@@t3dotgg gradients would be so far down my list of things to care about in a browser, but even so, I just looked it up, and it looks like Firefox does support gradients? Maybe there's a specific type of gradient it can't do? Either way, I just want to clarify that my comment was mostly tongue-in-cheek. So happy others are starting to use it. I signed up as soon as I heard firefox had a fancy looking visual update with a decent speed boost. The updates are a little aggressive, sometimes things break, move, settings get changed etc, but as a dev, the #1 selling point is the firefox dev tools. If you've not used them, they are 10x better than the chrome ones.

For me being Firefox based is the biggest plus for Zen. I know Firefox might be missing some things like view transitions (which will be implemented) or WebHID but that's because they have very solid standard positions and Google is working against that. Actually it is Firefox that allows this level of customization that Zen is built on top of. And Zen is really good at making all of that power that exists in Firefox much more accessible to users who don't want to fuss about with custom chrome css and js. But I don't like vertical tabs so I just have some css in regular Firefox that auto-hides the url and bookmarks bar and shows it on hover. The tabs are integrated in window decorations on windows, so I lose none of the screen real estate (with the assumption that I want window decorations, which I do), have tabs available all of the time, and the url bar and all of that is easily accessible when I need it. There is no other browser that would let me do this, at least I don't know any Unfortunately Firefox actively hides this power from users and does not embrace or even support it that well, but Zen does it justice, and is open source. I just hope they will support it well for a long enough time

100% this. I moved away from Arc when I was setting up my new computer and retried Firefox after many years. True. There are so many great userChrome themes and user scripts. Once you go down this route, it’s quite hard to use any other browser. I am now trying out Zen just for its hover for vertical tabs in compact mode. But I feel it’s too distracting as it opens up even when cycling tabs. I think I am going to write or find a user script that simply hides (toggles) all Firefox UI. That way I can keep using Sideberry for tabs as well.

Same, no idea what performance issues he had, it's always been very performant for me, both on Windows and Linux (maybe the macOS experience is bad? No idea). Also, personally, I don't see how it "looks like shit" but to each their own I guess. All that aside though, calling Brave nothing more than a Chromium web3 skin is such a misinformed, bad take. Brave has some of the best default privacy settings of any (mainstream) browser and it's built-in 'Shields' has worked better for me than any other browser + extension combo for blocking trackers and ads. And that's in addition to all the QoL/UX stuff they add on top of Chromium. I do agree that I wish the web3 stuff was disabled by default or at the very least, asked you on first run if you want it enabled or not, but at the end of the day, it's only a few clicks to disable it all. What more can we expect from Theo other than bad takes, it's pretty on brand for him at this point.

Yeah, I've been on Firefox since they released Quantum and it's been almost perfect. I have to use Chrome for work due to some stupid extensions but it feels so frustratingly slow compared to Firefox. The only thing that FF needs to fix IMO that does bother me day to day is 4K playback on YT at higher bitrates. When running some high bitrate content at 4K 2x speed, it skips a lot. As for Zen, I switched to it pretty early on when it was still very nascent. Mostly because I wanted a way to hide toolbars and sidebars completely without having to mess about with extensions or configs. Then I got hooked by the Zen Mods, they are super cool and a great way to make your browser truly look and sometimes even work how you want it to. Plus I will always support a team of open source devs trying to stick it to big tech whenever possible.

I wonder what would be your take on Orion. It’s WebKit based, so super energy efficient. Has vertical tabs. Supports both chrome and Firefox extensions (which can be buggy) and since you don’t need Windows/Linux support, you’d enjoy that same early days of Arc feeling where they were tailoring it for the macOS experience.

@ he’s taking about using gestures in a laptop to trigger “back / forwards” in the browser history. I suggest using CMD+arrows left/right instead. If you are using a mouse, you should have back/forwards buttons on the left side of your mouse which you can trigger with your thumb, also much faster than any funny mouse gesture.

I don't understand the hate with Brave. The UI is clean, it has vertical tabs, you can indeed expand/collapse the sidebar with the vertical tabs, you can put your vertical tabs on the right, it has side by side split tabs (beta but works great), you can customize all the keyboard shortcuts, you can even use the address bar as a command bar, chromium based, there are tons of flags for customization, and you can hide all of the web 3 stuff for good. It's been super fast for me and don't have problems with lag at all. I totally agree with the cmd + shift+ c thing as I do that just as often. So much so that I wrote an extension that does this for Safari.

Awesome, now that Theo switched to Zen, thanks to Firefox being so open and customizable, maybe now we can have more contributions to Firefox and somebody very known and vocal who can trash the websites that DECIDE to not support Firefox for absolutely no good reason (which is easy to prove when you change the user agent to appear like Chrome and see that evrything works perfectly). Theo, here's the formal request to revisit Firefox (like, say, when version 135 arrives) and do a video of what it is missing from it, what is wrong, what is insufficient and so. For me it's still my browser simply because of full open source and it works good enough for me. On the developer side, the fact that it has on the network developer tools the "Edit and Resend" makes it better than Chromium-based browsers. Not to mention that for mobile, it's the only one that supports extensions.
