My God! This was my childhood right here! I would always see this commercial at the end of my “I Love Toy Trains” DVDs. My mom always told me that we would visit the store whenever we were in the area if, *and only IF,* I did all of my work in school (which was a rare occurrence to be honest). Sometimes, we would visit the nearby “Oink’s” ice cream shop in the late afternoon (around 3:30-4:00pm) and I would beg my parents to go into the store after we had finished our delicious frozen dairy treats. Sometimes we wouldn’t have enough time to go in, but the few times we did, it was awesome! I remember everything from the main lobby of the store where they had the videos, toys, and boxed train sets to the big room with all of the older trains and layout accessories on display. But my favorite part of the store was, of course, the room with the train layout. It was just so amazing to see all of those big trains running around the layout. They even had the MTH “I Love Toy Trains” freight set running around on top of a mountain! Then, of course, there was the sad day when I saw the big yellow sign on the side of the building that said that they’ve moved the store to a different location. I was just so upset, I didn’t know what to think. They only moved down a few miles to TM’s hometown of Michigan City, Indiana. I’ve never been to that store and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to. They may not open the store after the Christmas season due to the passing of TM’s founder, Tom McComas earlier this year. Rest in peace, Tom. Your videos were some of the best parts of my childhood. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it too if my family was able to continue living closer to the store. Sounds like a train enthusiast's paradise and the recent unfortunate news of Tom's passing really does leave the future of the store uncertain. A small yet notable footnote of my childhood. Godspeed, Tom McComas.
