Interesting topic about hugging patients. When I went to nursing school 17 years ago hugging patients was a big no no. I work as a memory care nurse now and it is encouraged at my work. Most people need and crave physical touch and it helps me to show my patients that I care for them . I love the smiles that I get when I give them a hug before they go to bed at night 🥰
@annaandrea83202 жыл бұрын
I am a European. We don't crave physical touch unless we are intimate with someone. I would never expect a nurse or a doctor to hug me, no matter how attractive they might be.
@SauronsAccntnt2 жыл бұрын
@@annaandrea8320 It's interesting to consider cultural differences in touch, but there are plenty here in the US who would smack a doctor/caregiver who tried to hug them ha. I really think this has nothing to do with how attractive anyone is; especially for a professional. This original comment is coming from a memory care nurse, so she may be working w/ patients who suffer from a lot of confusion and emotional stress & perhaps for those people who *are* soothed by platonic physical contact then that's possibly therapeutic and comforting. Sometimes physical touch is just a pat on the shoulder, maybe it's a hug for someone who doesn't have family who visits, or you read the room and see that touch isn't the right move for someone. Best to you :)
@jaspercandoit2 жыл бұрын
Same as a primary school teacher. It was a big no-no to touch children AT ALL when I qualified... but little children want to sit on your lap, they want to hold your hand and they want a hug when they're sad. Thankfully that rule was relaxed but I still have to worry that a parent will take a well-intentioned interaction as something sinister.
@laceyjaye12622 жыл бұрын
Thank you for what you do! I've worked in a few facilities (only as a dietary aide/in the kitchen & dining room) and at some places I felt like people were so clinical with the residents. These people who are nursing homes are PEOPLE, having physical contact is really important. Even just holding someone's hand while talking can make such a difference.
@laceyjaye12622 жыл бұрын
@@annaandrea8320 where did physical attraction come into it? It's human nature, maybe not a hug but to hold someone's hand or a touch on their shoulder. It shows that you acknowledge them and are listening and can provide comfort, especially in this person's post. It helps people feel connected.

If you read the 5 love languages book, it says that they way we receive and express love may be different. Which explains why you love giving but not receiving gifts. While science may not be able to prove this, I have to admit that by taking the time to pay attention to the things that make my partner feel loved has strengthened our relationship. It is a 2 way street though, if my efforts aren’t reciprocated, then our relationship begins to show strain. Does that make sense?

Sure, it makes total sense. Reciprocation is important. My relationship with someone only ended up getting stressful (eesspecially when I was near them) exactly because of this. After some time it just felt like they didnt even have any feelings left towards me. Like they stopped caring about what I was feeling and it was as if they were completely distant from me, yet wanted everything from my side.... And when i confronted them about this, well, i didnt even recieve an answer. So yeah, it just confirmed my doubts. Im out of that place now, so its ok.

I’ve actually found it’s pretty common to have people have 2 different love languages - their giving one and receiving one. For example, I show love through Acts of Service, but prefer to receive Quality Time. My husband shows love through Gifts, but prefers receiving Physical Touch. And even though none of those match up, understanding that about each other is the key to our success.

About hugging a patient: I had a physical therapist once, he tried very hard to take away the issues I had in my neck. After 6 weeks, 2 treatments a week, he finally succeeded. He jumped, screamed "YES!!!" And gave me a big hug! Absolutely nothing wrong with that, and a very genuine emotion from someone who doubted that it would work, but tried anyway because he wanted to help. From that treatment on I was his patient for 10 years until his retirement.

Here's what it said: "Can helping with homework really be an expression of love? Absolutely! Anything you do to ease the burden of responsibilities weighing on an “Acts of Service” person will speak volumes. The words he or she most wants to hear: “Let me do that for you.” Laziness, broken commitments, and making more work for them tell speakers of this language their feelings don’t matter. Seeing that a lot of people don't understand the love language of gifts and things of that nature, just thought I shed some personal light on that. An old boyfriend of mine loved to buy me things, flowers, food, gifts, you name it. When I asked him why he tries to buy me, he got so heartbroken that I thought that. He explained that he spends his time working very hard for very little money, so the way he sees it his money is his time and hardwork. He's wanting to give me hours of his hardwork, labor, and putting up with job stress just to show me he's thinking of me. I think it's beautiful when you see it that way. Anyways

So in some cases you learn to live in the love language of your parent or parents even though it may not be your primary love language.

