Meh. I completely stopped watching WAN show before because it got to a point where it was 70% Linus ranting about whatever personal struggle with some company/purchase/renovation/etc he was currently dealing with, 30% promotion of his merch shop (including more rants about merch R&D), and literally 0% discussion of tech news. Which was a shame because I always enjoyed hearing Linus & Luke's balanced takes on current news topics. If you enjoy every one of Linus' tangents that's good for you, but I'm more in the camp where I've got my own life and don't need to hear every detail of somebody else's (who I don't know personally, and have no reason to care about).

Fujitsu also withheld that there were bugs in the software from the post office at the start and the Post office continued. Fujitsu withheld the information on bugs from witness statements and there is evidence they also tampered with witness statements to remove details of bugs. But the Post Office were as bad if not probably far far worse with their actions. They continually told sub postmasters “you’re the only one with this problem” when clearly there were hundreds. Fujitsu had backend access to the financial accounts and regularly entered systems to change things whilst Fujitsu and Post Office insisted only sub postmasters had access and there was no way anyone could access accounts so they were 100% liable. They also carried out their own private prosecutions and Post Office investigators were paid bonuses for convictions encouraging more cutting corners, withholding evidence etc etc etc. so bad, so wrong on so many levels and as always we know now absolutely no one in power will ever be held accountable or go to prison.

I'm in the UK. I remember hearing about it years ago. The scandal is that it wasn't resolved years ago. It shouldn't take an ITV series to get it resolved (see how quickly it disappears from view when it's not fresh in people's minds). Issue started in late '90s. Story came out in 2009. That's 15 years of nobody following up on it and just letting it stew. Only Private Eye kept covering it. ITV do a mini series. Politicians sweat for a week. I still don't expect anything to happen, regardless of promises, because it's the same bunch of useless idiots in charge as have been in charge for more than a decade overseeing all of this. How many bankers are in jail for the financial crisis? I expect the same number of Post Office bosses to be prosecuted.

When it comes to the question of "do we cut them slack or do we assume malicious intent", you really need to look at past behaviour. If Brian deletes your savegame and says it was an accident - you cut him some slack. If Brian has previously said that he will go out of his way to make your life misserable, you have to assume malicious intent. Like when Google said it will work to force people into not using ad-blockers - if you then later experience significant problems while using an ad-blocker it is entirely reasonable to assume that Google acted maliciously. Or when Ubisoft says they will prevent you from owning anything, you have to assume malicious intent when they delete your games. When someone or something tells you who they are and what they intend to do, LISTEN and take heed.

Steam has their hooks into me pretty good, and I am mostly okay with that. I did notice lately however that you can buy a game on steam and it will STILL require running Origin or Uplay or some other publisher malware, and that really pisses me off. It was bad enough being forced to get an account through those services and sign in inside the game, but a wholeass separate program that MUST run and has been proven to be spyware in the past is unacceptable.

@@jarielrotta135the thing is that it's not steams fault... steam is essentially just a market front with hosting services, essentially like a digital gamestop, so whatever happens once you install and hit the play button in steam is dictated by the developer, plenty of games on steam didn't use to require 3rd party launcher but plenty of devs have started switching over which isn't something steam has control over and likely not something they're likely to care about since they are the highest grossing company per capita with around only 1200 employees which is enormously impressive for such a large company.

But they're not talking about game purchases. They're talking about more people moving to subscription services (like gamepass). It's the same as 90s blockbuster saying "for the rental model to work, people need to be comfortable giving the films back when they're done." It's hardly a controversial statement, it's just being co-opted by the internet to fight back against the recent influx of digital only releases. It was still a stupid thing to say though.

Used to be you had to have an account (which was hidden until after purchase or I probably wouldn't have done that either), but now it seems to have changed to must also use the malware runtime, even when already running through steam. f that.

@12:00 Ive started going back to physical disks for my movies because over the last couple years EA has removed games from my library (with zero notice) that I purchased and when I spoke to their support they in no uncertain terms told me to kick rocks and that I had no recourse available to me. In that moment I realized that the convenience of digital downloads for media is largely not worth it. I knew there was always a chance it could happen but I never thought it would because it seemed like such a stupid thing for platforms to do. WIth games I dont mind as much because I seldom buy things day one or full price, but with movies I have a strong attachment to them and really find the idea that my movies will potentially start vanishing very worrisome. So yeah, im all about the disc life again.

