@@slycarlo8747 Perhaps, but to my mind Kurtz understood that war was hell and to win you had to make worse hell than the other guy. He wanted power and understood how to get it. A kind of rational madness. Kilgore loved war. Saw it as sport. Never wanted to go home, win, the war to end. He gets my vote.

@@Moggy471 If you’ve only watched the newest cut of the movie I’d understand where you get that from but in my opinion he was meant to portray the cowards that commanded a lot of these men to go and die. He’s really never shown doing anything in the movie besides ordering other men to commit the violence while he revels in it once the enemy has been dealt with. Even during the helicopter attack scene, he is viewing the entire thing from a distance with Captain Willard through his binoculars. Kurtz embodies the exact opposite leader, a man willing to take himself to the edge of existence to accomplish his own personal goals. Kilgore was only committed to accomplishing the goals he was commanded to do, he might’ve enjoyed it, but they were never his plans, that’s what makes his actions sane.

@@jimmymcjimmyvich9052 Patton didn't flinch. MacArthur didn't flinch. Chesty Puller didn't flinch. In real life, when they were on the front lines. As said, so to speak, in this movie, there are those that know they will not get a scratch.

If there was ever, a movie character, that you could describe as " Gung--Ho "............he`s it !!!!!!! All his lines in Apocalypse Now, are just really really cool, he should have had an Oscar for this performance.

I think it has to do something with human nature. You can geniunely care about a stranded family in front of you, but at the moments notice you rain literal fire and brimstone on your enemies.

Whoosh. The entire scene is about mass murder. The injured child scene was a genius move to show how deranged Kilgore was. Save the kid but reminisce about slaughtering 'stinkin' dinks' 'Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell? The whole hill. Smelled like... victory. Someday this war's gonna end'

I’ve got a friend who died recently who looked just like Robert Duvall. He used to wear a old worn red baseball cap. He used to work on the door at one of my Acid House clubs circa 1989/92. Then he went Hong Kong & did some Raves in the jungle .

One of the top 3 war films ever made IMHO. So well written and acted. Terrific photography. And done BEFORE there was CG!! Details....when the Vietnamese old woman approaches the Col with a baby....they don''t smack the old woman or shoot her and the baby (as would happen in some airhead type war film...low budget"....Col "Duvall" has the baby and old woman taken to safety. Well done. Small things... Would have loved for the same people to have made the movie today....releasing AN on 4k Bluray with a Dolby Atmos track....reference qulity.....

It isn't really a war film though, war isn't its main focus. Its more about morality and philosophy of human nature, a journey into deepest corners of human soul.

Teddy Roosevelt was an officer in the Spanish/American war. He was mounted and bullets were wizzing everywhere. One of his men was hiding in a ditch. Roosevelt scolded him "I'm on a horse! Now get up here!" The soldier stood up and immediately got his head blown off. Years later Roosevelt was quoted saying 'I always felt bad about that one."
