I want to wish you luck with your ankle surgery! I had to have ankle surgery in 2016 and could not put any weight on it for about 8 weeks. My best advice is to keep it elevated whenever you can. That helps with swelling and it also helps with pain. If you let it hang down too long it will start throbbing. The scooter is a fabulous tool! Just take your time and don't get in too big of a hurry. Take it from me, if you happen to tip it over, it's harder to get up off the floor with only one good ankle. LOL! Glad you’re in such a good place preop. Preparation and confidence in your medical team and yourself for recovery means the best result. I had flatfoot reconstruction about 10 years ago. I found healthboards.com to be a great resource. To read about tips or connect with people having similar surgeries. I loved the knee walker!! One thing I found very useful was a portable commode at my bedside for the first week or more. That way u don’t have to go far. Oh and get multiple gel packs to freeze so u always have some. Ice is your friend.

Having a few surgeries in the past, I just tried to focus on the things that I wanted to accomplish in the future, long after surgery. It is just something I did that worked for me. God bless you.

Most orthopedic post op patients are given a Cyrocuff its a cooler with attachments to a cuff like a foot wrap,knee wrap or shoulder pack that you use..you basically use the cold water in the cooler and fill the pack...then you drain the warm water back into the cooler and refill pack with cold water again from the cooler as often as directed from the physician..they are nice..and didnt see any secret emogi..but I made it to the end😁💙

I used this after a rotator cuff surgery, it was way better than ice packs! I hope she was able to get one.

Sounds like you’re essentially doing an AIP diet? Just a recommendation - coming off all those foods can feel pretty rough at first, so you might try starting to eat that way a week or two before surgery so you’re not dealing with sugar withdrawals at the same time as surgery recovery. Good luck!

I recommend this as well! After cutting out sugar and gluten especially. You might experience headaches, definitely fatigue and irritability. It can take sometime to readjust but so worth it! You got this :)

I hope surgery goes well. I understand the stress... I have chronic kneecap dislocation and after years of dealing with it I’m looking into knee replacement. I’m scared and worried but it’s the next step and I know it will help. My kneecap dislocated the other day and I can barely walk and I’m using a cane to get around. Shaylee, I had a majorly broken ankle in 1988 and I couldn't put weight on my leg for 10-11 months. They didn't have the knee scooters then! One tip I can give you for early on is that your ankle will HURT when it's not propped up. It's like all the blood goes down there and makes it swell more. If you're sitting in the bathroom for more than a couple of minutes, you'll want something to prop up your leg on. The scooter might work, but practice ahead of time, so you can have something ready that's the right height. You might want to get a raised toilet seat since it's harder to get up and down when you can only bear weight on one leg. They're not expensive and you can get them on Amazon. Make sure not to over-ice. Only 20 minutes at a time, or you can get frostbite. And make sure to keep up with your pain meds the first 2-3 days (or however long it takes for the pain to ease up some). Don't try to tough it out - if you get behind on your pain meds, they don't work as well. I had major shoulder surgery in January, so I have recent experience with orthopedic surgery!! I will be praying for you!!

Amen! I had ligament surgery on my ankle in early 2005 because I’d sprained it so many times over the years, it was stretched to the point of total instability. He had to basically fold it up into a Z and stitch it together to tighten it back up. He told my hubby and I that when he was “scoring” it for looseness before the surgery, he really wanted to rate it higher than the standardized scale, but he couldn’t because he was one of the orthopedists that had written it! I think it’s 0-4, 0 being the best and 4 being “holy crap, that joint is way too loose and unstable”. So in my chart, he officially recorded 4+. He said he needed to really document how floppy my joint was and he knew his colleagues would definitely understand the sentiment behind it. Shaylee, we’re not joking about the pain med stuff in the first few days. Take them! If you’re ready to wean around Day 4, fine, but use them in the first days after. You’ll need them to sleep and even just resting on the couch. Ice is best for only the first 48 or so. Then you want blood going to the surgery site, taking away waste like the pooled blood in the tissues that are the bruises. Going to the bathroom will be a big challenge. It’s not the sitting down, it’s the getting up using only your good leg. Trust us, there’s no shame in calling your husband to help you stand back up. And rest your good hip. It’s going to be the taking the load. Perhaps not as much with the scooter, but you’ll definitely be favoring one over the other.

Hey girl, I have a broken foot right now and love my shower chair. As you said it’s definitely better than trying to balance on 1 foot and risk slipping and hurting yourself. But I had foot surgery a couple years ago and was unable to get the incision wet at all. So I found baby wipes very helpful in keeping area of foot clean. (Staying clear of incision) Otherwise, I would basically lean over the bathtub and use a dish tub in my bath tub and use the shower head extension hose to get myself clean. That way I could keep my foot outside the bathtub. I would basically scrub up from the filled dish tub and wash hair with extension hose. It was not easy! I wanted to let you know this, as I’m sure you’ll have to keep your incision dry for about 4 weeks after surgery, if it is truly foot surgery. If it’s ankle, you may only need to keep dry for a couple days. Hope your surgery goes great and you heal up quickly! 🙏🏻

I had ankle fusion it took two years to heal properly but I am older than you. I wouldn’t say it is perfect now, it was a big deal I needed help, I had to inject myself with clot busting stuff because not being weight bearing mobile, but I would not go back to how it was. Hope not tmi for you. Just be patient and have positive thoughts. I had a knee walker they are the best.

I've been thinking about you this week knowing your surgery is coming up! I was just going to suggest a grabber to you today. I had a dollar store one which was just enough to pick up clothes off the floor! I got a much nicer one for my daughter's hip surgery that she never used! I will be praying for you and thinking of you Wednesday. I actually have a PT evaluation at 8am and am finally out of the boot more than in it! Be a good girl and follow doctor's orders and stay off the stupid thing and try not to fall and put weight on it like I may have done! I assume you also have crutches? If not, definitely get some because sometimes I couldn't use my scooter. Also I kept my crutches upstairs while I was in bed and my scooter was at the bottom of the stairs, unless I had to clean my room or bathroom upstairs. Also put a chair in front of your washer and dryer so you can sit and do laundry after hubby carries it for you! I didn't want my husband ruining our clothes while I was recovering 😂
