One thing to know when reading Lord of the Rings: Tolkien originally intended it to be a sequel to his children's book, The Hobbit. So the beginning is very much still "children's book" mode. A few chapters in, it shifts to more adult themes and narrative style that you might enjoy more.

@@intersexcryptid there are a lot of ways to make your own books. I have a larger color printer for covers and a little business printer for interiors. The right card stock is necessary for covers, so go for something lighter than 65 lb paper. Normal copy paper is 20 lbs, so you have a frame of reference. The interior paper I use is 18 lbs, but you don’t have to get that specific weight if you don’t want to. Once the pdf of the interior is printed in a booklet format, I use a heavy duty guillotine paper cutter to cut it down the middle. Then, I sandwich it over, trim the edges off, and hold it together with binder clips. After that, I use a bone folder to make creases on the cover, a putty knife and wood glue on the spine of the interior, tightly wrap the cover around it, clip it together again, scrape off any excess glue, and it dries in maybe ten minutes.

Nice to see Alan Baxter's name mentioned. I have only read 2 of his books so far, but I have enjoyed them both. "The Book Club" was a mystery / light cosmic horror book, and it was pretty interesting. But "the Roo" was an absolute blast. A huge, insanely violent kangaroo murders it's way through a small Australian town. Just a ton of pure fun.

Ok I love fantasy and I am an avid reader but I had a problem getting through Lord of the Rings, I am not saying it is a bad book, it is a great book but it is not a easy read, I do not recommend it as a way to get someone to start reading, it is written to be like a entry in a history book and it can be really meandering. The story is good but even if I am in danger of being tossed out of the fantasy fanclub for saying this Tolkien was a better linguist and historian and general academic than he was fiction author.

I have the same feeling about the fantasy genre! I am personally not into the worldbuilding nor magical creatures and prefer much more a story that has more realistic elements. Not that that theres something wrong with that but its just that I dont vibe with that. I've seen such a high rise for the genre that its crazy, I am happy for those who enjoy it but I wish there was more variety in the popular books nowadays. Thanks for the haul! Waiting for the vlong 😄

When you started reading you skipped the prologue. Don't forget to read the prologue! You don't want to miss the section about weed. And if it feels slow, stick with it until they get to Bree. It really picks up at that point. And if you like horror, Tolkien writes some real black metal-type characters and places that just have an unsurpassed evil vibe, like the the Nazgul, Shelob, Minas Morgul, Cirith Ungol, the Watcher in the Dark, etc. There has been comparisons between Tolkien and Lovecraft.

If you want another book to read with your husband & is horror, considering he likes video games, try Dead Space Catalyst. I haven't read it myself yet (I've got a rather big backlog) but if he's too scared, try God of War 1. I'm currently nearly halfway through that & it's the perfect companion piece to the game as it provides further details & plot not in the game & it holds up well as a stand alone novel. Any video game based novel will do just fine except Metal Gear Solid. That one adapted its source material too literally to the point where it feels like the author is just writing as he sees what happens in game.

I rarely read fantasy. I've always prefered sci-fi. When I was younger I thought that fantasy is silly (with the exception of Tolkien). Then, not that long ago, I was feeling the urge to read a fantasy book (young adult even!) that I thought I would never read because of its silly title - "A Wizard of Earthsea" (which in my language is even sillier). Short, simple book, not much happening (not like the modern stuff, I guess), the author was new to this as well.... Loved it. The whole series. Le Guin was a great writer, wise, yet down-to-earth. But to be fair there's a reason why I'm not bothered by fantasy. I think it's because I love fairytales, myths, history so I start from there.

I'm also a huge horror fan who could never get into fantasy. I feel the exact same way when a knight or dragon or something appears. It's like my eyes just glaze over. There are a few genres I'm not crazy about, but high fantasy especially just cannot seem to click. Even horror fantasy, unless it's modern with a more liberal usage of the world, just doesn't do it for me. Unfortunately, I was forced to read Lord of the Rings for a class, and I HATED it. It's more like a history book, only everything is pretend. I wish I could get into that sort of thing, though, since it's so popular and caters to so many people.

I'd say Lord of the Rings is a bad call for him. Fellowship is a very very slow book. Unless you love world building and lore building it will be a slog. Well yes, I'd agree, it's more than its genre, genre really is just a cloak anyway. It's also great for observing people, group mentality, how Hitler gathered. I think it'd be a better choice for you and hubby than LOTR because you've seen it and I think it's more an accessible read than the complicated lore of LOTR. Like those books are seriously fantasy and I think they are much more densely written. The writing in HP is just much more engaging for a non-reader hence it attracted so many kids who did not read but don't worry they don't feel young especially in those later books they're just really engaging.
