I deliver sandwiches for Jimmy John's in Winston-Salem, NC. The best advice is "pay attention to detail." Nothing will slow you down more that forgetting a drink, going to 200 E. First St. in stead of 200 W. First St., or not checking to see if the chips were put in the bag.

This is one of the most inspiring stories I've seen. Thanks, Christina! I love riding. I commute into work 15k and home 15k. I'm getting a PhD and will work part-time in my field, but I love riding so much that I am seriously thinking about messengering full-time and working in my other field around that schedule. I"m extremely competitive, I love to move fast and I'm smart, but assertive. I like long weekend rides to be sure, but my favorite riding is fast urban riding and yeah, I'd love to race. Didn't realize there was messenger racing.

I totally get her feeling about this job. I'm an immigrant living in Chile. Last year, me and my friends began to work as Uber Eats delivery guys on bikes, we all save some money to buy motorcycles and be "faster" in our jobs... but I finally didn't buy one (they did). I love riding my bike, even with cons like the weather here or riding uphill. This is something only a fellow bike messenger will understand.

So I get him to give me like 15 on top of all the shots I'd had. Maybe he thought I'd die, but he doesn't know I'm Dr Who in this MFer. Notice that she is riding with gears, where as it seems that most couriers i have seen on youtube are biking single speed or fixed. For all the bike couriers out there, what are you guys riding and why? What are the upsides and downsides to it? (Would be interesting to know)
@numbaoneg1018 жыл бұрын
fixed gear bikes have minimal maintenance, change the chain, cog, every now and then, but if you ride brakeless or even with a brake maintenance is easy and cheap, single speed (freewheel) you need to lube brake cables and adjust brakes, but its still minimal maintenance, now geared bikes require tuneups so that shifting works properly and if it rains, snows it takes more work to clean, some ppl will have diff bikes for diff seasons and weather

@Onyxaxe8 жыл бұрын
You have to factor in bike theft too. Off the shelf fixed gears are cheaper. The non flashy aluminum ones anyway. That and bumps and scrapes at work could affect the derailleurs etc etc. Depends on what the riders preference is. Not a messenger BTW, just a commuter at this point.

+uh anna Bike messenger deliveries are often less than an hour. Most of the clients for bike couriers are law firms, accountants, companies that deal with legal documents. They can't send emails, because they often need to move original copies of documents, so the bike courier is their best bet. Bike couriers are also faster than any other mode of transport in a city environment, and more reliable (It's not like UPS where your package can just end up in a sorting facility).

Most bike messengers in San Francisco are drug addicts now. I messengered in SF for 18 years during the late 90s to 2020 on and off. At the time there were a high number of bike racers in the messenger world. The current messengers got kicked out of the old hang out at the wall and 1 post for drug dealing and leaving trash everywhere. Now they hang out on the Embarcadero in front the Ferry Building. Messenger bars are non-existent, alley cat races sporadic. It's a kicking, screaming and dying industry here in SF. At one point there were around 600 bike messengers. Now maybe there are around 20 real bike messengers and about 200 food delivery and most of the food delivery bikers barely speak English or are drug addicts or fly by nights vagrants.

@@shreddersaurusrex323 Then bike messaging isn’t for you! These big corporate food delivery companies care nothing of your well-being. We (Bike Messengers) fought for decades to earn a living wage. We finally achieved this by Unionising. But now real bike messengering Isn’t what it use to be. Food delivery has destroyed our livelihoods and have pushed out real bike messengers. The majority of the food delivery bikers don’t even speak English or know our laws and care nothing of community. Bike messengers we had a community but now food delivery bikers are fly by night transients.
