I'm Concerned About Nightingale

In this video I discuss why I don't think Nightingale is ready for release later this month after playing the recent stress test. Nightingale is a survival game set in a steam punk world where you travel to new realms via a card crafting system.

-Not a strong PC here, I7, 16GB ram, Radeon 5700, no problem with FPS after some minor setting changes. -Crafting time: crafting table addons make them faster. I think addons power up multiple tables at once if you place them right. May be wrong tho. -Blocking and dodging: I could do either one or the other, depending on weather I used a two - or a one handed weapon. Required different tactics. -Game is not ready: Yes, I agree. It has a long way to go. I enjoyed it tremendously tho.

Appreciate the video and you make good points but it's not full-on releasing this month, it is releasing into early access. Very very different than a full release. It will likely stay in early access for 1-3 (or more) years. Early access is essentially a playable alpha/beta.

"Early Access" means nothing. Sometimes it's nothing more than a marketing strategy. Other times it's a tiny project where the developers simply need to release it in the hopes that it's able to fund it's development. Either way though, all games only get one launch, EA or no, this is the launch that will define the game, the one that people will remember.

An EA launch is just as important as a full release, if they fail to leave a good impression during EA launch people will remember that and the sour taste left in it's wake will never truly go away. also releasing this game 4 weeks after both palworld and enshrouded, might not of been the best idea. obviously no one knew just how popular those games were going to become but why risk it? Delay for another 3-6 months and focus on QoL and early game polishing.@@LiveAndLaughs

That's just a misnomer created by the industry. The actual reality is they are a barometer for what players are will to accept. If enough people play they won't change anything and it will stay in early access for ever. If not they will change just the easiest things people whine about and then release it

Games in Beta don't really change much from actual release, as all the main mechanics, art, graphics etc... are added on the alpha stage. So people who expect big changes from early access to release day are simply ignorant of what a Beta is. Yea, game will get polished and game impacting mechanics may be added on the early stages of a Beta, but most of the time there will be little change.

Thanks for your honest review. I got excited as i saw their high quality trailers, but as i saw the first gameplay i was disappointed. It’s like two different games lol. One thing i directly noticed was missing door animations, feels like unfinished to me and sadly i do not have much hope in games which release into EA like that. The game should be in a playable and enjoyable state. Early Access can be used to polish some things which they can’t identify without players. Missing animations are just lazy imo.

In my test i had flat 144 fps freesync with all maxed out using FSR 3 frame generation (no lag) - I don't think performance is going to be an issue with this game. My rig is mid tier CPU AMD 5600X, GPU Radeon 6950 XT, 32 GB Ram on 1440p screen 144 hz.

Playing enshrouded now. From what gameplay footage I have seen from NG, NG does not look in any way worse than Enshrouded. In fact the latter looks quite toy-ish at times with rather generic environments. It's also not an MMO so the number of players at launch should not matter at all if you're playing solo. It will have more than a year in the oven, because the oven is called early access.

It was just a stress test. The tutorial will be available in EA with a walk through. It is very grindy and you have to work for it. It’s not easy, but the results and possibilities are beautiful. EA also has a third person mode. I think this one is going to be a surprise hit for most people. Yes, it’s going to have a lot of issues and things people want to change, but that’s why it’s EA

After playing the stress test I thought the combat was the worst part of the game for sure. The balance of the weapons was the complete opposite of what I thought it would be. I felt like my axe was infinitely more powerful than the guns I was furnished with. I didn't get into the enchantments and spells to "enhance" combat so I will hope that those make it more interesting. Left click combat is just major yawn for me. Having specific defensive moves tied to weapons I think is a huge mistake as well. Having a dodge with all weapons would at least make the combat a bit more interesting. I too hope there will be sliders. Some of the time sync felt unbalanced. I left the stress test extremely unimpressed, with the exception of the building system.

Aren't people tired of repeating this meme yet? It doesn't really matter what it's called, it's launching. If it's bad, that's what it will be remembered as. "EA" means basically nothing these days. In some cases you have AAA studios releasing an entirely finished game as "EA" a week early, and charging people for the privilege. In other cases the studio realizes it's a failed project and dumps what they have as "EA" hoping to recoup some of their investment. In yet other cases the studio runs out of money and honestly want's to continue working on it, but the only path forward is hoping it can self fund. In other cases it literally means nothing, but the marketing team thinks using the EA title will sell more copies. However, there's is one thing that EA is not: A catchall excuse for releasing an unfinished product. So please stop repeating this stupid meme. The game will be remembered and defined for what it is at launch. There will be no other moment where there is more interest and hype. If they launch it in an Alpha state, then they are either desperate, or utter fools.

It contained only the first act, the full content wasn't trickled out over the course of the ea/beta. This meant that the actual release was a full release, one that nobody had experienced or gotten bored of.

