While I don't think any of the previous episodes are bad (I'd say mid at worst), Giant Woman is still where the show gets good. It introduces Gem fusion, the catchall plot device for dealing with complex relationship dynamics in this show, and one of the most interesting lore pieces in general. More importantly, though, this is when SU assumes its true form: a rad musical! I mean heck, Giant Woman got me to sing in my review of it, and that's really saying something.

This is because Amethyst's living in the moment attitude and Pearl's Single minded focus carry over to Opal, who is both. In other words, fusions not only possess attributes from the gems involved, but they sometimes work together to create something entirely new!

A (non-spoiler) further explanation of fusion: it’s being emotionally in sync. The dance helps them get in sync with eachother, but they have to be emotionally in sync for it to work- they were only able to fuse when they both wanted to save Steven, and they were forcefully separated when they got pushed out of sync. Fusion is used as a metaphor for the characters relationship with eachother.

Opal singing "Giant Woman" was a clever way to show how fusions work. They're their own entities with their own personalities, just happen to be made up of individual people who still know you if their components did previously. It's like the same person(people), but also something entirely new. Also, it's funny you bring up Steven's relationship with the other Crystal Gems, and then we get an episode dedicated to seeing two of them try to work together. And then of course the introduction of fusion, something that requires them to work together in the most absolute sense of literally _being in sync_

It's talked about a lot, but I really appreciate the way this show's music is at the core of its DNA. I love that all the Gems have their own musical identity in the soundtrack - Pearl's jazzy piano, Amethyst's cheap electronic drums, Garnet's synth bass, Steven's chiptunes - and how that carries into their fusion themes. When Pearl and Amethyst fuse, they each have their part in the lead-up dance (called Amalgam in the soundtrack), but Opal's theme isn't just a recap of their individual themes; it's something entirely new built from the, ah, fusion of their musical identities. It communicates so much without any laborious explanation!

Opal fact: Opal is nearly literally perfect. Due to her being a fusion of both Amethyst and Pearl, two near complete opposites, her fusion allows her to reach a near “zen” like state that’s very calm and competent. Her only downside is that unfortunately she’s very forgetful. Not enough to forget very important things or people, but she can easily forget small things or having items on her.

Something that the show never, in my opinion, does quite a good enough job of explaining: fusion does not explicitly need to be initiated by a dance. It just needs the fusees to be in sync with each other, physically, emotionally, or in terms of their goals and mindset, and then make physical contact. There also seems to be some component of them really needing to draw strength of some kind from each other in the moment, too, or at least it helps. Getting in sync by dancing is just the easiest way to do that on demand.

I have seen people do reactions of Steven universe before and this show has a whole lot of songs in it. They have found a way to keep the songs in while still allowing monetization. I think what they did was put the song out of key or deepen it or raise it's volume. I know one group cut up the song a bit, not showing everything in the song, but still having certain parts in that they wanted. Don't know, just wanted to give you my two sense on it.

Anyways, the majority of the fandom had long speculated that it was a fusion of all four crystal gems (garnet, amethyst, Pearl, and rose), but we were shocked to find out that it was actually the petrified corpse of their greatest enemy. The small group that had been laughed at for correctly theorizing this were greatly vindicated that day.

Now that you know about fusing, it is time to tell you what really happened to Steven's mom... She and Greg loved each other and tried fusion. But it doesn't work with humans. What ended up happening is that it destroyed Rose's mind and turned her into a little clone of Greg. Since then, Greg has been raising her as his "son", wanting her back but afraid of what will happen to Steven when that happens. Also explains why Greg lives somewhere else. It hurts him to see his love like that.

Watching Mosco finally get to see SU has been awesome! As a huge fan of the show, getting to see someone react to these pivotal episodes is so much fun! oh to answer your question while also avoiding spoilers, yes every gem can fuse with any other gem, regardless of size or power or type, and no there is no limit to the number of gems that can be involved in a fusion, theoreticly you could fuse every single member of the gem race togather into a single likely gigantic entity. and that fusion would be its own unique person. now dont ask for any spicific fusions youll get in the show, thats for you to find out naturaly.

Finally, one of the most exciting aspects about this show, fusion! As for the songs, I do recommend either distorting or muting the audio in the show since I will say it now, this show is essentially a musical.
