You hook the ground wire to the preamp. You don't need to hook a ground to the receiver\amp. Phono preamps would be useless if you needed a ground for them. Because the only receivers and amps with ground connections have phono preamps built in. FYI.

So you don’t need a receiver? I mean more power if you do, but you can just run with Turntable, Preamp, and Speakers.. right?

I’m currently sporting a Pro-ject VT-eR vertical table, because I really don’t have much room to play with in my little office cave that I’ve setup. I almost always listen with earphones as well. I think the optional auto shut-off feature should have been worthy of mention (especially while you were back there going over the connection points). This is a brilliant idea for those who would've preferred an automatic model. The other thing I like about this turntable is the removable head shell. Personally, I love having a dedicated mono cartridge. Having the removable head shell allows for a quicker switch from one cart to the other than models with a one piece arm, assuming you are knowledgeable enough to set the recommended tracking force. And I'm actually glad they left off a phono preamp on this model. There are so many good ones on the market. Great review overall. Thanks.

I just got the rt85 this week. I don't have any vinyl yet Ha. I have assembled and connected it to my receiver but still need to make adjustments, your videos along with others will help with that enormously. I am building my home audio system again after many years away, while I've been trying to keep it a budget system, the turntable is one place I felt I needed to invest more money. I was able to get a discount on an open box unit from Fluance, and upon receiving it looked in every way to be an unopened new unit.

I own the RT 85 and it’s magnificent! I had no need for the preamp as my receiver has a phono input. Also, there is no need for the protractor because the cartridge comes pre-aligned.....unless, of course, you like to fiddle. Bottom line, it is a beautiful looking (I got the gloss piano black version) and wonderful sounding turntable. Highly recommended.

Just upgrade from a Technics SL-1900 (thift store find back in high school) to a Pro-Ject Debut Carbon Esprit. I love it's acrylic platter, carbon fiber tone arm, and it has the ability to switch the speed with a button instead of actually touching the belt (I also like that the belt isn't exposed. Not that it makes a difference I just don't like tables with exposed belts) I also went ahead and upgraded the included Ortofon Red to the Blue and WOW. The blue is vastly superior to the Red in a lot of ways. Highly recommend!

I have three turntables. Two of them are quite old, one of which is the one I bought around 1977 new. The third one is the AT LP120 USB that you have. That one is actually the one that gets the most use because it is connected to my computer for headphone use. The one thing they have in common is that they are all direct drive. I sold hi-fi from 1976 through 1983 and learned to love direct drive, for a lot of reasons. Why do I bring all this up? Because I've been watching the growth of the popularity of vinyl and the new TT options available. I've seen an odd resergence of belt drive, fueled by, IMO, the fact that anybody can build a turntable with a chinese motor and belt drive. It takes a more significant company to produce DD turntables. But enough about my DD bias. My point is this, after seeing all the new belt drive offerings (e.g. uTurn), these new Fluance TT's are the first "sanely priced" belt drive TT's I've seen that I'd even consider. And not that it's the only reason, but a major reason is that they offer a removable headshell. I've been around TT's enough to have first hand experience with how inconvenient a TT with non-removable headshell can be. Not a problem with the FLuance. I think this is an excellent TT line for those that want to move up from their AT LP120 USB. But I'd keep the AT LP120 because it's always nice to have something to play 78's as well as those "questionable" garage sale finds. And it is quite durable and very good sounding. But the fluances are an excellent alternative and quite beautiful. And though most won't hear it, they do sound better, though It will usually take headphones to notice it - and an a/b comparison (which is a lot of bother).

FYI, I purchased the RT85T a few months ago, and I really like it. This said, Fluance pre-aligns the cartridge/headshell combination for the RT84T and the RT85T. ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: Forgive me for tacking this onto my earlier comment: I would advise anyone to actually test the tracking force and the anti-skating of EVERY turntable, even Fluance’s. To set the tracking force, I use a very affordable electronic tracking force gauge (which I validate using a vintage Shure mechanical gauge). These can be easily found online. Once I’m sure that I’ve gotten the tracking force right, I test the anti-skating using an old LaserDisc that I bought at a thrift shop. LaserDiscs are approximately the same size as an LP, and have a perfectly smooth surface. And this is what a person wants when testing anti-skating. I drop the needle in the middle of the LaserDisc, and observe whether the tone-arm moves toward the spindle, or toward the outer edge. Adjusting the anti-skating dial, I can bring the tone-arm to a neutral state, and it stays exactly where the needle was dropped. This is proof-positive the the anti-skating is correctly set. Doing this things will deliver the best playback, and reduce wear on your vinyl and your stylii.

