The older I get, the more I’m watching this movie for James Caan’s straight man routine more than Will Ferrell’s crazy one. Every one of his facial reactions is perfect, he knows exactly how to portray this bewildered middle aged businessman exasperated at the presence of this force of chaos that’s been dropped into his life against his will. It’s like he’s portraying a guy who wants to make a drama about a struggling publishing company but the stupid Elf comedy keeps getting in the way. Absolutely perfect casting.
@Stefi-PАй бұрын
I've always thought James Caan is underappreciated. Admittedly, he usually plays the same character in everything, but he's good at it. Rollerball, he's tough and confident on the rollerball court, but as soon as he's talking to his boss or the computer guy, he's suddenly out of his element nervous and subservient.

I'm not sure if this film would've worked as well as it does if it didn't have Will Ferrell playing Buddy. His sense of childlike excitement and wonder is so infectiously charming, his comedic timing is absolutely phenomenal, and his commitment to the part (e.g. eating all those ultra-sweet foods for real and getting really sick afterwards for real) just makes it such an amazing ride. A wonderful Christmas classic.

I overlooked the quality the first time but wasn't really paying attention then. The detailed work put into everything in this is admirable and gives it that living storybook flavor. The physical comedy and especially prop is, well what made for the memorable scenes and is great work to. Reminds of National Lampoons which used a lot of that and getting every drop out of the props. The settings both generated and real are just. I have a thing for that method and especially when they know to take their time and let us get a full panoramic view in as if we were being taken on ride. Then to use that scope to highlight other scale, Buddy's and in comparison, then tight spaces like the bathrooms, workplaces and offices and how they are sort of diminished of life and it's fullness. I mean that right there is a lot of legwork and smart thinking. Over to the expression work to credit the rest of the cast since everyone knows the deal with Will. Having them be softer to emphasize how stark Buddy is and more often story telling through facial acting. I don't think there is even a still that does not tell a story. It is much more than the light goofball comedy it's made out to be.
