4:47 that little bit of Russia is actually due to an agreement after ww2 that Russia needs a European port that doesn't freeze over in winter. It used to be the city of Königsberg, but it was effectively leveled and the entire german population was driven out by the soviets. They have a lot of ports in the Baltic sea that worked wonders during summer months but struggle during the winter. It's too far to reasonably operate exclusively through their pacific ports because it is literally 10 time zones away from the vast majority of their population centers. They have a lot of ports to operate theough the Crimea and the Black sea but it's a little much to have to have all of their sea travel go through the Mediterranean and Turkey would be collecting a fuck ton of money off the canal and it would create heavy conflict of interests since Turkey is a nato country. Kaliningrad is the 4th largest importer of the 85 that exist in Russia. It is a very vitally important piece of land and Russia would probably be willing to lose the entire eastern half of the country before they let their port town go.

The reason rhode island isn't an island is it was rhode island and Providence plantations with the many islands being rhode island and the mainland stuff being providence plantation but somewhat recently our official name was changed dropping providence plantation giving the longest state name to fucking Massachusetts

If a European gets upset that an American can’t name or place many European countries, I’d love to see them name and place the 50 States. Most Americans can find Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Spain, Italy, and Russia. Most Europeans can find California, Texas, New York, and Florida. It’s the same situation, it’s okay both ways. West Virginia is truly one of the great enigmas of US state names. Along with Rhode Island. West Virginia was originally a group of western counties in the state of Virginia that split from the state when the civil war started. Rhode Island was one of the original British colonies which would found America. I believe it got its name because the colony was based on an island but would later aquire territory on the continent. You just cant really see the island on this map. Don't quote me on the Rhode Island thing though. Its just my best guess.

Fun fact, some US states were literally bought for money from other countries. Alaska was bought from Russia for $129 million in today's dollars, or about 2₵ per acre. Sucks for them, since Alaska turned out to be very oil rich, the fourth-most oil rich of any state (Texas is number one, being so rich in resources that if it were its own country, it would be in the top 5 producers of oil, natural gas, wind, and solar, as well as ranking 9th in terms of GDP).
