#4 should be #1. Too many people prioritize matters of money above all else, but without good health, you have nothing. All the wealth in the world can't help you if you are weak, feeble and unable to utilize it to enjoy life. For years I prioritized my finances above all else, but a few years ago I refocused on my physical and mental health and have transformed myself and my outlook since then. Of course, I still work OT and save and invest aggressively for my future, but now I balance that with devoting energy to my health and living a little bit more for today.

@@IRISHguitarist777 Readers will want to know how you've earned money over the last 35 years. Coincidentally, I met an Irish guitarist in China who was independently wealthy. In his case, around 55 his parents passed away and he inherited enough money to retire and travel. He was a damn good singer guitarist. Sadly, he had to go back home due to overwhelming illness at around age 63. but readers would probably like to know what you did from 20 to 55 to earn and live debt free?

I am almost 70. I keep running my metal shop. Have almost perfect weight, zero health problems and body age probably better than a lot of 40 years old office rats. Part this is genetics, part of this is my approach: I know I will not stay this way forever, BUT I CAN slow the process down A LOT. Almost every time I read a list of healthy foods or other body care I AM doing it from 60-90%. Psychology: I actively avoid contact with my age group, because they gave up and let themself sink. I can do a horse stance, do stretching while my mill does a cut, but I see the guy 4 years older and it takes him a minute to seat down on a chair. When I try to give them advice, they got angry. I see stairs as a running track, not something to fight and catch the breath when you finally reach the first floor. Try running up the stairs with the hand pressed on the front of the body. Try getting up from the car without grabbing the steering wheel. You will find that your stomach muscles do not exist. Health in old age is a serious project, discipline and persistent work, still not being fanatic about it. Nature abhors standing still: You either grow or you rot. I wish I could get this message across, but humans have invented the DEADLIEST sentence that exists: I AM what I am and I AM NOT going to change. You CAN change at anytime, IF you want. Edit: had a visit form my youngest daughter on Sunday and she took a video, because I want to celebrate my 70th birthday. There are 8 steps to platform to our bank. I've been jumping to the middle and landed on top for years. Now I got a short movie of me doing it. ;))))

That is great! I'm closing in on 60 next year. Not on any meds. My doctor is surprised. My peers are all on cholesterol medication, blood pressure medication, diabetes meds, etc. The younger guys in the office are overweight, man boobs etc. I have an office job but I am very active outside of work. In great shape physically and mentally. Too many people get in a rut and wake up one day wondering how they got into such bad shape. Worse with older people. I see them pretty much wasting away once they hit their 50's. It doesn't have to be that way!

@@madcow3k not really, I am mostly kidding about being a child at fifty. At my age, everybody pretty much looks young but unless I look in the mirror, I still think I am thirty. Mostly, I don’t see age anymore, I just see every adult as they are and don’t think about age. Trust me, there are still lots of people my age that are wondering what they will be when they grow up. I have certainly seen twenty somethings that seem more mature than a lot of idiots my age that I run into. Mostly it boils down to attitude. Some have already calcified in their mind in their twenties and I know people in their 80s that never lost their youth. Keep an open mind, take your retirement in installments as you go because you can certainly do things when you are younger that you can’t do when you are older. The saddest thing is somebody that put everything off until they retired only to find out they are too wore out to do the adventure they dreamed of when they had the body and the energy to do it. I think age thirty five is a persons physical peak and I felt strong and vigorous well into my fifties. Slowing down a bit now, that’s for sure but I still get it up for canoe trips, hunting and adventure trips. Instead of running all day and partying all night I am pretty much done by 9. 😁

For me loneliness is one of the worst suffering in old age. Human companionship comes at a price. If someone can't afford that, even pets would do. If someone can't afford even pets then he must think about the choices he made during his younger days, and change the habits that landed him in such a place. It's never too late till one is breathing.

59yr old here, 60 before the years out. Retired last November as I’d had enough of that (it was a job, not a vocation) gave my little garden a complete overhaul, had three holidays and spend my days walking the dog, day tripping & planning a house makeover in the Autumn. Started that list of books I’ve planned reading since forever and looking forward to a winter getaway. Haven’t missed anything of my old life, except my old colleagues but am still in touch & planning a reunion meet up soon. This is what I worked for all those years. Not wealthy, I have enough to get by & am perfectly happy with that.

I have lived pretty far away from my parents since my teenage year to this day. I can only afford to spend time with them between four weeks and couple months every year. During my 20s, I have asked myself one question in total honesty. "What is the number one thing I am afraid I will regret the most?" My guts told me, I'm scare to regret that I haven't spent enough time with my parents after they are gone. Since then, I have dedicated most of my annual leave plus working remotely to be with my parents for the last 30 yrs. I could have saved myself a big lump sum to see them less but I could not look at myself in the mirror every morning. At my dad's funeral, I thought could I spend more time have a drink, watch some TV or joke with him? Sure but I don't have a single sense of regret that I haven't done enough. If your parents are still alive, give them a surprise visit or ask them anywhere they want to see but they haven't been. It's never too late.

