Hey mate. Just mentioning landing maize on a soil that has a lot of competition will produce short maize. As it has alot of competition. Tell ya what come see dozer the farmer and see how we do it. Based on a peat farm with full tillage as it will have little to no competition with full spraying.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Won’t have competition as the grass will die but I get what you mean, they trialed some last year and couldn’t see a difference compared to the strip tilled stuff so hopefully it goes alright. Cultivations all good if it’s flat, but I’m looking at other ways around it as I hate seeing top soil run off. Where abouts are you?
@Dozerthefarmer2 жыл бұрын
@@TheOnceADayFarmer hey mate. Saw your face on the cordon maize ad too. That’s mint. It’s great to see different plots and how they go. I have a rugby mate who does all different trail plots with different varieties too. Always great to see how his maize goes at the field day. That’s true thats true. We are very flat on the Hauraki Plains. So very little run off. We roll our maize after it’s been planted with a Cambridge roller. It’s meant to help. Hauraki Plains.

Quite a few planters around here are like that too, I’ll have to find out why he doesn’t do that, but I’m guessing it’s so he can have options around planting 🤷

The 107crm doesn’t mean it’s ready in 107 days, it’s a comparative tool and is an accumulative heat days figure (or there abouts), I reckon it will be 130 or so days before you chop it (mid-late march)
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Ah that makes sense then thanks 🙏 I reckon it’ll be ready late Feb early March, but really depends on the weather 😅

This strip experiment will be very interesting. The bully surrendered to the challenge of the tractor. lol It appears you might kave had so erosion over the water pipe. Is your seed grown in New Zealand? Also will be interesting where you changed your seed population with ear and stalk size. Thanks for showing things many never see Andrew.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Yeah hopefully it works out all right 🤞 I think it’s only going to get better and better over time. I’m pretty sure all the maize seed is grown here, mainly over gisborne way on the east coast. I didn’t change it I just planted the whole lot at 90,000 👍
@shaynelammas94132 жыл бұрын
Really interesting Andrew your Video. I like this. That you are trying different methods too grow the Maize. And the drill they are using looks really expensive if you were too buy it tho . So it’s cheaper to use Contracters to do the Work Andrew???
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Yep way cheaper to use the contractor than buy all our own gear that we would get very little use out of, plus they can afford the newest flashiest gear which do an awesome job. Always got to try and improve things 👌
@davidporter41622 жыл бұрын
It'll be interesting to see if there's a difference in the weed growth between strip till and DD since the strip till was sprayed before you disturbed the ground again whereas the DD will be sprayed after drilling. Most interesting will be forage and grain yield though!
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Yep I totally agree, I think over time it’s only going to get better and better. I’d like to think in the near future I’ll be able to DD the whole lot with little yield loss but time will tell 🤷

G’day Cuz, what are you doing in terms of nitrogen? I note you’re not drilling into clover paddocks so was curious about your fertiliser regime.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 жыл бұрын
Just the same as normal, so put a base fert on and then DAP gets drilled with the maize seed down the spout. We also irrigate the maize ground with effluent which helps.
