Overheating is a chronic problem with the FK8. Over the past weekend at Buttonwillow track day the ambient temperature was hovering 103. Only the early morning session was I able to complete the entire session without overheating. All subsequent sessions I can get two clear laps at the most and the temp nearly reach max. I have to back off and wait for the temp to come down and then one more clean lap and the temp goes back up again. The CTR is not a good car to be used on the track in hot summer days. My car is almost bone stock except for a strut tower bar.

I'm a whole year late but... is this the overheating a USDM thing? In Malaysia, our FK8R came in 2 variants... either Japan import, or Malaysian spec (ECU tuned slightly lower than Japan's to suit our gas at RON95 minimum), but I have never heard anyone complained about the car overheating. There were plenty of tracked stock FK8 with no single issue.

As an Ep3 owner and having raced and tracked many Subaru over the years I am gobsmacked 😶 I can literally drive my Ep3 all day flat out on track with no heat issues with standard cooling. Honda have they really not thought about the heat and a turbo motor let alone heat soak ? Maybe time for them to stick to doing what they do best N/A engines. I get it’s hotter in US but really surely a car built for there should have undergone vigorous testing there and not only the Nurburgring devastating news for a Honda engineering lover

My opinion, the problem with K20C1 is the exhaust manifold design which is integrated in the head “headifold” that’s means the engine cooling system need to carry over an additional load, and it’s not an easy one, the engine cooling system need to cool down transmission oil, engine oil, crankcase, engine head and turbo and now the exhaust gases, that’s a lot for a standard cooling system. Reason why several cars with “headifolds” uses additional coolant radiators and several electric waters pumps to counter this, which is mainly uses for emission purposes. If we add to this load, a performance oriented engine (300+ hp) a track capable road car and power increases, is just too much for conventional cooling systems designs. For example BMW uses the “headifold” only in low performance engines and in those cases they add several additional radiators and electric pumps to counter the heat load coming from the exhaust gases in the engine head, big omission for this amazing car.

I was hot for this car until I started hearing about this issue, along with the transmission problems, the 1.5 oil dilution issues, and then the fact that it is made in England not Japan, then the price gouging, all that kind of soured me on buying this car. So instead I went with a Golf R, stock the handling is not as good as the Type R, but with a few simple suspension modifications and the AWD, it can be even better. Anyway I still like the Type R and my point isn't to argue which car is better or any nonsense like that, but to possibly mention a solution to this problem. I live in TX and track on days far above what you described here, and the Golf has never over heated. I am also making far beyond stock power with a huge upgraded IC that sits in front of the entire radiator. I have been tracking for many years and push the car very hard, I have had over heat issues with other cars in the really hot summer months, but not this one, and that is with no cooling modifications at all. The difference is the Golf has not one, or two, but three coolant radiators. Besides the large main radiator those two side front ducts are also functional and contain auxiliary coolant radiators, and that combination apparently does the trick. I have seen the Type R with the bumper cover off, there is plenty of room to add similar auxiliary coolers on this car. Is no one offering this option? You could get rid of those cheesy looking fake ducks and replace it with something that looks cool and is actually functional. Here is a some images showing how they do it: on the Golf, it would require some fabrication but seems very doable. flic.kr/p/2jaXMd4 As you can see it is pretty simple, those auxiliary radiators are just T'ed into the main radiator lines in parallel. Seems like it would solve your cooling issue and get rid of those stupid looking fake ducks and replace them with actual ducts. Seems like a win win to me and might be cheaper than buying another car.

Eric Michel there was one company out there putting together a dual oil cooler kit just like the setup you are talking about but don’t ever think it made it to market. While I haven’t done any track days I have a buddy who does track his and he regularly passes CTRs that are slowed by overheating issues. Too bad that Honda dropped the ball in so many ways for such a highly anticipated car. Also I couldn’t get past the styling of the CTR, it’s brutal and really suited for the “boy racer” crowd.

