Is it just me or do other folks out there find speeding drivers on motorways to be irritating?
In this clip I have cruised up behind the truck in front, timing the approach to drop in behind the first speeding driver; I've dropped to 67MPH on my speedo, as I move out and I'm back on the gas and soon back to 70MPH.
I know this is going to be a bit tight as I can see speeder number two about 150 metres back when I move out. As I begin to move in, he's closed the gap to between 25 and 30 metres, as I straighten up in the left lane, he's coming alongside me - all that in just 10 seconds (I counted the frames). So he's travelled about 100 metres further during the same 10 seconds. That's about 41m/s or 90MPH. (Why have I gone from 150m to 100m? I reviewed the footage and calculated it - read on to see why).
And then Chummy, who clearly feels I should have dropped 20MPH and sat behind the truck so that he could continue his 90MPH dash without having to exercise his braincell, thinks "CARVE HIM UP!!!".
As it is, he doesn't miss a beat and disappears ahead in similar fashion to the way he came up behind; I have merely offended his eyeballs with the rear of my wee car, I have not slowed him down - he did that by swerving in front of me.
But if he and others like him actually observed the speed limit, those of us with the funny idea that speed limits are there for a reason, could make better and safer progress - we would have the assurance that when travelling at 70, we should not get pursued by some prat determined to @##-*(?) us.
On this occasion, I have masked the reg plate of Chummy's car - I won't next time.....
To those of you out there who routinely speed on the motorways, you should not be surprised when someone slows you down when they overtake. We don't do it to be awkward (well, some do) - it's just that it's far easier to judge speed and distance through a windscreen than it is in a mirror (note the correction above). Drivers who observe speed limits are tied to a measure of faith that if we are doing 70, there should NOT be anyone coming from behind who is going faster; who doesn't have blue lights flashing - and frankly, I resent having to speed and thrash the nuts off my wee car in order to avoid being stuck behind every slow moving vehicle on the motorway.
