My Ford Windstar needed a new transmission with only 50K miles on it. Turns out Ford put the van body on the chassis of the much smaller Taurus. I didn’t even have it fully paid off before I need to spend thousands on a new transmission. Now I only buy Japanese cars. My Nissan Xterra is closing in on 200K miles and runs great!

I have had Transits as works vans (working form home) and when I was self employed over a 20 year period: Not once did any of them break down. Then along came all the ECU's etc..... Never been the same since. Friend of mine had a small fleet of the later models: Nothing but problems....especially that Renault (I believe) engine: Nightmares.

Hi, after just watching your latest video I would like to say you have just experienced a common problem and not to waste any money trying to possibly fix a fault that doesn't exist. You should never rely on your vehicles reading of miles remaining on the fuel left in your van especially when you get near the 50 miles or less. Its worked out on the previous mpg estimating what's left from what you have used and can sometimes read more than it should. This then causes you to cut out as you did especially going up steep hills as the remaining fuel runs to the back of the fuel tank and the pick up pipe that pump sucks fuel up is at the front so it starves the engine of fuel and your engine cuts out. If you had rolled to the bottom of the hill it may have started then done the same as you drove back up the hill. By putting in the fuel the AA patrol but in it will have made it enough for the pick up pipe to start sucking fuel through again. If you always fill up as you get down to a quarter of a tank or when it say something like 70 miles remaining it should stop it happening to you in the future. Hope this helps I knows its a long comment. Please keep up the videos and the camping it really helps and makes a difference, don't let the van get you down we all get issues and sometimes expensive ones. Thanks Brian.

Not your fault Shawn, and I'm a bit suspicious my default,as to the fuel pump etc. I wonder if there's dirt in the tank so as it gets low causes problems? You keep so calm considering how many issues you've had. Do you trust the garage you use? Maybe look into new fuel gauge, can the fuel tank be flushed?
@patagualianmostly7437
@patagualianmostly7437 23 күн бұрын
Most diesels today use a Common rail design.....which means the fuel is constantly being cycled back to the tank. The pump pickup is as low in the tank as possible. In theory, there should be no "dirt in the tank: The pump has a suction screen....it then goes through the main filter...through the engine and all excess fuel returned to the tank. (Some, I understand, use a floating pick-up.....which could cause what you say regarding low level....pick up foreign bodies in the bottom of the tank: But I've yet to see one that uses that system.)(Petrol or diesel)

Next time you build a camper van my mate you need to keep in mind before anything else, what if you need to swap everything from one van to another pretty sharpish? Me personally I’d build everything attached to detachable backing boards like sinks cupboards beds….ect and then the only thing that would be solid fixed so to speak would be the framework, you make a drawing of your framework with their finishing measurements on them and as long as they end up with those measurements you can build the framework however you want and then just start detaching from one van and moving across to the other straight into place 👍🏼

I had a similar thing when I was a teenage driver I would run about with very little in the tank and keep running out due to an inaccurate fuel guage, I soon realised that the quarter mark was empty so never let it get close. Nowadays i fill them right up and never go below quarter of a tank by habit plus this stops the pump sucking any crud from the bottom of the tank.

Oh, for what’s it’s worth. I’ve had similar breakdown years ago. Turned out to be the plastic pick up pipe in the tank. It had started splitting at the end. So when low on fuel it would start drawing air instead of fuel, and thus stop even with 100 miles remaining. New bit of plastic tank pick up pipe and I was sorted. Hopefully it’s that simple for you.

Does you diesel heater feed from the same point as the vehicle .Some vans have two feed pipes into tank, the heater one being shorter so the van does not run out of fuel. If these where the wrong way round, when fuel gets low the engine would not draw fuel , but gauge would say it was not empty.

I get the car out the crashed car. A lorry hits my van it flies forward and hits me. I ended up between the wrecked car and the Luton van.... You shouldn't feel embarrassed, it sounds like the replacement fuel pump introduced an issue with the fuel gauge not reporting the correct level ... I regularly run cars after the low fuel light has come on - that's why it exists ... if you were meant to fill up when the gauge shows quarter of a tank, why would the vehicle have a low fuel light? I've done the same with hire vans (most vans I hire come from 'better value' rental companies who supply vehicles with the fuel they are returned with, so you don't always get a choice!

@LoveSundays great video again, I have a 2015 short wheelbase transit and I find that the fuel gauge can be optimistic, when it drops to 1/4 of a tank in reality its only 1/8 full so I tend to fill up at just belou half a tank. Did they take the fuel tank off when the garage replaced the fuel pump? If they did then they should have checked the sender that tells the fuel gage how much fuel the tank had in it. Also if you were low on fuel when the engine cut (i know that hill out of Falmouth well) then if the tank was very low then the pump could be struggling to pick up fuel as you were on an incline. Hopefully you wont sell that van as it looks awesome.

