It is ridiculous that they didn’t just make it possible to update the firmware on AirPods or Apple Watches by plugging them into a PC and using iTunes to download and install the update
@basiicbid8032
@basiicbid8032 2 ай бұрын
@@pigybankThat’s not really an equal comparison because Itunes is made by apple and is already used to update apple devices on a nonnative platform
@wydra9-1
@wydra9-1 2 ай бұрын
@@pigybankI’m sorry but that’s a bit of a Braindead Take (TM) that’s not how software works. AirPods are hardware, firmware is machine level code and is updated typically using a bootloader, those are typically secured using keys and connected to via standard protocols (uart over usb or straight usb). Apple makes iTunes, they could fairly easily transpose the code from their firmware updaters built into a Mac into a PC. It would be closer to saying “it’s ridiculous that I can’t update my switch controller by plugging it into my PC and using a Nintendo provided app to update the firmware." If you said that, you’d be right, it is ridiculous, or do you think Nintendo has a giant room full of switches to make sure their controllers are up to date before they ship?
@Balgoriusis

@@pigybank I do not agree with that analogy. Headphones are platform agnostic device. Controller is not.
@MiloMurphysLaw

@@pigybankfirst of all, I want to make it 100% clear: I have an iPhone, an Apple Watch, AirPods, an iPad Mini, several AirTags, I use Apple TV+ and Apple Maps and CarPlay, and in a perfect world I would also have an iMac and a MacBook. If it was possible, I would probably only own products made by Apple. So, I’m not saying this to hate on Apple at all in any possible way. But the example of connecting a Nintendo Switch controller to an Xbox could not possibly be any more different from what I’m talking about. I’m talking about using iTunes (WHICH IS MADE BY APPLE) to update AirPods (WHICH ARE MADE BY APPLE). Why is that not a possibility? If you wanted a more accurate comparison, it would be like if I buy a wireless mouse that works totally fine with my computer, except every year it requires a software update or else it’s slowly going to start lagging more and more, and the battery will start to die faster and faster. So, simple solution, just make sure the software is always up to date and you’ll never have a problem. *But* the only way to update the software is if you also buy a keyboard from that same company, which then includes a download key for their special software, which also requires a separate purchase to be able to download, then requires a monthly subscription payment, and you also have to pay extra for each individual time that you download a software update for your mouse or keyboard. And again, if you choose to just not update the software, they’ll slowly start to lag more and die faster and eventually just become completely unusable after a few years. Please just explain to me why I can’t use iTunes (MADE BY APPLE) to update AirPods (MADE BY APPLE). Why does it have to require an iPhone? What is the logical reason for that?? Please explain.
@pigybank
@pigybank 2 ай бұрын
@@Balgoriusis then why do I own some platform agnostic controllers that ironically work both with my Apple TV and my Mac, and my switch? Of course they’re 3rd party but still platform agnostic. But of course Nintendo doesn’t make their controllers to work with competing devices. It’s not in their interest. Meanwhile Apple does make their headphones work with 3rd party devices with the sole exception of the firmware update. Regardless I own many tech products that are hard or impossible to update. Apple is being held to a standard here that literally no other company is forced to live up to.

There's a bit more to it. The Watch isn't a regular phone and carriers typically don't support it as such. You generally need to get a service that shares the same number between the phone and the watch. In other words, in most countries you couldn't just buy the watch as a replacement for a phone. Additionally, I don't think Apple is in any way special, AFAIK it works try he same with other manufacturers.

