seems like everyone wants to go fast; but if they go to fast they get scared; IMO if you try you can play with conviction at any speed; I enjoyed this great lesson I really appreciate you breaking it down so I can understand exactly what you are doing

If the Scottish (?) accent wasn't cool enough, he owns up to not being "A pimple on Shawn Lane's Arse!" which most of us would have to admit. Very cool vid, thanks for posting.

I am too one of them. But because of these masters I have changed my picking style after forty years of playing. Why fight with bad technique when there are easier way to do things ? If it sucks change it.

You can also use tapping to make the big stretches way easier. The augmented stretch is just insane with one hand.

I enjoyed this, and it was so refreshing to watch a guitarist who is both excellent and humble. I laughed out loud when you referred to yourself as "a pimple on Shawn Lane's ass". So funny and so charitable. Thanks for being "real" and presenting this excellent lesson.

I have Shawn Lanes videos when he shows some of these licks, seems about the same speed btw, my pinky is even shorter than Shawns so makes the last one very hard. It took me about 1 year to get the stretches even, but have always found light picking them easier which he says you can do also, and says even more so with a snap to start each string with and sound impressive. I think most tap them but one hand saves time with the pick mayb that why Shawn learnt them this way who knows.

Shawn Lane was also excellent pianist so streches was no problem for him. You must move your left hand thumb lower on the neck and closer the pinky. I have seen some guitarist using left hand thumb on the fretboard. Like Cello players do. Partial barre, I think.

+matrixmonster110 Do short scale guitars help when your hands are small and would like to play like Allan Holdsworth? My reach is 9 -12 -15
@RowanJParker
@RowanJParker 8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Williams That's a respectable stretch. A short scale can help with span issues but the main factor is hand position. Getting the fretting hand into an optimal position can dramatically increase your stretch. As for playing like Holdsworth, as far as I know only one person plays like that. Allan Holdsworth. However, if you want to improve your legato then you can hit me up for Skype lessons. Cheers Rowan

Rowan J Parker I think your legato is as good as his dude. Your very talented and Allan himself would say you're as good as him bud. Once Allan played with a punk band and had fun and actually thought they were good! LOL! Three chords punk rock! Can I really hit you up for some Skype lessons?

+Michael Williams Well Michael, it's very flattering of you to to compare me Holdsworth but believe me there is just no comparison to be made. He's a one off unique musical genius and although I play well I'm nowhere near that league. Onyhoo, if you want to book Skype lessons email me at rowan@rowanjparker.com Cheers Rowan

Rowan J Parker Sure I will hit you up when I have time. But I have to ask you.... Why is his legato so beyond yours here? I don't hear the difference anywhere. You are both smooth and fast. You're doing the legato correctly like him too. It is freaking awesome. I have even heard Allan Holdsworth say people are as good as him. Anything is possible if you learn the technique and with his music you need large hands. There was a time when Allan Holdsworth wasn't as good as he is now. He would even say this too. Listen to Velvet Darkness then listen to his later music.

Hey Rowan, that Les Paul Custom you're playing -- that looks eerily similar to a Les Paul I once owned. It looks like yours has some binding missing on the headstock. Mine did as well. Does yours have several pinhole-sized dents around the input jack? Does yours also have a molded plastic hardshell case? Does it date to some time in the early to mid 1980's? If you answer "yes" to all of those questions, you might very well have a guitar I once owned, and if so, I would be highly interested in buying it back from you.

haha...ever see a guild 'madeira' with mother of pearl letters on the headstack?,and i think the same material for the fret dots...it was a great,great instrument,not perfect...i don't understand how intonation works,,,,,all my guitars,whether acoustic or electric,have been slightly out of tune if you play a chord near the 12th fret,when at the normal position,or further from the 12th fret,it would sound and be in tune.......frustrating! how would one fix the intonation on an acoustic especially---and i can't even get it right on an electric...i think every guitar player even half as good as me should either have or be a guitar technician! the world would be a better,happier place,i guarontee!

So Shawn Lane plays more left hand than right hand, like Alan Hollsworth? He's not really picking all the notes but letting the left hand do the work?
@FatPeaceman
@FatPeaceman 9 жыл бұрын
that depended on what SL was playing there were some killa licks he played with less picking and there were licks he picked nearly every note he had an excellent picking style but didn't use it all the time

i reckon it helps to have a decent instrument,in tune,that has low enough action,unlike most instruments i've ever been able to get my own hands on...so i've learnt everything the hardest possible way--i think that makes me much better than i would have been,had i been spoiled with a nice instrument! but to me,it's better to do it the easy way,if it's on the guitar,if i've learnt anything...for instance,i can do those things great,or even better,using both hands instead of just one hand,making it,in my opinion, unnecessarily difficult! however,i think you're a great player who even i could learn a lot from--i'm in,i think ,about my fortieth year since i first started a-plunkin' 'round on my mom's pretty nice guild madeira acoustic guitar,in 1974...stolen out of my car in 2001....yeah..it wasn't even mine,man--but i'm forever responsible for that...it's a drag...it was a great guitar,but it did need some work....

take any *decent* instrument,and it's like a dream come true--you can literally get twice as good,because the damn thing first sounds great,and also plays so much easier than your typical piece of crap which will never get in tune,let alone stay in tune! the older i get,the more i try to have a lighter touch,to use only as much force as necessary-it pays off in more than a couple ways!

Shawn also mixed them up abit to get even a more mind wrapping effect, like starting with fret 10 on one string then 14 and 18 on the next, and many more different combos also, like 10 and 14, then on another 18. He does this with many of his other licks btw which i personally like alot. As for speed i think he varies it according to the song ''Esperanto'' around 13nps, but sometimes with improv reaches around 15/16 nps with picking even, i dont think the difference in Shawns lagarto or picking changes, he can do both at equal speeds

i just cant get into shawn lane, i've watched a bunch of his live videos and he does nothing for me. Like in this video, repeating a minor triad and just changing the string but staying same frets it might be impressive doing it fast but its musically crap. All shawn lanes solos sound like that, pointless unmusical wankery smothered in effects.
@RowanJParker
@RowanJParker 8 жыл бұрын
Well, that's not a view that's widely held about Shawn's playing. Personally I don't object to outside sounds and it's a bit dismissive and pejorative to say it's all 'wankery' A more honest position would be 'it's not my taste' and as all music is subjective that's fine but your view is not objective nor can it be. It's just opinion. Now a more interesting question might be is it informed opinion or not as there is a great difference between the validity of the two. I would argue that in this case it's not.

Well, to quote master Yoda: Much to learn....you still have. Shawn Lane was the best guitarist that has and and most likely ever will be. He was very musical, had great feel and soul, and mind-blowingly insane technique, but he used it at the right time. I understand that you don't understand his music yet, but give it time. Then you can remove your comment and you will be forgiven. LOL
