I'm back to see if you can guess which Fox player this is.

Okay so is Fox still popular in Melee? Like I mean of course he's popular, but I feel like a few years ago Fox was THE character to play and now maybe that's not the case. I think Mang0's recent win with Fox may have influenced more people to play Fox but I have no idea.
I hear so much about these "Netplay Falcos" that I was under the impression that Falco was supposed to be the bee's knees. Is that true? Are you all big fans of Falco? I'm fine with Spacies, but they're not as exciting to me as some other characters. (*cough* cough n0ne's Ganondorf)
Maybe it's people outside of the Melee community that think Fox is the best character? It's so hard to say. We're so lost in the weeds of Melee that I think we've forgotten or just don't know how outsiders see Melee.
I think the reason I have these thoughts as well is because I just don't play or think about Fox myself. Does that make me a bad person? I feel like the Fox mains don't come to my channel much haha.

I don't think I've ever seen someone online say that they love fighting Falco. Mind you, I don't see a lot of match ups that people get excited about but I'm sure everyone has their favorite one. Figured that the orange Fox might be a bit of a red herring considering how Crush normally plays default Fox as far as I know!

People are definitely influenced by who's winning at the top. That's why I like to see diversity showcased in Top 8 highlight vids, more people investing time into mid-tiers increases the chance those characters reach their full potential! If you're taking a poll, I've mained Sheik since before Fox was #1, but have recently been spending like 90% of my play time on Luigi.

I always love it when people play Luigi, he's definitely one of my favorite characters in this game. Agreed about the diversity, I like to see diversity even though I know I tend to lean towards showcasing Ganondorf and Falcon eh heh. And yeah top players absolutely influence the player base - I see that happen all the time all sorts of games. I guess that's why you can call them "influencers" sometimes hah. as for most popular characters, id estimate a quarter of players in a room would be falco players, and only the rest of the good characters (fox, falcon, sheik, marth) would be like 10 percent for each character mentioned. And the oddity of good characters, like puff or peach yknow, would be in the less than 5 percent. just my pure estimate dont take it as fax falco is just easier to start with cuz of jump squat, so id imagine thats why people play and end up sticking with him. Especially cuz people get into melee wanting to play spacies (cuz cmon fast apm interactive gameplay).

Too late; I'm taking your word as law! I'd be very curious about player distribution as well. I think I'd be even more curious to see if the people watched my channel matched up with the Melee community as a whole. E.G., would I have a higher percentage of Falcon mains watching my channel? 25% Falco mains sounds right though. I kind of feel like 40% of the Melee population plays spacies, but that's just a guess on my part!

@@Frudgey Oh man Frudgey! That's actually really cool to know. You have so much good Melee to watch! I love that you're getting to discover all of this, and share it with us. I've been watching Melee on KZbin as long as I remember using KZbin. I lived in Wyoming, so I didn't have access to any tournaments, but I followed as much as I could. Crush was one of those people who felt "new" to me when he started exploding in the scene, but quickly grew to be one of my favorites. My friends used to call him American Leffen because he was so good, but he also had that kinda bad boy attitude. There's a great clip of him at a Summit, where he's walking away after the set, and just puts his hand up to the camera, like no pictures please, haha. Always enjoy your channel my man! Hope you're doing good!

Re: the description: Fox is the most popular character competitively, Falco is the most popular character online likely bcuz at lower level laser camping is much stronger. In years past fox was even more popular bcuz of 20xx and also bcuz ppl outside of melee view fox as being significantly better than the rest of the cast due to the way hes portrayed in videos like emplemons hbox doc. I know that in 2017 before i started actually paying attention to melee, i had a sort of general idea that marth and puff were good, but that fox was busted. Which isnt as popular an idea in the actual melee community, even if it persists outside it. Because of this i think a lot of new folks start off playing fox.

Thanks for the answer Leaf Finite, that makes quite a bit of sense to me. I know that once I started making Melee videos, I came to realize that Fox wasn't nearly as dominate as I thought he was. Granted, I think part of that is due to there not being a lot of Fox players right now and Zain being as strong as he is.

Funnily enough, most of the time I hear "Netplay Falcos" as a derogatory term. Many Falco players I find on Slippi have very similar playstyles to the point where you can often have a good idea of what their habits will be before you even start playing. It isn't difficult to beat them when you know what you're doing, but they were something of a wall for me when I first started playing Melee online and against people for the first time. I've owned the game since 2014 or so, but I never had anyone to play it against until recently. Being in Alaska will do that to you. :P And for the sake of your poll I main Dr. Mario. He's the character that just clicks with me the most.

i hate falcos that only laser, even as a character that has good options against it (G&W bucket) i still cant get in and do my good moves, plus i dont have any projectiles besides neutral b which is mainly used for gimping opponents or getting a few extra perfect when you know theyll recover after theyre up b