The saddest part of that video wasn’t breaking down or the embarrassment of running out of fuel. It was the “Cheers” at the end, you sounded totally dejected. You’ll find a solution to keep on going - you love this too much.

Just a heads up mate never run your fuel tank below half cause your fuel pump and filter will get blocked up with crap from the bottom of your fuel tank I never let my cats run below a quarter tank if your fuel game is wrong it’s going be hard to keep it topped up mage

When I go up a steep hill with my Ford transit the fuel and mileage goes down quickly, turn around and go down the hill my needle goes backwards! And I still have fuel albeit slightly less in the tank..your tank is just reading at a slant if ya know what I mean.

Even though my new Motorhome (VW Crafter base) is new I ALWAYS top up when I get to half a tank. Initially filling it up to the top is expensive but after that I'm only ever half filling it. Having run out of fuel in an awkward place in my car I never want to go through that again.

We had this same thing happen in a first year US transit. For no reason at all it just won’t start. Then it will and it’s fine for a while. The shops can’t figure it out either.

Shouldn’t the garage have checked that when they replaced the fuel pump. Glad it wasn’t more expense though.

I'd agree with most of the comments already posted. Never go below 1/4 of a tank, ever. I've seen transits go from 100 to zero in a matter of miles, and that was at the end of a long journey. Find a new, decent garage as there are some around that are simply not capable of fault finding, possibly through lack of experience, but I think you've been 'had' at various times with this van. Saying that, Ford garages aren't much better. At least my local one isn't. Not sure i've seen this mentioned (as it's not related to this issue but just a heads up), have a look on the menu on the dashboard to see how many trips you've done with a cold engine. Two up from the miles remaining, then across to the right, then up or down. In the manual it states to drive them for at least 20 mins at high revs once a month (I stay in fourth every time I get on the motorway for 20 mins, as I don't drive mine often.). This should then clear the message (assuming there is one and I have a feeling there is). Driving round the back lanes of Cornwall, as lovely as it is, is just no good for a modern diesel engine if that's all you do. Doesn't matter on the manufacturer either. Hope this helps 👍

We've got an IVECO 7.5 Ton Horsebox. We've run out of diesel before, and it was showing a quarter tank still. Took ages to get it to start. I had to take off two diesel filters, fill them with diesel and keep cranking the engine. I will never buy another diesel vehicle for as long as i've got a hole in my rear end.

We bought a Chausson motorhome on a ford chassis and it was nothing but trouble. The fuel injectors were faulty and during the repair, the mechanic dropped something into the engine which resulted in catastrophic damage and we had to have a new engine fitted!! We did get our outlay reimbursed by the garage eventually but we were so traumatised by the whole process we sold the van at a loss :-(

I never run any car or van less than 1/4 tank just so don’t pick up crap at bottom of fuel tank. Looking at your gauge that wasn’t quarter of a tank you had it was nearly in the red. I fill up at just under half a tank in my California, another reason is diesel heater will stop at 1/4 tank. Never run near low! Love the vids by the way 👍🏼

yup, self inflicted breakdown, never run a diesel lower than 100 mile range left, it clogs filters + sucks air in. also, condensation [ie water] builds up in empty tanks, keep it full, - no water

The new fuel pump pickup might not reach as deep into the fuel tank. Also you broke down going up a steep hill with the gauge on red. Don't run it so low in the future, it's not worth the inconvenience, plus all the rubbish settles at the bottom of the tank so that's probably what killed the last pump of you run about on fumes.

Could it be water in the fuel tank? My father in law used to have a service station and he said they used to have bad fuel deliveries that had a lot of water in it. I’ve also had to drain my fuel filter a few times on my car to get rid of the water that was in the fuel.

The same thing happen to me many years ago in a Merc Sprinter heading to Leeds, Gauge showed just below a 1/4 of a tank and I was just thinking I will need to fill up before the return journey and then the engine just cut out and would not restart. I sat on the hardshould of the M1 waiting for help. When the guy from Mercedes recovery arrived he did the same thing and fueled the tank and it started. He told me there was a sensor that cut the engine before it ran out of fuel! what at 1/4 of a tank?

If you know roughly your milage to the tank, say 600 miles, click the odometer and keep an eye on it, when it gets around 500 miles fill up. A temporary solution. To get a decent price for your van with it being so well known you really need it spot on mechanically. Then the should I sell or keep it question pops back up 😬 I personally would try and find an independent ford specialist. 👍