@TBNTX
@TBNTX 5 жыл бұрын
@@littledre6648 Tracking force is set to 1.8g, per Ortofon’s recommendations for the 2m Blue. The anti-skating is whatever it takes to keep the tone-arm static on the Laserdisc because it can vary from one turntable to another. with mine, it’s about 2.3g.

May have been said somewhere in these comments, but I have found the easiest way to ground the wire without a ground post is simply to remove one of the screws from the back panel of the amp, slip the ground wire on, and put the screw back on. Done. Easy and clean. Hope this helps someone.

My high school friend in Seattle (class of 1972) and I both own Audio Technica AT LP120 usb's. For me, it's one of three turntables I own, but it was his only turntable. However, he got the bug for something better and I recommended the Fluance RT85. He picked it up a few weeks ago. I visited him last weekend (I live in Kentucky now) and we had a play off of the two turntables. He runs them both through a Radio Shack STA-960 receiver from 1981 70's and uses the AT 120's internal pre-amp through AUX to plug them both in. The AT Preamp is a known weakness of that TT. The sound difference with the Ortofon Blue on the Fluance was noticeable easily to both of us. He dearly loves that turntable. Meanwhile, I told him to run the LP120 through the phono pre-amp on his Radio Shack receiver and run the Fluance through the phono pre-amp of his Marantz 2230 (1972). Those are the perfect combo's in his systems. IMO ' But the funny part is that you and he did the exact same starting point and the exact same upgrade. And if one of my "good" TT's failed, I'd be right behind him. I wear hearing aids. They are all "good enough" for me now

One other comment that I’d like to mention. The 2M Blue cartidge uses a nude eliptical stylus that rides lower in the groove than, say, a conical stylus does. By riding lower in the groove, surface scratches are less audible. And if you replace the 2M Blue needle with the 2M Bronze Nude Fine Line stylus, it rides even deeper.

I have gone from a Pioneer PL-10 belt drive, to an Oracle Alexandria to finally my present VPI HW-19 MK-IV over the years; and in every case I found that using a good spindle bearing oil can make a huge difference regarding unwanted rumble in lowering the noise floor. If you can change/replace the oil I strongly suggest trying out various oils. For the first two mentioned, I got great results with TufOil, as the microscopic Teflon particles smoothed out any imperfections the bearing may have had, and there was never a build-up issue. For the VPI my best results were with Van den Hul Lower Friction (TLF) special oil type I. It made the background extremely quiet --- dead quiet in fact. The best way to remove any existing oil is to use foam tipped swabs, as they leave no torn away residue like paper toweling can.

I got tired of waiting for the RT 85 to be back in stock, so I just bought an RT 82. It doesn't have the acrylic platter and and has an OM-10 stylus instead of a blue, but I already had a blue on my AT120, so I just swapped them. Fluance told me in an email that eventually the acrylic platter will be offered on it's website to order alone, so eventually I can order that and basically have an RT85. You get a really great turntable if you get the RT82,83,84 or 85.

AT-LP60 as well as any other belt-drive turntable at this price, AT-LP3 also included, they all have pitch issues which means they won't spin at the correct speed. I had a Sony PSLX300USB as a starter turntable as I heard only good things about it mostly at it's price range. Sure, for it's price, the sound was amazing, not what you would except from a turntable at that price range. But I realized that it had pitch issues and also you could not replace the cartridge with another one. Also it disapointed me that it had no counter weight and anti-skate so I decided to go for the Audio Technica AT LP5 and I'm more than happy now with it. This is more than ok for me and the speed is constant now, the turntable is direct drive which maintains it's speed and the motor is so silent I can't even hear it, even if I get very close. At it's price it does more than I could ever think of. Now, I don't want some super high fidelity sound and playing any kind of vinyl without skipping which would require investments in ultra expensive high-end turntables, ranging from thousand of dollars to more than 10k. All I want is to enjoy the music with a decent sound at a decent price and with no speed fluctuations, and possibility to upgrade the cartridge at anytime and with any available in the market.