Thanks for this video, Ken. Life is race between maturity and senility. For those of us who had very traumatic upbringings and are late bloomers, it's hard to grieve the loss of the life you could have led had you been more normal. But better late than never. Turning 50 means you probably have, on average, another 25-35 years left as a man. That is still a lot of time. For men who never had a family and want one, I think realistically a 50 yr old man could look for a 35 year old woman and still have 1 or 2 kids.

I turned 61 this year. Read the comments and pay close attention to what the old timers are saying. Stay active and monitor your overall body health if you want to live to old age. Little sacrifices can make a huge difference in longevity. Save money for retirement. Start now. I don't care if it's $50 every time you get paid. You might be able to retire early if you start saving early. I will retire in 3 more years after working since I was 14. I should have already been retired but I made some bad decisions and was not studious in planning for retirement. I got serious about it when I was 36 years old and just by the skin of my teeth I will pull it off. What I mean is have the same income in retirement as I am making now. Good luck.

@@Mobev1 If you are ready to hear it I can tell you, our true essence is our soul and our natural state is to be energy and we are all connected to the "source", being raised a roman catholic I take that to be Heaven in my paradigm. Our time here on earth is for a reason we choose and plan to accomplish what can only be done as a flesh and blood human being - think of our bodies as avatars - we come here, use them, learn or do what we came here to do, then shed them and go "home". I have watched hundreds of NDE testimonies and have gone through some medical procedures that have me convinced this is likely the truth - after we die we remain who we are but in spirit form (our natural form) go back home - we purposely have a veil put over our memory of who we really are so it wont interfere with our mission as a human - I know, it sounds very new age and weird BUT I also believe it's the truth - therefore, we have nothing to fear from death, it's just and end to our short vacation as a human and we go back to the source/creator/heaven/Jesus - however you choose to see it.

I wish I had not abused my body so much during my youth in the name of “getting the job done.”

Agree. I feel great with daily conscious maintenance. Let’s be mindful not to repeat that we’re getting old too often. I’m trying to avoid saying things like, ‘I’m old’ or ‘I’m sad.’ Instead, I focus on doing the right things to lift my mood. I avoid sending negative messages, as I don’t want to program my brain with those thoughts. I’d rather say, ‘Sorry, I’m busy rebuilding my business,’ because that’s the reality, instead of saying, ‘Sorry, I’m so old.’ I agree on prioritizing high-quality coffee, steak, oxygen, and being in a good place with good surroundings. Indeed, despite everything we can control, we never know what’s ahead. This is why being grateful for what was and what is helps put things into perspective-understanding that while my problems are important to me, there are much bigger problems and greater suffering that others endure. It’s key to think about things on a macro level, especially when comparing our situations to others. However, when making decisions, it’s important to focus on the micro level, paying attention to the details that matter in the moment. ‘If not now, then when? If not me, then who?’ This is the moment to act. If you’ve ever dreamed of living near a golf course or moving to Italy, now is the time to make it happen. Whatever your aspirations, this is the time to pursue them, because we never know what the future holds. Equally important is the balance between doing things correctly and embracing a little risk. I remind myself to keep a sense of adventure alive and, most importantly, to keep my heart open. With thanks.

59 here, too. One does get better at saying "no" or adopting an attitude of "enough". Being true to oneself is so important, but some distract themselves with "activities" as in their younger years, because an unfounded fear being true to oneself may lead you to a sense of "Is that all there is" on the back half of yor life. In one's 50's, it's a good time to resolve conundrums in one's life that have been holding you back from being true to yourself and brying the hatchet on such matters.

All good advice. At 60, well if you are in the corporate world, be preparing your exit strategy. Regardless of your parents longevity, there is a likely hood you will live longer or even shorter - you do not get to know unless you are seriously ill. I plan retirements, my advice, learn to be happy with less, just breathing the air, going for a walk, enjoying your children and grandchildren if you have a good relationship and have any. Enjoy the simple pleasures and I 100% agree, say no no no, but also try saying yes when it can be a new experience. The most terrible mistake is worry, it can eat you up and destroy all your days. Find a relationship with God and know everything is ultimately for the best. Let those we lost stay in your heart, but keep living. Let go of material possessions that own you as much as possible. Peace.

I'm 59, in good shape, exercise, eat right, take care of myself and feel like I always have, no different than in my twenties. I love my job, so I'm planning on staying until I'm 74. There are a few people younger at work that have health issues, don't exercise, smoke, drink and eat crap. They act so old, while I run circles around them. Stay active, eat right and stay young. I enjoy every minute of every day.

I don't like the way people talk about health as a duty or chore or thing to maintain, it's so dull. I just feel ugh about it when I think about it like that. I started working out after I quit smoking and to me, doing a few sets or going for walk or whatever, I call it a cigarette. I get high and I do it when I'm stressed to cope. I like it when people say, "maybe it's too much" because then it feels like something bad. I like bad things.

Very helpful video, nicely articulated points. Thank you. Time seems to move faster as I get older. 53 and retired. Children send grandchildren to visit these days. Now I am growing a large garden, feeding the local wildlife, and making videos of our interactions with the wild animals. My grandfather would be proud. He worked until he was 65 and went home to our Creator 8 years later. I think the points this gentlman made in this video are quite valid.
