Thank you for all the supportive words. A few things I probably could have expanded on: - I am very much open to the idea of making videos with new gear if I'm not speaking in them. The problem is that few companies would want this and it's KZbin algorithm poison. - I should've emphasized this better: No part of me feels like I'm "giving into the trolls" or "letting trolls win". Those who do value this channel will just see more inspiring and educational content, those who exist solely in the geartube community will see one less face on the weekly treadmill of content. - I have no ill feelings towards Polyend, or really anyone in-particular here. When I explain these things to someone who isn't part of this space, I probably sound like Brad Pitt from 12 Monkeys. It's the same ridiculous controversy with the company name changed every few weeks and for some reason I unintentionally volunteered to be the spokesperson for it. - I've managed to make some of the most viewed gear content on this platform this year and lose money in the process. I started an NPO that is bound by law to make all transactions public at the end of the year. I routinely disclosed my friendships and biases. If THAT is considered "shilling", I simply cannot offer more. This already wasn't sustainable. - Finally, in my position, spending money on gear was actually more problematic than receiving or borrowing a prototype because confirmation bias is MUCH stronger, and nobody is immune to it. I will take a bullet for something I spent $400 on while having no emotion at all regarding something that showed up for free.

I got divorced earlier in the year .. and finally joined a band. Started actually going out with others to play and make music.. I realized 90% of my gear was a waste and pointless. I sold almost all of it . I now look at most of the gear channels for what they are, not entertainment, but commercials to try to push products on you.

Interesting. I had this feeling once that the whole music business is to sell people on the idea that they too could be musicians and that is what guitar stores and other gear stores are. Imagine if you spent that money and time on what would actually be your career?

Absolutely right. Years ago, remember hearing that the vast majority of all music gear sold, is never recorded & released and never gigged. And that reminds me of even before then, in a marketing class, being told that when you sell a product such as perfume, you aren't selling a scent. You are selling dreams. And musical gear is much the same. The buyers are buying a dream of becoming a top musician. And in reality, the majority never achieve that. So eventually go looking for the next bit of kit that will get them there. And so on. And something that's surprised me with a few succesful musicians I've known - they don't keep buying the latest thing. There's big selling producers out there still using old versions of Ableton.

I know, people bad. But you both made a bobo here. Uploading first piece of music to youtube? Ooouch, should have started within a musical community, ultimateguitar, reddit, other music forums. Not one artist ever wrote their first song and had people come up and say it was great, because it wasn't. It doesn't happen like that because you need experience and knowledge to be able to use the tools that is used in writing and producing music. Sure a 10yr old savant kid could write a great piece, but since you have to guard the comment section. I kinda doubt that your kid is a savant, doesn't mean he won't become a great artist, but that shit takes years of dedication. You kinda kicked your kid into the swimming pool before teaching him how to swim. Teach kiddo little bit about swimming before you go swimming next time, ehh? Or at least go swimming somewhere the water is not too deep. The water known as youtube is pretty deep.

It was the last day of shooting and I just grabbed my cloths and my coffee maker and walked off into the sunset. Haven’t looked back since. Cheers to all them film crew’s out there, but it’s just not for me. Not cut out for it. So now I just play my synths, samplers, and instruments for my self only. Do a little photography too. I was a child growing up with your music benn. Only 10 years old listening to the flasbulb - red extensions of me and my vacant life. Growing up, you were my hero and I even used to tell my dad how I wanted to be like you when I was older. I struggled with bipolar disorder and had problems being normal like other kids and you and the squarepusher were my only 2 artists I even had on rotation. I'm glad to see more people knowing about you, and I do hope your channel grows even more.

When i see a video of you popping up in my playlist, i always know i am going to have a good time listening to a laidback and cool dude, who loves making music, playing around with toys and always curious to find new ways to make music. As a tv editor and musician myself, i know that good criticism is very important to grow and get better. But some people are just destructive, have no anger management and wanna see your world burn. These ppl have been around since and now the internet gives them a platform. Just saw a video yesterday with the same topic and it's quite sad because you guys put a lot of heart and time into it as well giving your opinions a name and face. I guess that's the stress test every KZbinr has to get through. You can't satisfy everyone. Don't let it get to you and keep on exploring. Cheers Ben (In short: I just love what you do man 😀)

I’ve been watching your videos for years! The first time I remembering seeing you interacting with people online was on Reddit with the Synthrotek misery where you talked about offering to pay to rebrand gearslutz. I have always appreciated you pushing for a less divisive world we can all make art in. I will miss your gear videos. But, I hope to see more science and adventure videos (you and Cameron in the cave is one of my favorite videos in the last year or so). Please be well!

You are one of the most transparent and passionate musicians on KZbin. To anyone that made you feel like you are being anything but your sincere self, f**k you. I will never understand why people watch videos just to complain about them. You’re a GOAT, Benn, and so many of us love your content and personality. It’s why us “normal people” (grains of salt and all) that watch content we like… well, watch it. If I don’t like it, I don’t watch it. I don’t care about most sports so I don’t watch much sporting content… who populates their own KZbin feed with content they actively dislike? Sounds like a *SKILL ISSUE* and Benn isn’t the one with said issue… Some of you folks need to get a life or maybe write a song about how you feel because there isn’t much worse cringe than nonproductive “musicians” bagging on real musicians. Unsure how a well priced and cool groovebox is even remotely a hot take. The device involved here is literally called PLAY. I guess your channel isn’t the kind of parasocial drama some of these folks require to find happiness by being a toxic POS behind a keyboard. *BENN YOU RULE - STAY TRUE* ❤❤❤❤❤❤

You're one of the only gear reviewers I watch as you review the gear from the perspective of someone who just wants to use it to make music, not for the sake of making a product video. Your perspective is more honest then just about anyone I have seen on this platform and that why I subscribe. I think that having a unique personal perspective will always generate some tension as there is nothing that everyone will ever completely agree on.