100% there's the whole risk of things being yanked but also the quality difference is not insignificant. For classics and movies that I know I'll want to watch more than once OR that are visually impressive, I buy them in hard copy (4k bluray or highest available) and play them on an upper mid-range player which also actually makes a difference when you've got a good enough TV. I've done A-B testing against various streaming services. The quality is not close. Streaming looks dull, colors are off and don't pop the way they do on bluray, there are artifacts and other obvious signs of compression, if your internet isn't lightning fast it'll sometimes intermittently downgrade to like 240p (especially frequent on Hulu for some reason) which is very jarring when trying to enjoy high res content. The list goes on.

If you really mean that, do it now. Physical media is going by the wayside, and the only thing that slow that down is if people start making it worthwhile to continue selling discs. We're really on the precipice here. A few retailers have already stopped, which means inventory is going to go down. If that happens, disc manufacturers start shutting down plants, optical drive vendors stop manufacturing transports and optics, and then it's too late. So make sure you put your money where your mouth is. I just bought a BD movie last night.

The point would be that the new video should replace the old one and be a single point of resource that is sufficient to a new builder. If they spread out the information over multiple videos with updated chapters, it will make it much more noob-unfriendly. They could make it a playlist and update each video individually, but it's not as obvious for someone looking up PC building guide videos.

Some of these expensive purchases in the government are also a way for a department to keep and maintain their budget. When I was in a deployable unit they always bought Oakleys and Surefire flashlights, along with other high priced items, because if they didn't spend all the assigned budget then the unit would get a lower budget next year. Definitely a lot of things that need to be changed to minimize a ballooning budget in government.

I suspect, to meet the specified requirements of the trash cans , written in to the contract by the government, once they were no longer commercially available, Boeing had to hand make them or create tooling to make them individually which is a huge cost to add when only a small amount of items are made.

I kind of wondered if this was the case. It's either super expensive to manufacture them as one-offs, or they're charging excessive prices to "encourage" the move to newer platforms (and because they can), or the order was for a ... "trash can" wink wink nudge nudge.

You guys seem surprised at how much a trash can for a Boeing 707 costs the US military, but this is a story as old as dirt. 1:47:00 "I wonder why this took so long" Computer Weekly first reported on problems back in 2009 I think? Most convictions happened after that. The post office was fully aware of the bugs in the software, at the time of the original launch. Nobody in law, politics or media picked up on the issue in convictions for years. The post office actually lobbied for changes in the law so that the system could not be questioned during trial, and this change was accepted (so that computer systems are deemed to be reliable unless the victim has explicit proof otherwise). The politicians didn't want to address the issue because it was them who agreed that law, and the post office is owned by the government, so they didn't want to pay out compensation. It's only when ITV (not the BBC) dramatised it on TV that the politicians couldn't avoid it any more. Even now, the compensation system is designed to make it hard to claim any compensation (for example, insisting that the victims supply the transaction information that only the Horizon system knows).

Fujitsu case is an example of what happens when tech support works with assumption that users are always stupid and don't know a thing, and always lie. While this is often true, it's not always true, and you need to find ways to validate that claims and see if maybe there is a bug, especially if you are getting same claim from multiple sources.

Royal Mail and Post Office are different companies, because UK privatises companies in utterly inefficient and stupid ways. Post Office is still under public ownership, Royal Mail was privatised, but due to commitments to deliver to Stornoway at same price as Birmingham is never going to be able to compete with other companies that take their lucrative business and post the rest (see UKmail etc.) Shower of useless articles in charge.

@@grahamleiper1538 Sorry, my bad, yes it's the Post Office I meant at the end. It looks like at the time of the tender and contract being award to ICL, Fujitsu owned 80% of the company. By the time the system was rolled out on a wide scale, Futitsu was the sole shareholder. Utterly atrocious that it seems that early small scale roll-outs seem to have been showing the same 'bug' back since 1995. The tender and contract was meant to not just be for Post Office, but also Benefits Authority at the same time. Can only imagine what could have been there, but they dropped it.

The "point of CUDA" is *not* "performance". It's programmable computer functionality, specifically *proprietary* functionality. AMD's HIP is in fact a reimplantation of cuda because they've made half a dozen open standards and Nvidia has used market controls to crush them. All of this is why a cuda translator for other architectures would be great and has already been done in limited ways in the past (HIP isn't the first). Unfortunately this has been a problem for 20 years now, it's not ending soon.

Music is fundamentally different than games for me. Music is 3 min give or take and I enjoy finding new stuff easily. Or shuffling similar Music to a specific song or artist. Music is more passive for me. Music is easier to pirate if spotify decides to get rid of songs or artists I like. Games I do not want that. I like word of mouth, or keep up with releases I'm interested in. Games I can play anywhere from 2 hours to over 400 on a single game. Gaming subscription requires I have sit down and pay attention for hours to make it worth it, sometimes I just don't have time. Plus I don't want more "exclusive" style wars like Xbox v Playstation v pc. Movies are easy to pirate as well, I don't pay for multiple streaming sites and will pirate stuff that's exclusive or use free trials anyway. Netflix has been making bad decisions so I'm no longer using that anyway and they removed a ton of stuff I liked so I just watch movies online now. Swen take is on point as well! I already hate live service games that require online connections to play. So I don't want to even more be under their thumb. So ubisoft guy can go eat a "another name for rooster".