If you are saying you finished enshrouded in 18 hours, you most definitely just rushed the crafter quests and did nothing else. You get most of the quests from the world by exploring. You say you prefer mega grindy games but didnt even grind in enshrouded... Actions speak louder than words.

Good thing this is a EA release and the dev team is amazing. After play testing this game for past 1.5 years ( since the very first test) Devs have done nothing but listen to feedback and change to game for the better. I wouldn't expect anything less over the EA period. Super excited to finally play this with my friends. I have very high hopes and still do for this game!

What you describe about the enemy is literally how it is in Enshrouded though. I wonder why so many people seem so biased about Enshrouded for some reason when it's not that great of a game, with very few content, no enemy variety, and one of the worst AI I've seen. Also, from the videos of Nightingale, the graphics look noticeably better than those of Enshrouded and with a lot more content so does that mean they lied in the video trailers?

E shrouded looks way less polished than this game does imho. Sure the size is massiv, its also voxel-based and therefore still pretty, but not better than Nightingale. They really nailed the gaslamp setting.

Enshrouded is /not/ massive. We played it for a bit, cleared the entire map, and it's only the bottom half of the map that's accessible, and the entire left third of the map is inaccessible mountain terrain. The northern portion of the map is as of yet empty space. Enshrouded has low enemy variety, the quests consist /entirely/ of killing a mob, collecting an item or reading a letter or a note. It's a /very/ simple game once you get into it and while I feel like it has potential, there's just not enough there to keep playing beyond reaching level 25 and then immediately logging out for the last time.

@@dox1048 It felt tiny to me because there was nothing to do. There's far too little enemy variety. The shroud plays this creepy music, but then there's nothing scary about being in it. I just want these developers to be more creative. Do something unique. Because for the longest time now, not a single game aside from maybe Control (Ashtray Maze) actually surprised me. Enshrouded has more potential than most, but it's still just another lackluster, low effort survival game.

what is really strange is that if it isn't ready for release why would it release in a time just after two of the biggest survival crafting games in a while (palworld and enshrouded) i personally wouldn't want to be in direct competition with those two even if nightingale is highly anticipated

Both Palworld and Enshrouded are also early access games so it really doesn’t make any difference. I can’t speak for palworld but I’ve put over 100 hours into enshrouded and have already got to the current level cap and basically done all there is to do in the games current state (you can’t even access over half of the map yet because it’s in early access). TBH I’m ready to play another game until enshrouded releases more content as well as fixes some bugs, it definitely needs some work as well, but they’re working on it so it’s only a matter of time.

a. The Realm system is the core system in the game, i mean that's the game. And i feel it is refreshing. If you have issues with that, then this isn't the game for you. b. From what I've seen in videos, the menu seems like a typical survival crafting game, and i play alot of them. c. Crafting i assume is enhanced/augmented based on placement and other factors (typical in many games) in palworld they use pals as the agumenter. d. Sliders will likely not be there since it's hosted server-side. e. I'll check it out in 20 minutes i guess, but i don't think i'll have an issue with crafting so long as you don't need to stand next to it and look at it while it crafts. f. so few games have good AI, Enshrouded does not have great enemy-AI. Stand on a fence and spam with the wand and the enemy won't touch you or just attack the wall, also easy to dodge all enemies.They also get stuck . g. If you play Apex Legends and then go to Enshrouded, Enshrouded will feel sluggish. h. Yes, they have confirmed that they moved it up to be able to respond better if there are issue on release. Which i find is a good idea. i. It's still going to be better than the day before.

It's early access. I feel people use the term in a way that it isn't meant. This isn't like pre order early access... this is, game is not finished, it isn't complete kind of early access. You're paying to play an alpha or early beta build of something that is likely to change quite a bit. Of course it isn't ready for mainstream gamers, but its fun as it is atm!

The game is NOT intuitive - AT ALL - and that was my biggest issue when I played one of the Alphas. It was deeply disappointing to me. I will not be purchasing - until they do an awful lot to fix/change things to make them better. I have been extremely shocked that they are dropping the game - and then they changed the date to earlier. I had been really looking forward to Nightingale - but i'm not anymore. That is not to say that if/when they fix things to make them better - perhaps I will. I want to thank you for giving an HONEST review. Every other youtube i've watched on this game in the last week - have NOT been honest and only talked about how great it was. The game needs a ton of work to be any good.

Luckily it's only going into early access then. From what I've seen people who purchase into early access are usually understanding of what they're getting into and don't view it as a finished product, but instead help support the game, by giving feedback to help improve it during the remaining development process.

I'm the opposite.. Enshrouded runs smooth and its building is amazing. The combat is a little rough but, it'll more than likely smooth out during the EA phase. Nightingale on the other hands, feels real rough, and the UI is awful. Combat is rough, and the current state doesn't look like a proper build to be released. It still needs work, maybe another year or so before EA.