Hi Micheal thanks for sharing your experience with your R I have watched your videos since you got your car. I am also having this issue and just recently experienced it at Laguna Seca this past race weekend with SCCA. My whole day qualifying was all good but came race day Sunday at my forty minute 21 lap race session was disrupted by my car overheating. Had to back off the throttle and all the cars i had passed caught up to my R. I have not done any grill mods or radiator mods to my car only turbo jacket and downpipe coverings. This end of the month is Cal Club race weekend and have to consider going a different route now. I just ordered a sports grill and an aluminum radiator and am going to take out my ac condensor unit so the radiator can have direct airflow. Was going to go with mishimoto oil cooler but am now leaning towards secondary radiator unit and a vented carbon fiber hood. I was thinking of going old school and spacing my hood but have heard that it affects your aerodynamics. VP racing also sales a racing fluid that supposed to lower engine temps up to 100 degrees. I hope you get this issue solved man because the R is an exceptional when its not overheating. I think I will be going back to Amsoil signature engine oil since I read it combats heating temps. 🤷 we shall see.

I think the only way to battle the heat soak is to use water injection and relocating the inlet away from being right above the turb . There is an opening down the left side if the engine bay if you look straight down on the side of the inlet connection there’s a reservoir where the inlet could be routed down below. The maf harness just needs to be extended as well as the breather connections.

He's not talking about intake temperature heatsoak, he's talking about the coolant and oil temperature getting too hot.
@weduhpeople85044 жыл бұрын
Ryan McFarland Well hot inlet heats up the air charge before it even goes in the combustion chamber which raises the engine temp and in turn raises the coolant temps making the dash’s temp gauge rise above half and keeps climbing going full on at the track.

If you’re still on the stock turbo you may be getting too much back pressure which could be causing heat soak also. Talk to 4Piston, Rampage, PRL. I’m about to install the 2020 Type R intercooler, Actuity reverse radiator hoses, Spoon thermostat, Mocool cooling additive and the rest distilled water. I also just replaced the blocked front fog light vents. My R heat soaked on the way to Vegas at 115 degree heat with a full cargo load of passengers and luggage only at wot especially when driving up a hill or rising grade. Still plan to install the HKS oil cooler. Also a secondary smaller radiator mounted up front on the grill can help. But imho water injection is the key to driving full on mitigating heat soak.
@weduhpeople85044 жыл бұрын
It’s actually heatsoaked twice going to Vegas. My a/c would stop working so I turned the a/c off and switch to the heater. It’s a trick to cool the motor faster but needless to say my wife complained about how hot it was getting in the cabin. When I eased in the throttle and coasted a bit the temps would lower back down turned on the a/c and it would work again.

I'm by no means an expert. I grew up in the 80's when modifying small and big block chevy's was the rage. Your issue has been attacked from all different directions so far without resolution. I understand the frustration. Reminds me of back in the day when there was no substitute for "displacement" people were boring out 454's to 472 etc....Makes me wonder if the honda block has siamese cylinders (not enough meat between the cylinders) Chevy made this mistake way back in the mid 70's when they sold trucks with a 400 small block. Basically a 350 bored to the max. I owned one and it ran hot all the time in the summer and when towing. You could put 3 radiators on it and it wouldn't run cool. No issues at all if it was cool out or you didn't get on it. My point is it wasn't about cooling the radiator fluid, or in your case that and the incoming air, it was about the engine cylinder to cylinder wall spacing that created too much heat (when pushed) to displace by any means. Just trying to think outside the box regarding your issue. Good luck.

