the character mary does seems one note if you dont pay enough attention, the point of her character is that you dont have to be an asshole just because you are lonely and bitter. both main characters learned alot from her compassion and grace despite the lowest low of her situation. without her this newfound chemistry between the 3 lead characters wont even developed and will make no sense.

I get the hype for Divine Joy Randolph. I do not understand how this is a feel good movie/story though. SPOILERS ahead: The loss of son, the father with challenges, losing job at the end. It is the best Oscar movie but only because it is better than Oppenheimer, Barbie, Past Lives, and Killers of the Flower Moon not because it blew me away. The Oscar movies have not been great the last two years.

agree with that. It has both ups and downs. To me, it was a bit of a depressing downer. At the same time, you see people struggle to live with all the loss they have suffered, so it was a bit of a suffering movie.

Agree about tone of movie. I did care about the characters. The actors were good. Problem I had with it was the weed and smut and drinking. I don't think it was like that back then as much as they say. The lying, too, but smart people gotta think on the fly and be quick. Gotta say, Giamatti is probably one of the best out there. I'd love to see him do stage solo. Movie reminded me of Scent of a Woman or Dead Poet's Society. I like the retro, too. This really was an American Novel on film, like an Elmer Gantry. It's Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, or John Hersey on film.