If there's any question in your mind if your gear reviews are inspiring, or fun to watch: I've been in a rut for a while. I keep making the same... samey shit, to the point that I just turn the shit off and walk away... I got about 3/4 of the way through the Play+ video before getting the urge to make something, pulled out my ESX-1 and made the first beat I've actually liked in like 6 months. A little bit of inspiration goes a long way I guess. Anyway, not trying to convince you to keep doing it, because I like the video essays too, and maintaining your sanity comes first, but I just felt the need to share. And dw I came back to watch the other 25% lol

That was me with the sweatshirt question. I apologized in the Polyend video comments, and I would like to apologize here as well. I actually think Benn is a rare beacon of integrity in this community. For some odd reason I mistakenly thought he was trying to send a religious message with the shirt thing. I know, it really seems foolish now. But I guess I was in some kind of mood. So, unfortunately, I typed before I thought. Even though Benn has proven himself time and again to be upfront and straightforward in all his messages. Anyway, I apologize to you Benn and I apologize to everyone here for adding to the vitriol. That wasn't my intent at all. But I will own it and try my best to do better. Thanks everyone.

I totally understand your decision. Even if 99.9% of death treats from internet trolls are totally empty, you still have to take all of them seriously for your own safety, not to mention the safety of those who are close to you. You just never know with some people out there. Having to deal with that shit would no doubt be stressful for anyone and I can totally see how it would sap all of the fun out of making gear content. Perhaps I'm one of the few that's sad to see you step away from gear videos. The video you made on the FLKey convinced me to pick one up for myself and I have really enjoyed using it. There were plenty of other videos from other creators on it, but you definitely did the best job of demonstrating all of its capabilities and its unique integration with FL Studio. So I for one have always really appreciated your input on both hardware and software.

Thank you for all the vids thus far. Suggestion for a new series. What if instead of reviewing the gear you explore the synthesis engines and other how it works type content when truly new pieces of hardware come around. First, I appreciate you making this video and being so frank. Second, thanks for all the gear you've maybe not so much reviewed as in-depth demo-ed. I've certainly benefited from those videos. You can please some of the people, some of the time. Never has that been truer than in social media. Sadly, the small percentage who have zero social skills and a mountain of bile for everyone get on these forums and just spew, and that effs it up for everyone. I think a lot of people are really fed up with how toxic all social media has become. It's like an endless parade of trolls and shitposters. I'm definitely tired of it, and really questioning the value of the various Internet pockets I've inhabited.

The most insane thing to me was how it continued after pulling out your old MPC's, as if all your other gear and experience didn't matter, either. While I know that much of it was due to jealousy, tribalism, and the toxicity of the internet...damn. Here we are the following year, with a totally different piece of gear, set of circumstances, and community. Guess we both saw it coming, with that whole eyebrow crack...sorry. Hey man! Gotta say first off, really appreciate how honest and upfront you were in the video. That's some real nerve! My Clarett crapped out on me halfway, so I missed the last part, but I still wanted to share a couple of thoughts with you, might be helpful. I've been in tough spots too, like what you're dealing with now. A while back, I had to decide whether to stay in a 2.5-year relationship or call it quits. Tough call, right? Both choices had their ups and downs, and it's never easy when you're the one steering the ship. So, a friend suggested I just jot down my thoughts on paper, kinda like a pros and cons list. No need for it to be perfect or structured. Man, there's something about writing stuff down that helps clear your head. Definitely gave me some clarity. Hope it might bring you the same. Always worth a try, only takes like a few seconds anyway. I don't think you owe anyone an explanation, or an "excuse", as you said, to anyone. KZbin's really a place of its own. That used to be a good thing... Now, it's just one of the many variables that people use to interact with their lives. I remember when people didn't even know what KZbin was. Good old days. Comment sections were nicer back then too. New generations are rough. Don't take this the wrong way, but I do think you sound conflicted about all this, and to be fair, I completely get why. The folllowing is coming from a good place. Have you ever thought about talking to a therapist or counselor maybe? You'd be surprised what these people could do for you. It's a surprise how much one can get out of just 1-3 sessions even if you're tight on cash. The lessons learned may be invaluable and help you in many other areas of life as well. It's not so much about being in a bad place; it's about keeping your head straight. Furthermore, there you'll be able to talk to someone you can trust that can help you deal with the complex emotions and feelings you may be feeling from somethinhg turned sour like this. The kind of public attention you get, is something they might be able to help you handle and deal with it better too. Thanks for all your work, and best of luck! Cheers.

This is pretty sad news. You and Loopop were always the two voices I'd look for when researching anything music tech related. Loopop's vids are a fantastic resource for seeing what a bit of kit can technically do, but your vids always felt like a really inciteful, artist's view. Your video on the Polybrute is a big reason why it is at the top of my dream gear list. The videos have just always really spoken to me and it's a shame that they aren't going to be any more of them. It's a shame that a few people have to go and ruin it for everybody but c'est la vie.
