These days I call it "forced comedy". It doesn't come naturally like it did with I Love Lucy. The shows back then felt all natural. It felt it was just them being themselves. You mentioned the 90s, one show that comes to mind is Fresh Prince. That was them being themselves.

'Tennessee' Ernie Ford appeared on only 3 episodes "Tennessee Ernie Hangs On", "Tennessee Ernie Visits", and the Season 4 episode titled "Tennessee Bound". In my opinion some of the funniest episodes of the show. In just three episodes he established himself as an icon far beyond the number of appearances just as did Earnest T Bass did in Andy of Mayberry.

Yes whenever I see country-oriented episodes of I LOVE LUCY I always think of them as precursors to THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, especially the DANNY THOMAS SHOW episode that introduces Andy, Aunt Bea and Opie when Danny speeds through Mayberry and gets jailed.

I love it when Vivian and Bill start to dance. Everyone pretty much knows they hated each other in real life and when they had to fight or hurl insults at each other on the show it just seemed so REAL! Because it WAS! But here, they look so happy and it seems they were simply having a wonderful time! Plus it was SO cute! Also the way the audience cracked up when Ethel crowed like a rooster!