This test would be hard to answer. I loved when my late husband and I would just sit and watch TV together, it also meant a lot to me when I would be washing the dishes and he would unexpectedly come help, sometimes gifts meant a lot too, like the time I mentioned that as a 5 foot tall woman the seatbelt always hits my neck and he bought me a clip that pulled it down so it would hit my shoulder. I miss him and all those little moments together.
@XOChristianaNicole3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing. It seems like you had a beautiful marriage. I pray to find that kind of love. I've been thinking that what love languages calls, "languages" are actually parts of speech of one big love language. It's still beneficial to know which parts you care more about, but everyone is going to have specific preferences in each area. I also, added in another part of speech: Boundaries. When I get triggered the way someone navigates my boundaries and doesn't challenge those boundaries, even if they're normally a big hugger, is the number 1 way to get me to eventually calm down enough to access the whole "love language". But people who keep pushing me, inevitably end up blocked.

I feel like the clip for the seatbelt would hit me hard as my SO showing how much they care. One of my favorite gifts from my SO is a nice 3-hole hole punch. I had been fighting with an old hole punch for awhile that kept getting stuck, but I was being subborn and refusing to buy a new one. He surprised me with a brand new one that he had researched reviews for and everything. I almost cried. It made my days a lot better but mostly it showed he had been paying attention to my needs and wanted to help. Sounds like a dumb thing to treasure, but it's those kind of things that I feel shows how much you care the most.

@@shinozsnow not dumb at all! Your comment made me tear up almost as much as the original comment. It's those little stupid things that your someone picks up on that really makes you feel special ❤ I'll throw these little flippant comments out there about something/some issue and my boyfriend will get it or do it and I have these 'wow, he does care' realizations. I remember listening to a speaker on love languages, and he explained that for most people, their love language is usually the same for what they receive and what they give, but not always. Sometimes, you might have one love language for receiving, and a different one that you give. For example, I'm a Quality Time person, but I express my love through Acts of Service.
@EuLiieK3 жыл бұрын
I’m a psychologist and I’ve looked into this for couples therapy. Love languages are mostly so you understand how you like being showed love and your partner knows what to do. That’s why your partner should do it too so you know how they like being showed love. It is important for both to understand each other what they prefer to show and receive affection or love.

True. I like giving gifts to the people I love because I like to see them happy when they're opening them. And the benefit of that is you will never have a failed marriage since you will never marry. And to take your idea further, words are just words. Saying "I love you" is just words. A person should be just as affectionate whether or not the words are said. So, let's not bother saying the words. And gifts are just things. So don't bother with those either. You do you. In other households, the words, the gifts, and the public promise of fidelity and love that is celebrated by all those nearest and dearest has great meaning. And I also say, for people those households, you do you. Let them do their thing and you do your thing. Don't let their celebrations freak you out of make you feel less confident. One of my missionary companions would give me gifts all the time to show that she cared, and she did best when I gave her words of affirmation. Of course, if you're like me and it's physical contact, that's just the best way to show me affection period.

A well-timed hug from a doctor can be absolutely huge for a patient. I spent months finding treatments for a medical condition with a specialist. Mike making fun of the “someone just sitting near me” answer is very funny to me cause, as an autistic person, someone just sitting in the room with me makes me so happy I constantly follow around my parents just so I can be in the same room as them and listen/watch them talk and do things Being in the same room as someone is amazing There’s autistic/ADHD versions of the love languages! - Infodumping (ranting about your hyperfixations or special interests to each other, listening to someone do that, or wanting your partner to listen to you do that) - Parallel play (just being in the same room with each other, engaging in your own activities separate from one another, aka ‘being alone together) - Support swapping (reminding each other to do tasks they struggle to do or remember to do, like taking meds or brushing teeth, or even just eating!) - gift giving (but it’s slightly different- it’s usually giving a small gift that has no use and isn’t especially sentimental, like a rock or a leaf, or a bead that you found! Just sharing small useless things that you found cool) There’s others but I can’t remember them rn! Also! Your love language doesn’t have to be both giving and receiving, you can be on either side!
