Responding; I have a 2004 Avalon. It runs perfectly . . . like the first day. 1. After 17 years, I replaced the head light assemblies. I have calendared to polish the headlights with protector every 3 months. 2. I have lifetime alignment. The balance and tire rotation are free. The roads are crummy. I have the wheels inspected, rotated and balanced every 5000 miles. 3. I hear the 10 year recommendation on radiator fluid. The average radiator lasts 10 years. I almost doubled that time by changing the fluid more often. The concern isn't primarily that the radiator will fail, it is that not changing the fluid will cause more than the radiator damage. 4. I have done the AT205 routine under the car for over a decade. Yes, I have an outstanding mechanic. However, the employees keep changing. If you give written instructions of what to spray under the car, you make the working mechanic notice small problems before they become large problems. Moreover, when you lubricate parts, the failure of seals will be prolonged.

8:27 Met a girl recently who was driving a 2012 Corolla that she later told me she had bought brand new in 2012. We started driving around in her car a lot and one day her check engine light started flashing while we were driving so we pulled over and it ended up being her spark plugs causing a misfire. She took it to a place after that and they replaced the spark plugs and I asked her if she’d ever had them replaced since she’d had that car and she said no and not only that, she really had nothing replaced at ALL on the car until then. 232k miles she had on the car with the same original spark plugs, now replaced.

1. Use Plaxis to polish plastic headlights, trim, dast etc. - 3-4x year, protects against UV. 2. Use spray silicone on window runners to keep glass sliding easy, save motor wear 1-2x year. keeps ice buildup off in winter. 3. Newer cars with electric power steering - maintain your battery - clean terminals, tight wires - Toyota elec steering best. Ford puts them on bottom of car, & Ford, GM, JEEPS fail alot. Also cars w electric thermostats, etc. Makes sure these electronics get even, consitent, sufficient power, saving the electronic motors & parts, water pumps... 4. Change spark plugs - irridium plugs good for some cars (all?) 5. Change radiator fluid - water pump radiator wont go bad. Aluminum radiators will corrode even more than steel.

To restore very yellowed plastic headlights: mask around the headlight assembly. Use 600 grit wet or dry sandpaper and buff the plastic to smooth it as much as possible. Wash with soapy water and dry. Then saturate a soft cotton rag or an old teeshirt with acetone. Do one swipe across the headlamp. The acetone melts plastic. A single swipe will make the plastic perfectly clear again. It leaves barely perceptible creases across the plastic, but the plastic will remain clear for about two years.

You want to talk Tire Importance; when I see a car in a parking lot, low tires, I leave a postanote! And any tire run a few miles at 15 lbs, well they have destroyed the sidewall integrity. Tires are not designed to Flex to that degree the inside crumbles , it won’t show outside ! And that is the person sitting beside the road after a 70 mph interstate run ! I was averaging 21,000 miles pr year on my goldwing (209,044 mi currently). Tire pressure is paramount. Checking them every two weeks is Not too often! Check for cuts from road debris (had a piece of fine wire working its way in, glad I caught that) ! And Scotty , remind viewers that cold winter temperatures will let perfectly fine tires let air work past the rims, so Every March definitely check pressures.

Scotty, thanks for all your great advice to us amateur car maintenance and repair people. I have a Toyota 2007 Matrix with over 122,000 miles on it. It runs like nearly new. On the freeway in Los Angeles it has no problems getting up to 80 mph and over to merge and flow with traffic. I do try to maintain about 70 mph on longer trips because I do not want to stress the engine more than necessary. My Toyota 2007 Matrix is a Corolla. Because of you and good maintenance it runs very well. I have changed nearly everything under the hood except for any major engine repairs. The best is to buy a basic or much better OBD2 diagnostic computer reading / analyzing tool for your car. Even spending a few hundred dollars will save you even more money over time by telling you the problems with check engine light on your car. The dealer can and will charge you over $100 just to tell you what is wrong with your car with a check engine light. My toyota 2007 Matrix plastic headlights were very yellow and clouded. I just used some aluminum polish from Walmart that restored over 95% of clarity to my plastic lenses. Then I used clear UV plastic spray to protect them for another year. I made the mistake parking my Matrix in the intense afternoon in Southern California facing the west for 7 days a week 24 hours a day for many years. I even changed the alternator, water pump, drive belt and tension er under the hood. That turned out very well but was full of surprises. I had to loosen the 4 engine mounting bolts to lift the engine over 1 to 2 inches to remove and replace the bolt for the engine tension device.
