you're so incredibly thoughtful, I can't tell you how much i appreciate and the eagerness with which i approach every upload. i think one of the key things is that it feels like you have such a keen sense of your place in these things -- either in your unique perspective of expertise or in your lack of a broader perspective, posing your questions outward with the audience. this combined with your wealth of knowledge feels like more times than not, you create something whole.

Midnight Marauders is also my favorite Tribe album. One of my favorite albums ever. I heard it right after discovering Hip Hop. Huge influence on me. It's why I make Psychedelic Rap. There are a lot of preservation societies in Hip Hop that hand out lifetime achievement awards. I always prefer those over the Rock Hall of Fame. Hip Hop was half-ass put in once it started making more money than Rock music. It's sales focused. I just don't care about sales. Now they are putting in Kool Herc to correct the mistake. There's no real criteria there either. It's so random.

time to put some meaning to the words “hip hop institution” You speak really well about music in those autobiographic terms. Creating a reality for yourself with an album is a beautiful framing, or liking ‘the imaginative parts’ of wu tang is so wonderful distinction to seem obvious in hindsight, about that group specifically. Its crazy how just a couple words can unlock doors

I was in middle school when I discovered Tribe and De La/Native Tongues. Now, I was always into music because my parents were always listening to stuff like the Doors and Neil Young, but somehow I got into breakdancing in elementary school and Grandmaster Flash/Bambaata. Then came the Beastie Boys, Run DMC, NWA and the Posse, and Public Enemy. But Tribe and the Natives were just on a different vibe. 3 Feet High and Rising and Low End Theory changed my world, and I started seeking out artists more like them, which led me to groups like Organized Konfusion, KMD, the Beatnuts, LONS, etc. Growing up in Utah, the only way I could learn about hip hop was through YO! and reading the shout outs in the liner notes. I learned about a lot of groups in the 90s just by reading those shout outs. Like, for real, I really got into your music, Quelle Chris, etc. because you guys seem to be an extension of what the Natives were doing, but still sticking to your own thing. It doesn't feel weird to me that Tribe is in, but I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Tribe were just never as mainstream as some of the others that are in. I feel like groups like Tribe and De La laid the foundation for other groups and artists to be more independent and do things outside of the "normal" rap box. Other guys who should be in the HOF: Funky 4+1, Treacherous 3, Slick Rick, KRS/BDP, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Juice Crew, Geto Boys, De La, Wu-Tang, Outkast. I mean, I don't really know their criteria, if they have any. I would put Organized Konfusion and Souls of Mischief in because I know how important they are, but I highly doubt corporate America will ever know that.....or care. I don't know why they can't just have a hip-hop hall of fame.

Bashed his knees into the ground three times. Then he got to sit through: Best Pop Male Vocal: Sting (live) Best R&B Male Vocal: Smokey Robinson Album of the Year: U2 (Joshua Tree) Pop Producer of the Year: Narada (Whitney Houston) The album's recording engineers (Bruce Swedien and Humberto Gatica) won though. 🎛️

A cool little nugget about that tribute medley at the HOF ceremony was how they worked in the Scenario Remix before the original Scenario. Kool And The Gang was inducted that night as well. The Scenario Remix uses that Kool and the Gang sample and I'm sure that part of the tribute was a nod to their fellow classmates that night. Dope.

bit of a side bar, but there is something so formative about the first album you remember buying. also cool to see you unpack why midnight marauders resonated so heavily with you at a time you didn't have the "language" to really dissect it or find some kinda meaningful process. the beautiful part is that even without an interest in making music or writing, I think it's easy for people to still pick that up and understand whatever they're listening to is important and meaningful.

Hey Mike, I agree with you in that we need a way to separate ourselves as a Hip-Hop culture and honour the definitive greats of Hip-Hop without any corporate whitewashing. I would hate to be swallowed up in the R&R HOF, whilst neglecting how nuanced Hip-Hop truly has been. It does feel as though there is a begging for permission to be acknowledged and it lends power to forces that haven't a clue about this artform. I do think we need more categories of Hip-Hop beyond the limited genre space awarded. Grammy nomination are not where I would gain references on what I ought to listen to and neither are the BETs/MTVs/VMAs. I am from the older generation and I do not mind digging through crates to discover an artist. I just know this corporate machine is completely ignoring all sorts of different versions of this culture in an intentionally subversive manner. I wish there would be a creation of a database to which we could all submit our music and it be listened to by an alternative audience. I know there are redundancies because sooner or later, sponsorships show up and it becomes about the business. Just an incomplete thought from a Hip-Hop artist. #scarecrowzw

We seem to have a very similar experience regarding our introduction to Tribe as well as our taste around 94. I have two older brothers so I heard Rakim, NWA, EPMD, BDP, Kane etc. Tribe was the first group I discovered by myself and they became MY group. Midnight Marauders released when I was 12 and I played that album more than any other recording in my lifetime. Common’s Resurrection also received so much play from me that following year and to your point, I was also initially disappointed in Beats, rhymes, and life when it dropped. The industry was undergoing a pivotal shift during that time and it seemed like Tribe were trying to find how they fit into the new landscape. I always refer to 96 as the fork in road for the soul of hip hop. De la’s Stakes is high was one direction and then you had PAC’s All eyes on me, Jay with Reasonable Doubt and Nas with It was written serving variations of the other path. De La was warning us of the direction towards hyper consumerism and violence and nearly 30 years later, it was pretty damn prophetic.

Rock and roll Hall of Fame will never encapsulate the full scope of who are the real influential artists. It's like the Grammys. Meant to be taken with a grain of salt. As long as the culture and its followers know, that's all that really matters. The wide mainstream audience aren't meant to f with Chino XL or Doom.
