I was genuinely expecting it to be a very solid piece of writing, knowing it was written by an ex member of the force, I felt like there would be a level of realism and that classic NoSleep “maybe this could have actually happened” vibes. I spaced out of a lot of the weirder moments in the middle but when the ending and resolution came in full swing, I was switching between dying laughing at the poor conclusion and just being flat out disappointed. The story would be going one way and somewhat hook me in, and then absolutely train wreck in the next line. Also the random depictions of sexism were Dhar Mann levels of goofy. “They were all young, attractive ditzy women….whores.” “You mean they were prostitutes?” “No, just blonde.”

Seriously, he just kinda decided to shoot her for literally no reason the, like, 12th time she showed up to the house. No reason this time was different from the previous times. Heck, even finding/opening the safe would do nothing as it was just some family photos. Also why did the victim hide the only evidence of her past life in a safe in the house of the man she was turning over to the ATF, nowhere else but possibly the worst location? Pretty sure that witness protection also isn't going to separate you from your kids either so this whole thing is just so flimsy

Having a good ending has to be the hardest thing about writing. The build-up, breadcrumbs, setting the scene, action is always the best and arguably the easiest. Getting that perfect ending that makes all the time and effort worthwhile is where a lot of stories fall flat.
@robertwaksberg
@robertwaksberg 2 ай бұрын
This entire story was written with the intention of a female cop getting out her insecurities and anger over being a female cop, not with the intention of actually being invigorating or having a message/theme. The main character holds the exact same traits as the author, has the same job, and constantly faces unfair scrutiny and sexism while never displaying a character flaw herself. When finally placed into conflict she uses a John Wick level move then overpowers and wins the battle before a 3-page expedition dump ending the story. This is the definition of a Mary Sue.
@pankace3296
@pankace3296 2 ай бұрын
@ I certainly agree. But sometimes (like in this case) it feels like they don't even try. Central conflict gets wrapped up in three sentences, main character gets a medal and congratulations from all their peers, grouchy doubting superiors apologize and promise never to doubt them again, etc. It feels almost cartoonishly contrived when compelling, slow burning stories end like this. Like the writer got bored and gave their character an easy happy ending because they wanted to write something else

There is a way you can do it in a story and still have it be compelling and realistic. I'm sure she did face a lot of that, and cops tend to not be the most...gentle and welcoming to outsiders. But you have to approach it where people still see them as actual people and the story isn't just a Grimm's parable about treating people fairly lol Not about sexism but racism, I think In the Heat of the Night tackles prejudice among the police really well while still having a super compelling story.

The info dump at the end reminded me of the original Psycho. Like the audience isn't smart to make the connections, so you get a word for word explanation on what happened and how you're supposed to react.

@@Tigershark5639 nah, it's pretty much same structure like barrasca where beginning is spooky mystery story where it seems to be supernatural and later on it got real life explanation. the beginnning with those 911 fake calls, small changes of a deserted house and so on was horror inspired. Also this story tries to still be supernatural at the end since those 911 was never explained and one guy alured it was a ghost or some sort of it.

45 year old mom here, I just ordered my son his CreepCast hoodie, and hope he gets it before Christmas. I told him he should get me one too, so we can wear them when we listen to Creep Cast episode together. This is literally the one thing we enjoy listening to together when he has to take me places(I’m legally blind). But he told me that’s not gonna happen because he isn’t 12 and made a reference to. Diary of a Wimpy kid names Riley and his mom. If by some miracle, Hunter or Isaiah happen to see my comment will you please reply and tell him it would be totally cool if we both wore our hoodies together? Please and thank you. God bless
