Sorry for your loss Steven. You are not alone! To me birds are messengers from heaven. Reminds me of a relative who experienced a similar situation. Before her husband died he told her that he does not believe in an afterlife, reincarnation and in his words "all that bullshit". He said if there is and I am wrong I'll let you know.... The day after he had passed a huge black bird she had never seen before appeared on her terrace fixating her with piercing eyes. She stood up walking towards the bird to have a closer look. Then it spread its wings to circle couple of times around her, even later sat at her feet looking staight into her eyes totally unfazed and calm. She started to cry, again the bird circled around close to her and finally left. It was never seen again.

Steven, My husband also had a sponsor, Ossie L. , that was his anchor in his recovery... he was almost a second father & did more to help him recover than his own father could have., It was devastating fpr my husband, when he passed . He was the one whose guidance made it possible for us to have a marriage of 38 years and 2 children because the relationship had nearly run its course when My husband went into rehab. I agreed to stay thru his treatment & although it was a hard road, I am glad that I stayed & we repaired the relationship to where it was better than before his illness took over. All thanks to Ossie's guidance & support. I understand how you are feeling & I validate every tear. Stay strong.