Regarding Japanese cultural things: - You take the drink to where you are going-or if it's one of those little glass bottled health drinks you down it in front of the place you bought it and toss it. - There are garbage cans at conbini & train stations, but really you are meant to take your trash with you. (Make sure to sort it properly.) - I'm majorly lol-ing at "objectively terrible" food. I only ran into food I didn't like when ordering something really traditional (i.e., a taste I had not and had no desire to acquire, like chicken cartilage skewers). If you want good things there's a tone to try: udon, ramen, soba, gyudon (one of the few beef dishes I enjoy), kare ("curry," but don't expect it to taste like actual curry, it's its own thing), hiyashi chuka is one of my favorites, onigiri, oh definitely go out for okonomiyaki! Dude, there's so many things. I can't really explain how to find the right places to go, but if you aren't enjoying the food you're clearly doing something wrong. One thing to keep in mind is most dishes are seasonal. I'd estimate there's about 8 different "food seasons." But, I can't think of any bad ones. Maybe go to actual restaurants? lol Or even food stalls. - The idea that Japan is "high-tech" is a Western picture we paint onto them because they have really strong corporations (basically still zaibatsu, but technically not), so they are able to create great tech. But Japanese people are very reticent to try out new tech. Most people never jumped onto the home computer craze like we did; they don't really use credit cards (or when they do, they pay it off the next month.. not even as a cultural thing, that's just how Japanese cards usually work... You have to specifically tell them when it's a "revolving line of credit card"); my bank's ATM was only open the hours the bank was open, plus one hour before, after, and during their lunch shift which they all took at once; anything you want to buy online you usually give cash to someone at a conbini for the exact amount and then use the card they give you to use online (but you also pay most of your bills by having the conbini scan the bills barcode and give them cash, which is nice) honestly, living in Japan made me better at managing my finances because of having to keep enough cash on hand for everything; but yeah, basically they don't trust that tech will just work for the most part. On the other hand, when I moved there in 2008 they had HD TV on flip phones & NFC for train/subway passes on flip phones as well as keyless cars, so it's hit & miss. Another example of weirdly low tech was we were still using faxes, on a daily or even multiple times (per worker) per day when I left in 2012. Oh, and smartphones flopped when they were first introduced there, so Apple adapted emoji and they sold well (then they messed with them too much, misunderstanding what many of them were meant to convey and they've since gone out of fashion from what I've heard). - I've never seen a kaitenzushi (conveyor belt sushi) place where you don't stack you plates near you and they count them at the end. I have no idea what you were sending them down. - Regarding trains, if you don't live there you should always get the All Rail Pass, it simplifies the whole experience for tourists (and if you do live there you just swipe your phone because the ticket software is built in and you pay it monthly or more often your job does). The All Rail Pass is also cheaper if you are traveling a decent amount. - I think there were two tickets because you were taking a train between two different private train systems. - Osaka (or Kansai in general) is just weird period. It's not like anywhere else in Japan. - If you go back, try Nagoya. Sakae neighbourhood always has something going on, but there's other cool areas, too. Osu Kannon, the castle, Atsuta Jingu. Plenty of like touristy, but traditional as well as modern things for locals. Great city! Tons to do. And if you snowboard / ski Nagano (prefecture) is great, but you can find really fun slopes for better rates in Niigata (prefecture). Some are right on the bullet train line. My favorite was Shiga Kogen. It's not so much a ski-jo as it is a complex of 20 ski-jo that you can go between all day, then relax in an onsen after. A few times I even found ones that were completely empty besides me and one had a lovely outdoor one. Was so nice sitting in the hotspring outside seeing the blankets of snow with little snowflakes falling all around. Very peaceful end to a day.

Custom dictionaries with pop up displays, known word tracking and language parsing, automated flashcard creation to use in spaced repitition programs like anki. This stuff is getting more popular and better made all the time. Im using kimchi reader to read korean books, and i can use it on mobile android devices (as well as desktop for books, netflix, and youtube). Im eagerly awaiting more devices like this, and will consider buying this one. My only gripe is the physical keyboard. I can touch type korean on a full size keyboard but it would take time to get used to that with a physical thumb keyboard... The boox might still be king in this area.

While physical machines to make it happen might be way off, a VR based game just being able to move around freely in the open worlds would be crazy fun for some of them who may have not been able to move to 10, 20 years or more.

I keep on seeing people use the argument that you should know what you're buying if you are paying over $1,000. And that's fair. But the price is not the issue. It's the business practices. Remember this. Imagine if Amazon only allowed you to sell your products on their store. banned you if you used another ecommerce platform, and claimed that it was for privacy or ecosystem reasons. On the one hand, they are a company that doesn't legally have to let you use their platform, but when they make up most of the online shopping market, it would be hard to do it on your own. Yet Apple does this to apps that use third party payment systems, and not only will your app get banned, but you won't have the option to sideload/use your own platform on their devices, and most people don't bat an eye. These types of practices are the whole reason that monopoly laws exist.

I considered an Android phone ages ago, and didn't like the UI, so I have absolutely no idea what the experience is like trying to use some Apple devices with some non-Apple devices. Part of me says, "eh, what do you expect them to do? They're not running a charity." Another part of me remembers that we've built modern society on the backs of open protocols like TCP/IP and SMTP. Imagine if the early Internet pioneers had the mindset that they would rather license than give away, and better still, keep to themselves rather than license, if that was an option. It is crappy behavior, and it should stop. I hesitate to say it should be _law,_ but I do understand the motivation, and the argument has some merit. So here’s a hot take in the form of a question? How many platforms are hardware makers required to support? Is Apple required to support Apple Watch on Windows phone? Does this apply to software too? Are video games required to have Mac and Linux support? I don’t really see what the distinction in reasoning is between “Apple should support my Watch on Android because I have an Android and I want an Apple Watch” and “I have a Linux system and I want to play GTA so Rockstar needs to support me.” There has to be some balance here right? What is the justification for skewering Apple on development costs but not everyone else who makes anything? I just don’t see it as anything other than an unfair singling out without a proper universal first principles basis. Why is iOS not required to work on Samsung phones? I think it really comes down to what the boundaries of a product are, and I don’t see how the customer or the government gets to decide what that is. The manufacturer is the one making the product and they get to decide it, and it’s interoperability IMO. It comes down the manufacturer getting to make engineering tradeoffs, not the government. Like imagine if some years back Thunderbolt were basically outlawed because USB (3) C is more interoperable? Idk seems stupid. I want manufacturers to make the best tech they can.