A lot of old music gets remastered and the original version is often no longer available on the streaming service (that goes for Spotify at least, not 100% sure about other streaming services). I suspect it has to do with keeping the songs under copyright, but I often feel that the remastered version is much worse than the original I grew up with.

Music CDs still work today, if you have a CD/DVD player for your PC You can get an external USB version if you have a laptop, and then rip it to your PC with a lot higher quality than the streaming services like Spotify and even Tidal. Capitalism is only "democratic" when it has no other choice. The only motive is profit, competition is supposed to keep companies offering choice but in reality most industries if they think they can get away with it will tacitly agree between themselves to limit choice and instead compete on terrain they would prefer I.e. marketing, brand loyalty/tribalism. Then eventually someone wins and has zero motivation to concede anything to its customers.

Just wanted to leave a few notes while I still remember them, and realize this will probably never get read, but here goes... I recently built a new PC, for the first time since my i5-2500k system, and ran into a few hiccups using your video. I think at least two are general enough that they might be helpful in your revisit: 1) It wasn't clear to me which side to mount the fans on a dual tower cooler (turns out, push air through fins, DRAM to middle, then middle to back), and how to actually use the clips to mount the fans. 2) Don't take the sticker off the m.2 NVMe (thanks Provoked Prawn) Regarding password managers you discussed in a previous WAN show, I wanted to mention that you can keep your TOTP codes in a separate database from your passwords. I think this may be what was causing so much confusion, and maybe Luke crossed wires with another topic. Doing this, your 2FA isn't broken if your password DB is compromised. I find it's a lot easier to manage sync across devices, auto-entry, etc. using something like KeePassXC than on-phone Authy, Authenticator, etc. and having that streamlined will make you more likely to actually use it. I suppose it's more nuanced if you consider hosted options like LastPass, where there's the fear of an all-out breach pwning both DBs? But even though I don't use them, I hope they are taking the proper steps that this shouldn't be possible.

2:55:01 Linus. This is an interesting point. it may be a business, but do you not get excited when businesses you’ve invested in whether it be time or money, do well? To me it’s the same thing. While I did not put any money into the team, I have spent plenty of time watching it, and I feel a great amount of joy watching the team or business as you call it, succeed. It also makes me happy to know that the players get paid to play the sports that I love playing.

I just wanted to say I came here simply to comment this. I listen to your show on Apple Podcasts and the second I heard about the Steve hoodie I bought it using Apple Pay! XD Not a huge Jobs fan, but it seems like an incredible addition to my goofy sweater collection that I'm working on for when I become a Computer Science teacher. Got some Windows XP sweatshirts too. Super excited as this is the first piece of merch I've purchased from you guys and I hear great things.

My most played games recently have been borderlands 1 and halo MCC. I’m so glad 343 has put all the effort into the old halo’s, but most of my playing is still old games.

I only get Music CDs for Artists that I like, as the money goes directly to them, they get the most revenue for CD sales. As for Blu Rays or DVDs, I still buy them but usually only for ripping them once, and anything except 4k is fairly easy to rip on modern PCs

Linus, you could buy something like the qudelix 5k (one of the best of this type of product) to regain the headphone jack with optional bluetooth functionality (with Ldac and nearly all other codecs)

If SSDs are going to get more expensive, and I already have a SATA SSD, do you think I should get an NVME drive now? Are more games going to come out that benefit from it? I already beat Ratchet & Clank and it ran fine, and I'm not planning to play Alan Wake 2.

That monitor with gif behind Linus needs to feature more! Also the right set would be good for after dark. Although that means you'd need to move which isn't probably convenient.

The best "home media" I've ever watched is James Bond's No Time to Die in 4K Blu Ray. It's better than previous titles because it's a 100GB disc, and the scenery is absolutely amazing. If I had a large TV, I wouldn't honestly know the difference between it and watching the movie in a Theatre, as the visual quality looks very similar.

even cds have better sound quality than MP3s - but as an avid music listener I notice the difference in sound quality from LP, Tape, CD and MP3 and different speakers and stereo components so some of us still find the CD collection and record collection to be more enjoyable to listen to --- now all that being said I do have a linux machine and a huge MP3 collection - I use Mixxx to get a close to original sound quality out of MP3s and I imagine as time goes on the quality of digital sound will just get better.
