Well, I’m in my right mind, until that little spring loaded carbon brush that powers your horn button starts squeaking when you even twitch the steering. When you keep a truck a couple of decades, this will happen a few times. I pull the wheel and clean/lube the contact and the ring. I always mark the wheel before removing, so I have a reference point. I got an alignment done, and when it all settled out, the wheel was wrong, so that became the day on which the horn contact got the business, and I adjusted the wheel one notch off the mark. Two birds, one ACME anvil. Love the videos!!

When the box is on the high spot*, That's much easier than bending or "straightening" the drag link to get the wheel straight. *The "High Spot" isn't just one "spot", It's ~ 45 degrees off center in either direction as well, So moving the spline is fine--except on boxes that have an indexing flat, then you can't do it and it's back to the drag link.

There was a place in Charlotte, NC; I think they were Carolina Truck Alignment, or something something. My Dad was a NC truck inspector and always used them with the fleet of 80 trucks. Like you they specialized in semi suspensions. Out of necessity of course, after one is wrecked it has to be done. Dad liked them, because they did one thing and did it right. Even his garage could rebuild a mean 170hp detroit for the 83 GMC Astros, but they needed a shop that did one thing really well, without installing all YOUR alignment equipment in their 3 bay garage... I feel sure with 80 trucks they could get as good as you. But that's another $500K investment for equipment way back in 1983...... OR more $ than that.... A garage like his is simply going to BS a truck back on the road. Where when Carolina Truck said it needed to be done, the president of the company listened! They would have never convinced management of the foam company to do the repairs. So they always sent out to a shop like this that specialized in it. A company that buys 80 1983 GMC Astros thinks their job on the trucks is finished for 25 years at least.... Just change the oil. They kept that 3 bay garage hot with rebuilds within a few years.... Talk about getting crapped on. They had at least 10 trucks in 5 years to just be sitting parts trucks.... some weren't even "rollers" anymore..... Dad got fired from the garage for simply fixing a truck that cost too much to fix, vs parking it... They fired 5 truck drivers every week for years, so there's that as well. 55mph clocks that only allowed 3 times over 55 for 5 seconds. Over 3 and fired. Some parked their truck in Vegas and left them... They already knew the clock was going to fire them....

My only question is, did you center the steering box so you have roughly the same angle at full lock in both directions? If you did that, as a finale adjustment of the wheel, this is a perfectly acceptable fix. Now, most of the trucks that you work on are a bit bent to start with so making unusual adjustments on occasion is probably called for.

Funny story. I’m too small to work on them big trucks so I work on cars and small truck instead. Beginning of my career in the 80’s I did my first alignment on a VW Rabbit. They only had one adjustable tie rod so you had to pull and center the steering wheel after alignment. So my boss told me to loosen the nut and go for a drive and then just remove the wheel and center. Only in my case I loosened the nut but never popped the loose on the taper. So I’m going down the road and I removed the nut to reposition. It wasn’t loose so I tugged on the wheel. Imagine my surprise when it finally broke loose and I was going down the road with a wheel in my hand and the car started drifting. Almost had to change my diaper after finding the steering shaft in a panic. Just think I almost made the Darwin awards calendar.

If you are a fool I must be one too. Way long time ago I was a big truck mechanic. Also worked on light duty trucks and heavy equipment. Did that for about three years. But I had actually went to trade school for welding and I got tired of trying to scrub used black Detroit oil off my skin and wash it out of my clothes. So I’ve been fabricating and welding the last thirty years. 25 of them years was at a shop was ASME N&U stamp certified. That’s nuclear and pressure vessel. Give me a second, I’m getting to it. Credentials first. So trust me when I say it. Everything I’ve seen Devin do to straighten trucks is exactly the same thing I do to straighten a weldment. As a mechanic even though it was a short time when I did it full time. I’ve done everything there is to be done. Including cab replacement. So I can say Devin is probably the in top 10% of mechanics. But what do you think I get when I make a statement about welding on the internet? I had about 28,000 hrs of tig welding experience the first seven years I worked at my last place of employment. The one that was nuclear certified (there’s only about 30 in the country). Yeah that’s right I get some idiot with zero experience and a cheap welder that watches Bad Chad and builds hot rods in his garage that tells me I’m wrong. Yeah right. All I can say Devin is keeping on bending and let them get bent over it. I would work with you any day! I gotta head over to eBay and get me one of those pointers. 😂