When I signed up with Steam to sell my game there was limitations on how cheap you can sell it. You're also not allowed to simply pull a bunch of steam keys and sell it cheaper on other platforms. Humble is a special case included in exceptions. You can sell your game off steam too for less as long as you're not selling steam keys. Idk if this changed since 2017 or not but I'm fairly certain this was part of the contract I signed

I was the lead dev on a game that almost sold on steam. Internal issues killed the game, but we did go through Valve's requirements, and as far as I can tell, there were no real, hard limits on price. Steam keys were limited till a certain number of units were sold, but where they were distributed was not.

The difference between Valve and Apple is that Valve allows you to access their app/store however you want. All Apple have to do is make an application that allows you to update and use your products how you want on any device. It wouldn’t be difficult at all.

sorta related but only a bit: one of the merch questions asked Luke about dyslexia. Im left handed and ive never gotten left handed tools. for scissors i do have to get ambidextrous ones but for all other things i just learn to use the normal tools. and i dont move my mouse over to the other side of my keyboard either. games and things are designed for right handed people so its just been easier to use things that way and work through it. it does mean i tend to suck at FPS games because my right hand is just dumb but im not really into FPS games all that much anyway.
@3xceIIent
@3xceIIent 2 ай бұрын
I can't imagine honestly. As a right handed person I know how dumb my left hand is. But there is also basically nothing I have to try and use my left hand for so in the rare occasion I try it just doesn't function much. Perhaps having to try and adapt like this all your life might have gave you slightly more control over your right hand than I have of my left, but even still it doesn't sound fun.
@TNH91
@TNH91 2 ай бұрын
@@3xceIIent I know that some people actively train to become ambidextrous (I've done _some_ attempts at it myself, try eating with the fork and knife switching hands) so I'm sure I _could_ get to a point where I could use a mouse well with my left hand. It's just not something I'm used to. But for guitar most people do the strumming with their right/dominant hand and the dextrous work of pressing down on the correct frets with their left/non-dominant hand. That seems to indicate to me that it's mostly what we're used to that matters. But then again I have _no_ scientific knowledge on the topic and haven't looked into it beyond just lay person opinioning.

Sad part is, there is a way to update AirPods by plugging them in, but it’s through a specific Apple program. I work for an AASP, and we have software provided by Apple for just this. Updating firmware on AirPods and iPhones manually through recovery modes and such. The amount of hoops we have to go through when changing out even just a speaker or display is insane.

One thing that baffles me is how majority of apple device owners truly believe that apple devices not being interoperable with other devices like the rest of the market is a great thing and anything else is somehow impossible or will make the apple device user experience worse. It’s just silly. Apple can be competitive and have some objectively superior experiences WHILE still being interoperable at the basic level. My partner and I bought a HomePod mini for our Apple TV and to our surprise, we couldn’t set up a speaker (a speaker!) with the TV Box, it MUST be an iPhone. WHY!??!?! THAT’S DELIBERATELY DESIGNING A LIMITATION THAT SHOULDN’T EXIST. Same thing with my AirPods I bought after my Galaxy buds pro (first gen) went missing and I thought ‘huh, let me try the AirPods Pro, they could be cool’ only to find out I couldn’t update the buds or even connect them to my Apple ID in any way without getting the tablet or phone. Bruh, come on, these are Bluetooth earbuds ffs 🙄 I like their experiences like any other company, but that behaviour irks the hell out of me and people that defend it irritate me.

Yeah can back up what Linus is saying about Japan as I currently live in Tokyo and have lived here since 2015. For one, you don't go to themed anything. They are junk. Also the food scene here is massively overrated. You need to hunt to find anything good and the range is limited. But people argue very passionately about the food being excellent... i don't get it. And yeah my tiny apartment has zero space, that is why we all buy Muji storage boxes and racks. I am currently playing house tetris trying to make a film studio in my apartment. And note everyone has a bag... That is where your trash goes. What is great about Japan is the ability to go anywhere without a car and how safe it is. Apart from that though...

If you like sea food apparently the seafood in Japan is very good so says my wife, I however do not like really seafood generally. I survived on Ramen and Tonkatsu (I think thats how its spelled, some kind of battered fried pork with some veggies) and where available chicken sushi which was all decent but I would rather be at home eating fish, chips, burgers and pizza myself.
