Nearly the first entire season is just worldbuilding and establishing the characters and the rules and logic of gem-related things. I think it's around episode 25 or something that the show is starting to drop some real bomb revelations. Season 1 may be a drag to sit through as a whole, but it also has some of the most memorable episodes. Possibly because they contrast so well up against the goofy and laudback townsfolk episodes, so the 'filler-y worldbuilding episodes still play an important role in the core experience.
