I’m on our HOA board. I can tell you this. Approach them and compromise. Tell them you feel like you are being singled out and why the other neighbors are allowed to keep theirs up. Tell them you need to see the rule written in the rules and regulations. The exemption might be because yours is an electric backboard and lights up opposed to a regular hoop! Ask and tell them you aren’t afraid to goto court because of the principle and you have nothing against them. Be cordial and you can come to a compromise.

I wish it was that easy but when there’s an HOA they have a set of rules aside from whatever he pays them monthly and they can charge him. Let me give you an example, in my neighborhood the HOA wouldn’t allow shopping carts on anyone’s driveway. Some people walked to the market and wanted to bring their stuff back with the cart right ? We had one neighbor fined $250 4x until he realized it’s a loss! That’s why I joined the HOA, I couldn’t beat them so I joined to make it better.
