I reckon Ian, everything has a knack to it, and once you get it you're sorted. So good for you, you just may be on to something!

Hi Ian - I assume that you are aware of this: The governing equation for capacitor design is: C = εA/d, In this equation, C is capacitance; ε is permittivity, a term for how well dielectric material stores an electric field; A is the parallel plate area; and d is the distance between the two conductive plates. If you know the thickness of the insulator and its material you should be able to work out what area you require and therefore how much foil to use. The capacitance increases the THINNER the insulator. There are tables in the internet with the permittivity of various materials. To increase the capacitance, you need high permittivity. Teflon, for example, has LOW permittivity which is why it’s a good insulator for signal and speaker cables because it DOESN’T store energy. So the opposite requirement as for a capacitor. Wishing you all the best with the project - you’re very inventive and resourceful so I’ll be curious to see how you get on! I hope this was helpful. All the best, Rob in Switzerland.

I've been following you for a long while. Especially when making your own RCA cables, to better speaker wire. This would help because a lot of manufacturers dealing with capacitors they say the best ones to have is the Copperfield. But I wonder the paperback on the copper wouldn't that work? By itself wouldn't the paper be a pretty good insulator?
