Excited for this. You're not kidding about it how heavy they are. I've used my buddies and it's a 2 man proposition to carry it rigged out unless you're comfortable dragging it. I did significant damage to my Old Town Pack 12 canoe when dealing with a capsize and a loose dog in a panic moment dragging it up a rough boat ramp in a hurry trying to catch my dog.

Yowza. Was it repairable?

@@SasquatchComposites It didn't go thru. I have always intended to do the Kevlar patch, but I've done a fair amount of fiberglassing using West System epoxy and I have my doubts about it sticking to the Old Town roto molded plastic hull when is somewhat flexible. Probably not that bad right there next to the stem, but I'm sure it wouldn't if about 5' further back. That boat "ramp" would probably be classed a 4-8grit if it was sandpaper. Like I said, it was a full panic moment, with not a lot of time to fully think of other options.

@@lunkydog I'm honestly not even sure if epoxy would stick to the rotomolded kayak. I'm not sure what plastic they use, but a lot of those thermoplastics are notoriously hard to bond to.

If you are using XPS you might try using the regular Great Stuff foam on the joints in addition to the tape. Tape the joint on one face. Bend open the joint and run a bead of great stuff. Close the joint and tape the other face. ETA: Great project BTW! I'm anxious to see how it goes.

I would suggest a 4" wide strip of Kevlar maybe 3' long on the keel of the whichever end you might be dragging, probably the bow end.

Way ahead of ya :) Planning on running a strip along the entire hull. I ordered kevlar braided sleeve for just this purpose.

Looks awesome. Your info is great. I’m thinking of making some carbon hydrofoils based on existing products. Thought is to make a top and bottom mold, inject pu, then laminate and vacuum with carbon/epoxy. Make sense?

So bud, I've been looking for channel or video where it shows how to reinforce a body part with composite from the inside, also make broken locks & clips on the same part to screw it or whatever mechanism it uses to hold the part and stuff, am I making any sense? Also try keep it as light and sturdy as possible. Any suggestions?

Where to buy carbon fiber in USA?

I buy most of my dry carbon fabric from sollercomposites.com. The website looks like it was made in the 90's, but they have the best prices I've found and good service if you call them.

@SasquatchComposites do you by chance make custom parts for people? I would like to have some custom made dirt bike parts