Great looking turntable! Nice price tag. 2m Blue cartridge is a great cartridge. Big bonus! Great looking build quality, love the size of the plinth. Awesome that you can use your own RCA cables to hook it up. Nice work on your review man!

Pioneer PL-250. I like it because it was inexpensive, built when vinyl was king (1979), and it has auto return. Also direct drive.

I have the Audio Technica LP60x Bluetooth. I think it's a significant upgrade from the original. Produces wonderful sound connected to a legacy Goodmans amplifier and 6 speakers. The Bluetooth feature is a great added bonus, but tend to just stick with a traditional wired connection.

I've had my Pro-ject Carbon Esprit for almost a year now. It's paired with a set of Klipsch RP 160m, a Yamaha HTR 6030 and a Pro-ject phono box. I absolutely love this setup, the only thing I'll change is the cartridge at some point. Defiantly going to the Ortofon Blue.

If I'm using an integrated amplifier or a stereo receiver with a built-in phono preamp, I don't need a separate one, right? Especially if the built-in one is high quality?

I've been really tempted to get a Fluance turntable for a while, but I'm actually perfectly happy with the turntable I have, which is a mid 80's Technics SL-QL1 linear tracking turntable. Since I've gone linear, I don't think I'll ever go back to standard pivoting tonearm record players again. No alignment issues, no inner grove distortion because of the tracking angle. I wish someone would make a linear tracking turntable again. I dunno why no one has!!

I have a couple turntables which I absolutely love and my favorites are the audio technical and I love the fact that the audio technic a 140 XP has a Pitch slider control which means I can change the tempo of the song and I love the fact that the audio Teknika the 140 and the 120 are great turntables the 120 exile of because since I have a computer I can digitize all of my vinyl. I love the fact that the audio technic a 140 has three speeds I could play 3345 and 78 records. One of my favorite feature which is not available in the 120 X but it is only available in the 140 XP, and that is the forward and reverse button. I love the fact that in the audio technic a 140 XP, if I want to go back to the same song that I love all I would have to do is push the forward and reverse button play back when the music is played backwards all I would need to do is wait for a few seconds before switching the turntable to make it sound forward which is a great feature and I think every turntable should have the forward and reverse playback it’s a great way to listen to music, that way you don’t have to literally turn the turntable backwards. I love the audio technic I didn’t know how long those things would last I think the audio technic a products can last a long time and when I was reading the description on the audio technic a 140 I was so amazed and reading some of the reviews I was hooked thanks to you Jared for recommending the audio technic a 120 I absolutely love it.

i spin on a technics sl-1210 m3d with an audio technica ls450-lt cartridge (t4p) with atn-132ep stylus has .2x.7 mil nude stylus and it sounds amazing and i love having direct drive and quartz lock and great w&f specs and its also heavy. my other tt is a technics Sl-1100a complete with lid and strobe still thinking of what cart to put on it thinking ortofon om30 stylus on concorde body(arkiv). My vinyl that is not in the best of shape is spun on a technics sl-d93 with at-81cp cart its sounds pretty good. pre amps are rolls vp29 for the 93 and a nad pp 2e on the 1210

Probably a better way to ground the receiver, would be to carefully unscrew one of the screws in the back, enough to slide the grounding connector in there, and then of course screw it back to to secure it in place. May void your receivers warranty, but a cleaner and more proper way of doing it non the less :)

It looks like a solid TT I have the Pro-ject DC with upgrades. My only question is if the vibrations of the speakers doesn’t bother the sound of the turntable because they are place on the same furniture. I think it will be better if you place the speakers on a stand. Nice vid!

If that preamp doesn't do anything about the turntable ground, why have it or use it? I would just bypass it and ground the turntable to the amp (if it has one) or find another method of grounding. When I've needed a preamp, I've never had it pass ground to another component. It was always taken care of at the preamp. Just find that odd. 🤔