Buddy i think enshrouded has broken your brain a little bit here. The movement speed in Nightingale is completely normal for a first-person game and its combat is also not as you are perceiving it. Its very similar to Oblivion/Skyrim combat where there is weight and commitment behind making attacks, not sluggish and lackluster like your post-enshrouded mindrot is claiming. Enshrouded is like a survivial game on x2 speed, and if your opinon is painted this hard by recent games you play you should take a break before you review another game.

Dude, it is an early access title. Also, there is no reason to compare Nightingale to enshrouded...They have completely different styles. If anything, Enshrouded looks more dated than Nightingale. Also, the devs explain in a video their inspiration for the game and why there are Realm portals. It is inspired by a book called Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell...which the devs say and I quote "The idea of piercing the veil between worlds, combined with the Victorian era, led to the creation of Nightingale’s setting. Long ago, humanity met the Fae, forming a relationship that lasted millennia." I makes total sense to me, besides that, it is something different, another layer in the game that feels different than most other open world survival game with "ONE" huge map.

I also played the latest stress test. I actually closed the game an hour earlier than the end of test. I know your getting mobbed by some folks atm but your right, after playing the beta I went from super excited to cautious optimism. And I 100% agree that the devs want to release it earlier so that they can spread out some of the negative feedback they will receive (although that is a decision i agree with even as a dev myself, its better to not do a huge release like this just as weekend is about to start). I had an RTX 3070, and the game did not run above 30FPS with multiple configs i tried, even when changing resolution so there is def something going on within the config that is causing this performance issue atm. I have heard both sides on this with some saying it ran perfectly fine and others with very decent hardware like myself finding it hard to run. I also agree with the point about Enemy AI. At one point i just jumped a little further up and those gremlin looking guys couldn't find a way to me so they'd just roam around me acting all confused. It was lame. However I will mention my fight with the automata knight was a big highlight and it felt like a real challenge. It had a good moveset and you could read its moves well. So im hoping boss fights will be different than trash mobs. UI was pretty bad esp the whole 12345 67890 thing they had going on. But honestly it wasnt a big deal because its EA plus we were dropped like 10 hours into the game so I assume new players will have a bit more handholding to them. Slowness wasn't a big deal to me personally either, I think for players who are soo used to ark levels of speed and holding shift constantly it can feel slow but it was whatever. There were spawn issues, im not sure if it was because of my difficult or what, but man those wolves and hogs just felt like a waste of time to deal with and i realized the best thing to do is simply keep walking and put a healing spell on myself as they attack me. It did not feel worth it to engage with soo many of them at all. Overall I think the design team is blowing it out of the park, I still have good hopes for the game but I think we are about to see a mediocre launch. The bar for survival games atm is fairly high given what we just saw in Jan so they really need to impress to win eyeballs over.

Not to take any devs side, but you're looking at a game that's not even out in early access and you mention things that will probably be part of balancing, like 'extra grindy'. All of these things will hopefully be balanced out through early access. That is generally my experience with these type of games. I'm not concerned one bit. I would be concerned if the devs were not at all receptive to player input and as far as I can tell, they seems to be. I honestly wish people would save these 'I'm con-cerned' stuff until you're months from full release and these basic things aren't even addressed. 2 more years in development? I rather they cook this bun fully during early access than release something like starfield. And dated looks? It's the art style.

so what about .. early access d0 you not understand ? it's going to be a playable beta that will undergo patches upon patches and hotfixes until it becomes smooth. that's probably going to take a year or three . lets hope they realize all that and are hoping the EA will get them the data and feedback they need.. even your feedback from this review. but you keep saying its not ready for release... of course its not.. its an EARLY ACCESS release. appreciate you making the time to post your thoughts. but i think you confuse what early access and launch mean.

I also played in the Alpha closed testing and I had similar thoughts. It wasn't what was advertised, played poorly, and I came out of that test thinking that I would be skipping this game

Very well done… Nice critique… Not intentionally being hard or easy on the game. It does sound like they want to hurry up and release the game so that the masses of people can try and help guide the game with suggestions to where it should be. Maybe not really listening to all the feedback during the play test. I’m like you very hopeful for the game but it’s a super difficult time for them to release right after and Enshrouded

I agree with you, but I think your viewers would have received your points better if you showed the actual footage, which looks nothing like the trailer. The trailer looks fantastic, but that's not the game we're getting.

No way youre ragging on the ai in this game? its leagues above enshrouded's ai killing themselves or staring at you while you kill them. Idk about stress test day since i didnt play but all the betas were fine. not to mention this is early access, not launch

They were Bioware, with lead dev having worked on Neverwinter, Dragon Age, etc. Still, those games were more tactical and Mass Effect was pretty 'eh' shooter on the shooter. So their combat being subpar shows. Its also seems to be riddled with DEI checklist and, on principle, I refuse the Nu-racism brought to the current year.
