So you know, yes you can actually do this Phly, if it's demilitarized (the weapons are removed, which in this case means the gun and fire control systems). I know this because at one point I actually did look into importing a jet myself (an ex-Italian Air Force F-104 that was sitting in a scrapyard) for a museum. There was a retired Marines pilot who bought a Harrier so it’s possible. Though if you want a flyable one then you’ll need experience with jet aircraft for the FAA to let you get one.

1000 or more hours in a single engine plane (cessna 172), and then 30 or more hours in the jet you want to fly, with an instructor or military experience. More or less 30 hours. l39 for example has many schools in the USA. The whole training is like 6k dollars if i am not wrong, maybe its more, but it depends on the school you go to. And it's not long, I doubt it's going to take longer for the other single engine aircraft.

Yeah I got a few friends that have done things like this and I have looked into it myself. A buddy of mine flies a B-25 at airshows and I know some of the guys at drive tanks here in Texas. As far as your state laws go I may have to do some research but the process for aircraft is fairly simple compared to tanks, especially non-functional aircraft. Shipping is also simple but expensive. Something like a MiG-21 they'll probably transport it on a flatbed semi trailer with the wings removed or, disassemble it slightly more and pack it up in 2-3 shipping containers. I could write more but.. hit me up if you need more info or I can put you in touch with some people with real world experience.

I would ask around on forums for military surplus. The process would be much the same for importing a tank. I would also say it probably wouldn’t be less or more difficult if it was flyable, so you might as well get a flyable one if you can find one you can afford. That would also open up the possibility of simply having someone fly it over instead of shipping it via a container, which could easily be more expensive than the plane itself. Then you could take flying lessons and actually fly a Mig21. I would also recommend a lawyer who has experience with weapon laws to help you navigate the ATF and FAA laws regarding the imports. Maybe reach out to various tank and aircraft museum curators for help finding those who can help you.

I know a gun broker who brokers deals from mostly the Ukraine. Firearms strictly (big ak guys) but he told me that the Ukrainians will import you anything if it nets them a profit so yea, hit my line they will sell you a tank but could probably scrounge up a mig if you asked nicely 😂

You’re gonna have to rent out a warehouse/ hangar at your local airfield. You will have to find all of its documentation and because it’s a Soviet built aircraft, I’m going to assume it’s not registered with the FAA. If it isn’t registered, I’d recommend you try to register it as an experimental aircraft which will allow you to circumvent a lot of maintenance paperwork and expenses. You will also need to hire an A&P rated mechanic and provide him or her with the service manuals and logs if the aircraft has them -if you plan to ever have it airworthy of course. (edit) also realized that the paperwork from the logistics from getting it over to the states is probably a head ache and probably very expensive.

MiG21's were very expensive for the Vietnamese and they knew they stood little chance. The trick was a massive success resulting in every MiG21 being shot down. I think it was around 25? I respect the aircraft for what it is. I just think people over hype them.

The East block countries esp Russia have ALL kinds of old jets for sale. The cheap ones are the ones that are not flight ready. The ones that you CAN fly are more expensive. But you can hop them from the western part of Russia to the East and then across the bearing sea to Alaska and then on to the lower 48 states. It has been done MANY TIMES!! You can even buy a Mig 29 and fly it home. Good luck though you need tons of paper work FAA approval And I believe that after burners have to be removed.

Do it. I’ve seen plenty of privately owned mig21s in hangars. Turn that thing into a VR sim!

I live in Austria and I also bought an retired Yugoslav MIG-21 located in Batajnica near Belgrade. I was surprised that i was allowed to keep the original 1980 Yugoslav livery on it. I had to go trough multiple procedures like demilitarization which the Austrian Army did. You also have to get the plane checked complete by multiple Profesionals to have it be completely fly worthy. As to where to put it...as i live in Salzburg and Salzburg has a Airport i asked if they have Hangars for rent to put my MIG-21 in which they did and that's where I store it. Might aswell ask around, i'm sure there are enough Airports renting out some Hangars ;)

I know where and where not you can store it. A storage locker would be fine as long as it doesn’t violate the storage lockers companies term. As for as shipment a permit might be required becuase it is technically military equipment. You can store it in your backyard to but not your front

You should contact the military aviation museum in VA beach. They are a private museum with over 25 operational military planes including an me262. I would assume they would know since it’s all privately owned.
