Howdy Andrew I have both type of feeders, I have a giltrap 3 point linkage round bale feeder, extremely good on round bales The hustler same as yours with extensions for big squares. The hustler is not a patch on the giltrap for rounds As we make silage and buy hay we have ended up with both I thought I would only use the hustler for both and sell the giltrap, thank goodness I didn’t (other wise my wife would have sold me)

It truly is amazing technology, I will be interested in regular updates as you and the cows get use to the new system. Can I suggest you might look at getting a foldable phone to give you more screen to work with. I have an older foldable phone which I find very helpful, but you might consider the new Pixel Pro 9 fold is a very good phone and opens up into a big screen.

If you put the top link in the top hole it will lift with less angle. Burkhart 3ptlink is the best bale feeder in nz. Has chains , galv deck and spins both ways . ours is 13 year old 300 bales a year no issues.

I used to own a hustler chainless feeder thinking it would be better, less moving parts etc. Recently we swapped it for a hustler chain round bale feeder, and it does a way better job at feeding out the bales more evenly and your more in control.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 күн бұрын
I haven't used a chained one before but your comment sums up what I was wondering, thanks!!
@tkinvy97502 күн бұрын
I can’t leave the hustler The problem with them is everything needs to be loaded right. Once that is achieved they’re brilliant. No need for a chain feeder to allow you to feed both ways just either sit the bale on the top roller to feed one way & leave it lower in the feeder if the bale is rolling out the other way. Get onto laying bails on their rounds & cracking only the bottom third of the plastic b4 loading.

Thanks for showing us all your learning to work with the Halter system! Really cool to see this system in action. Within a few weeks you'll never want without it probably. I'm wondering, how do the cows know where to go next after milking. Can you direct them into a new paddock as well with these? Once you remove or open all the fences, they never know which one is 'open' for them. So, how does that part work?
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 күн бұрын
Hey mate, great question. So after milking all the gates are set for the break they are heading to. I can't leave all the gates open otherwise it makes it a bit tricky for the cows and GPS guiding them. Removing fences is sweet but gates need to stay, just like normal
@basvdflier2 күн бұрын
@@TheOnceADayFarmer Thanks mate for the answer. Makes sense, I was breaking my head on how the collars could direct cows to the next field. But this makes sense the way you explain it. Again, thanks for all the information and videos you're making on your first experiences with Halter. I was so curious to see how this stuff works, now I know a lot by watching your last few vids. Cheers from across the globe from rainy, cold wintery Amsterdam!

Put your Top link into upper hole where it is attached on Tractor. The more parallel the top link is to bottom arms the more flat the feeder will stay when you lift it.

Rather than buying the hydraulic ram, (probably $1Kplus) it can be preferable to go and find a 3 point linkage mounted chain round bale unroller. The mounted Chainless is still a good model for feeding large square bales (silage & hay), the trailed Chainless for summer when the ground is drier and better(imo) design than the 3 point linkage chainless. If considering trailed feeders for the summer. A Cambridge farm had a 3 bale (lighter than the bigger models) Kombi feeder some year ago (could have been Agmech/ now Farmec and the model is no longer made). Might be worth seeing if it is still around, they could do round, squares, pit silage and (maize silage?)
@Kiwifarmerboy3 күн бұрын
I know every farmer has their own way but I'm sure a set of forks and unwrapping it over the Bale feeder would save a lot of that waste on the ground but hey each to their own that's just how I do it
@Kiwifarmerboy3 күн бұрын
Chained feeder and hydrolic top link are gold thats how we roll
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 күн бұрын
haha yeah you're right there. I do that sometimes, but I find when you peel or cut the inside wrap the bake can fall on the plastic and find it hard getting it out so prefer this way, but as you say each to there own
@Kiwifarmerboy2 күн бұрын
Yeah I'm so glad our contractor went back to Net wrapping got so sick of the plastic, is always wrapped into the silage.
@Honkythehorse2 күн бұрын
I can take the plastic and netting off and carry my bale's on forks with nothing dropping, we have a great contractor In coastal taranaki that uses JD combi bailer and they are tight. . Is your top link set on the right position on tractor (John Deere has 3 mounting positions) the hitch should lift evenly

I have questions. What if you hadn’t put your drone up, when would you have seen the leaking trough? Also, when/ how do the calves start training? Will they be in a paddock with a couple of older cows as coaches? Don’t get me wrong, I think this is awesome but there is the potential to miss something happening around the place if you are not out on the ground as much as you were prior to this.
@TheOnceADayFarmer2 күн бұрын
Valid questions! I always check the troughs when cows come out and set gates for the next day so would've fixed it pretty much the same time as when I did. But with the flexibility of not having to be there I get what you mean, If I wasn't around it would've been done that day but maybe a few hours later. I have wondered about flow meters on water lines or wifi tank levels so if I wasn't around in the winter I would know if there was a leak. Cattle can only begin training from 12 months of age i'm pretty sure so once the R2s come back from grazing they will get trained then.
