of course none of my coffee comes in a metal tin anymore, but the store-brand coffee i usually buy has a nice container with a label that comes off really easily. I've found that i can label them nicely with thick masking tape, and that's been working out really well for bigger items like salvaged hinges and casters. Once you label something and it has a designated shelf, it becomes a LOT more useful, because you can find it when you need it.

Another great video. As a "swamp yankee" I shop at our transfer station. There is a "swap shed" where all kinds of things show up(for free). As the old timers are dying off, tool boxes full of tools and or hardware are showing up. The kids don't see any value in tools. The hardware just takes a lot of time to sort. Years ago I picked up a large steel card file cabinet (from a factory library) and have been using it to sort out the boxes. I still have more than a dozen boxes to sort out. It has gotten to the point where I have been passing up smaller things. I did get 3 pieces of 6' x 1/2"NC all thread a couple of weeks ago. I repaid the old gent who brought them in, by telling him how to fix the drill press that he was going to throw out. The chuck wasn't working so I showed him how to take the chuck off. He put a new one on and is happy. Do a good turn daily. Have you ever come across an old catalog from some of the old hardware companies? They can provide hours of interesting reading. The count down to Zagray has started! Good Luck, Rick

To remove any labels gently scrape paper if glossy without scraping plastic. Soak label in wd40 for a while and glue will soften and leave the container in perfect condition. Sometimes leave a moistened paper towel on the label will help in a couple of days it will scrape off easily.

They are awesome to have and can be a life saver for sure, I know I have my collection at home and at work, but they can also be a time waster if you spend 30 minutes looking for something and space waster to something more valuable or useable. Organization and labels are key I would think. Looks like you do a pretty good job at that.

Bradley you are so right! My regular fasteners are in bins that are separated by size and shape so when you need a particular fastener you know right where to go. When you can't find it there then it's time to search the assorted jars! LOL Thanks Bradley!

For a quickie video, this one is monumental in its content and should be mandatory material to be reviewed by engaged couples! I inherited my Grandfather's and some of my Dads (thankfully he is still with us), and have a ton more in my Dad's garage that I know will end up with me one day. Square washers. I have seen thousands of these in use on the metal pins used to hold insulators on crossarms. From top down the pin itself has a threaded cob to hold the glass, a smooth shaft that widens into a collar to keep the pin from dropping through the crossarm, a square metal washer between the collar and top of the crossarm, a threaded portion to go through the crossarm, a round washer to sit up against the bottom of the crossarm, and a nut (typically square). My guess is that the collar sits on a square washer b/c a round washer's shape would easier facilitate the round pin/collar to wear out the top of the round hole in the crossarm through which the pin is inserted. The washer on the bottom, interestingly, has a flat area on one of its edges. A small nail is driven into that flat area to (it seems) keep the washer from rotating. I don't know how it would rotate anyway since a square nut holds it in place.

I use those non dairy creamer containers also. Mostly because I can’t stand throwing out a good container (does that make me a hoarder?) but also they’re good for storing bulky items. If at all possible I hot glue one of whatever the item is to the outside of the container for quick ID.

Hello Ryan! My EDC used to be much more impressive... As a Scoutmaster I had to be prepared at all times for all sorts of events... Now I guess I am paranoid because I live in NYC where EVERYTHING is illegal and the thought o spending the night in the pokey because I was carrying a 3" lockable knife has soured my EDC list... Our Governor just signed a bill making abortions legal up to birth and also making it illegal to confront a person breaking into your home... Now you must try to run away.... Welcome to crazy land!

Our Co-Op still sells all their nuts, bolts, and washers by the pound. I like that mainly because I don't have to make up a bunch of little bags and mark them with their SKU numbers. Just fill a paper bag full of everything and the checkout weighs it.

Back on the early 1970s, a local hardware store was closing due to the owner retiring. After my father heard about this place going out of business, my dad and I jumped in the car and headed there. We left that store with hundreds of small boxes of every nut, bolt and washer imaginable. My dad passed away in 1990 and all those small boxes are now on my basement workroom. I guess this hardware collecting thing must be hereditary. 😊

I know the feeling ... About 40 years ago a local hardware was closing. I asked the owner what he wanted for one island of hardware. He said one hundred bucks. I couldn't get the money out of my wallet fast enough and load as much as I could into the back of my Jeep. He stopped me as I was going for the stove bolts, but, by then, the rear tires on my Jeep were weighted down to about 4". I figure I got about 400 pounds of bolts, lag screws, carriage bolts, wood screws, washers, and nuts. i don't have to make so many trips to the hardware store. I figure I have enough to last me until the year 2075.
