I'm a 22 years old trumpet player/student and this video resonates with me, I always kinda felt bad about my playing, but I was never serious enough to try and change or improve it really. In the past 9 months I did a lot of retrospection and tried to start practicing everyday even on bad days. At the start I would only practice a maxium of 2 hours or so, and around 20-30 minutes on bad days often skipped some. But now my bad days tend to be around 2 hours of practice and good days sometimes up to 6. Since then, my confidence rose up, and my playing as well. I think a lot of the tips you've given can apply to any musician, and I will certainly try to apply some of those!

This video is fantastic. I love self improvement and I study the clarinet, music Ed Major in college. Also pointed out fastest tounger, which I am funny enough. I side hustle on eBay and play saxophone at weddings and other small gigs. I’ve also taught several students. People reading this, this man is right!

#7 is a brutal lesson to learn. I won my first orchestra audition shortly after returning to clarinet setup I used when I was 14. From the ages of 18-24 was a disaster of equipment experimentation. My clarinet was fine. My mouthpiece was fine. So much time and $$$ wasted!

Good advice, Fabian! Only thing I disagreed with was blowing off harmony and other music theory classes. The things you learn in those classes, especially ear training, are so important in your development, especially sight-reading so that you can just glance at a difficult riff of 16th notes or triplets and understand it is simply a re-organized Maj7 chord, etc. Also those music theory concepts are so important for improvising because if you don't have harmony knowledge and a good ear, forget anyone ever wanting to listen to you improvise. I gather you are primarily a classical musician but I still think music theory is essential for any musician who wants to be a professional player.

Number 7 resonated with me, I rocked on with my B45 and Vandoren V12 3 1/2 reeds for over 20 years! I only just switched to the M30 Lyre to shut me up in Concert Band. It was actually the saxophone mouthpieces I needlessly wasted money on (in hindsight), at high school. I should have just taken my teacher's advice from the start and got that Otto Link hard rubber mouthpiece (which I've also been playing for over 20 years).

Highschool woodwind doubler aspiring for a career in music here, how would you recommend balancing practice on multiple instruments, across many different genres? For example, I have a pit orchestra performance coming up, which I am playing clarinet on, and I have my normal concert style band performances as well, along with a bunch of state and county band auditions I have to prepare for, on top of keeping my skill up with flute, oboe, and trumpet, while also playing Alto and Bari sax in small jazz settings and big band settings respectively. I've been having a hard time balancing my improvement on all instruments, while also keeping up with what I have to prepare for my multiple commitments, on top of trying to improve my physical health. Trying to catch on to these professional musician habits while I'm in high school so I can be as successful as possible right out the gate.

@@FNBRVolts i can give you following tip. Write down all of your goals. And then see which „daily activities“ lead to these goals or your desired outcomes. Only do the activities or put your primary focus on those activities that will lead you to your goal day by day.

I don't think you should practice on the instrument EVERY single day, when you're feeling very bad or you are sick, pushing yourself to practice/play can do harm in the long run. I prefer to study different concepts or do mental practice when I'm feeling ill or there's something else hindering me.
@fabianhuegli3 ай бұрын
@@JacksterKAS Fair. I‘m just sharing concepts and mentalities that worked for me. Mental practice is still 4x more effective than practicing on the instrument so I would put it in the clarinet practice category. Actually even the prefered one. If someone feels pain or insane tension he or she should pause for a day or 2 and do some mental practice instead.