I am at a crossroads with my Type R, I have need to do cooling mods and I need more power to achieve better laptimes.... Unfortunately though I believe adding more power will negate the cooling mods and I would end up overall disappointed. … Is it possible to add power to the Type R and prevent heat soak on a hot day at the same time? I had such a bad-time during the hot summer track days that I really just want to sell for something else... It is frustrating when you are taking turns very fast but still get a slower lap time because the power is being cut by so much. After my recent track day experiences and you are 1000% right and I went against your advice and my better judgement and went FBO (drop-in Turbo) with 426whp because I make choices that make no sense.. The result was exactly what I thought... it overheats within 4 hot laps on a 85-90 degree day. I ended up being pretty disappointed on the track day. I even got the message that told me to stop driving. Although I only have an Upgraded PWR Race Radiator which did not do anything to prevent overheating (only helps it cool down quicker), I did not do an oil cooler or hood vent, I don't think I'm even going to bother. That may get me another 2 laps... if that... I thought about turbo blanket but I think that would be pointless as well the turbo would just be heating up my coolant/oil regardless. I'm just going to do nothing else to the Type R. I'm going to stop spending money on it and I'm going to focus on other things. The Type R has became a money pit for me. I am debating even selling it and joining the BMW M crew, while I based all my videos and channel around the Type R I can always change. Now I know why most track dudes sell their CTRs... I guess I just had to experience it for myself. I will prioritize doing track days in the early spring and fall/late fall. Type R just does not have the endurance... I'm leaning towards Lotus Exige for my next streetable track vehicle but I don't know if I could live with it everyday. I just love the idea of a Toyota engine in the Lotus. I will never figure out cooling on my Type R. My car is now a 2 hot lap car before it will start to pull power and start to overheat... and that is pretty sad for me. I can still do a time trial here and there and go out and come back in... but then that does not become very enjoyable... I like setting quick laptimes but I also like to stay out and enjoy myself and the car won't let me do that anymore.

Hi Michael, It seems like this build is going more towards a track car than a street car. Have you considered removing the ac condenser? It would eliminate a huge blockage of air to the radiator. Im betting that would make the difference you are looking for.

I'm following your steps to try and prevent overheating with a Varis Style hood (EPR), Js style grill (EPR or eBay mesh grill) and upgrading the stock radiator to a C&R. I'm also considering the SiriMoto oil cooler kit. Are there any other key upgrades or todos you recommend? I'm on a stock tune and don't plan to tune because generally speaking more power = more heat and I've already got an excess of heat. Thanks for the great videos, keep it up!! **EDIT** Just finished this video and you mostly answered my question :D
@GridZilla4 жыл бұрын
Yep only thing I’d switch up in what you want to do is instead of the Sirimoto oil cooler go with either HKS or Greddy side mount, that way you aren’t putting another element in front of your radiator

So according to you the intercooler is cooling the air, that goes into the turbo (8:45)... Aight... What else do you know about cars?
@GridZilla4 жыл бұрын
Boy we got some nit pickers. Cools the compressed air after the turbo before the engine. In the video just had a lapse. Thanks for your input.
@grigorystrumila17504 жыл бұрын
Well, that's a different story, isn't it? Anyway, coming back to your issue with the cooling of the car: you want it to stand up to racecar treatment and not overheat? Then remove the obvious part no racecar on earth carries: the AC! The condenser is blocking a lot of airflow and the compressor is eating power and therefore generates heat. If you want the car to have all those convinience stuff, don't complain it's not a racecar.

Everyone is still having cooling issues and it makes me laugh. My 10 gen si going full boost don’t see temps above low 190’s. Why? There are three stages for the cooling fan activation. I modified my fan turn on temps to keep the engine cooler. I can take it one step further and install a lower temp thermostat. But it’s not needed. Check your settings in Hondata

Did you have a tune or add more power to your FK8? I'm wondering if the FK8 would still overheat if all the cooling mods were added (radiator, oil cooler, reverse hoses, vented hood, etc.) but everything else was stock? So just running the base tune and not touching the engine at all.
@GridZilla2 жыл бұрын
Yes there was power added and of course cooling mods without additional power would make the cooling more effective but that wasn’t the point. The point was to able to add bolt on power and cooling and be able to sustain a full session at the track without overheating.

Unfortunately most so call aftermarket maker or shop they dont have much to do with road racing. Good luck finding a pro to deal with your problem. One thing i would say, get a real ecu / datalogger, that way u know exactly how long and when u have the overheat or any problem u come across. Plus the data would help u be a better driver if that is ur end goal.
