I was homeless during my junior year of college. I crashed on my friend's floor and paid her $300 a month. Thankfully I didn't quite college. it's been 7 years since, and I now own two houses, and one of them is bringing passive income with a great tenant managed by a company while I work full time as a lab scientist. @@candirockstar135 It really depends on where you live. Around here $2000-2500 is not a particularly tight budget for a single person. So I worked. Always. And when I didn't work I was still there, just hanging out trying to pick up shifts, trying to get ahead, willing to do anything and everything, and slept for bits in the store room when I could get away with it and secretly ate the scraps other people left behind just to save money. Then I found a buddy to share an appartment with, got my act together, and got a roof over my head.

I gave my 30 days notice on Oct. 2018. I kept my car, place my things in storage and currently coach surfing thanks to good friends. I wouldn’t call that homeless, just improvising. I got tired of paying high rent in So Cali and commuting for work. I cut $1500 from my expense. It feels good and I’m happy. Again, this is by choice. Im great full I still have the resource to rent if I decide to do so. Being blessed with 2-jobs, my focus is to pay off my 50k debt in the next 2 years. Please pray for me that I achieve my goal. Thanks!

I actually think that Josh made the right choice cos without reliable transport it is almost impossible to get a job. He needs more money, get into a motel cos there's free parking and shower. If you’re ever homeless, don’t feel like you have to be. If you don’t have options to live with your family, go to a shelter, not all shelters are all bad, if you need to bathe enroll in a cheap gym if you can like planet fitness and take showers there, if that’s not an option, of course public bathrooms. Enroll in food stamps immediately if you can, go to food drives, they give out food for free. There are tons of resources out here that can help you get back together such as the the workforce or like Dave Ramsey said start selling services like being a lawnmower person. Also if you are homeless, there’s nothing wrong with moving to a different state to find better access to jobs and resources.

Expensive cities should do like the Japanese do, and rent out "sleep pods." Some cities even have mini apartments smaller than a bedroom, with a shared bathroom down the hall. At least it keeps you safe and off the street. In the U.S. there are businesses that if you register with them, you can park in driveways, parking lots, and any place that is also registered with them, for a few dollars a night. One of these is called Just Park. There are others. It's a win-win, if zoning permits it. Private home owners can participate too. Much safer.

Josh wear and tear amounts to a negligible amount if you’re using minimal car for the job. Example: I drive Uber and Lyft nights and weekends. Have been for the last three years and I plan to do it for the next 4 or 5 years too. I drive around 30 hours a week on top of my 50 hour weekday job. I drive about 30,000 miles a years. So keeping it well maintained, I’ll be able to get 200,000 miles in 6-7 years. I paid $16k for the car brand new. By the time I get rid of it at 200,000 miles, it’ll practically be worthless. But I make about $35,000 extra per year doing this. Gas comes out to only about 15% of that and maintenance is only a few hundred dollars a year usually. Taxes are less than $1,000 for the whole years since almost all of that money is written off as a mileage deduction. So that’s still over $30,000 after expenses. So after 7 years I’ll have spent $16k on a car, drove it into the ground, and made over $200,000 with it. So now you see the wear and tear argument is kinda silly. Even if you were driving an expensive car it would still be worth it.

You can't go from sleeping in your car to a good job, nobody will hire you. I don't think that Dave realizes what it's like to be in that situation. The quality of room mates a homeless person can get means that they will be more trouble then they are worth. The last thing this guy needs is to be room mates with junkies and mentally ill people which is what he will get. Going through something like that is really upsetting and it makes it really hard to make a good first impression and the spiral continues down. I've been in that situation and like many other things in life you can't know what it does to you unless you have experienced it. Dave knows what a bankruptcy does and finding yourself in this man's situation does many of the same things.

Drogo has a point: appearance counts in many job interviews. Maybe not pizza delivery but upscale cafe? They want cleancut, freshly showered, clean hands and trimmed nails, nice pants and starched shirt, newish shoes - no scuffs. No taped glasses. No missing teeth or discolored teeth. British Columbia represent! Wishing you the best Josh, it’s not easy with the cost of living and low vacancy rate in Victoria. Rent a room from a college student and pile up cash. Then start thinking about and planning for the future

Yeah I always wonder about how much pizza delivery drivers make. But think 30 days of work x $70-$100 is about $2000-3000 a month so it could be possible

its seasonal summers are good, winter is ok if you dont live in snowy places. but money wise youd make 80-100 in tips a night 12 hr work days. my checks were about 425 ( you dont full 7.25 when your out of the store on delivery). also a big factor is how much delivery fee cost. we went from 2.50 to 3.50 and people stopped tipping, or bought more to round it the next big bill. lets say it cost 16.75 at 2.50 at 3.50 it cost 17.89 people would add drinks to make it 20.05 when normally they would give you the 20 and let you keep the change.ill say you can range from 1500-1800 a month.

I seen a few say be xyz like a trucker. The problem with this is it cost money for the training and what not. I think he really needs to aim towards the military since they will pay for the training, give him housing, and so on. If he can't do that for whatever reason, then I think he is mostly out of luck.

Actually daves baby steps will go a long way to prevent this kinda thing a 6 month emergency fund will do wonders, or even the baby emergency fund wouldve been enough to cover his insurance deductible without missing a beat. So part of the problem is this man is new to the DR plan

The Bible makes clear there will always be poor and poverty. Before Eruopean occupation of the Jewish society under Mosaic Law, the society cared for its people. But we can see by Jesus's arrival that society began to ignore poor and sick and, worse, blame them. No doubt that is how western Christians these days treat the poor. And we see Dave take a shot at this homeless man's "decisions" to sell his program. The guy needs a roof over him, not a lecture from a millionaire!

Ya know. Most of the cities on Vancouver Island and full of retired folks who have moved there from colder parts of Canada. Visit EI and see what programs they have which educate you in nursing assistant, kitchen staff, orderly and maintenance, for example. They cover most of your costs, ie: tuition, room rent, etc. You could have a decent job in 3-4 months.

23 years old, possibly came from a dysfunctional family, working 2 restaurant server jobs, living in his car and possible mental health issues (depression? Hard to tell)... heartbreaking situation. He needs money now and to provide some sort of service(s) to get out of his situation. Dave's advice of "Rich people are afraid of leaves" is a good starting point. Since he has restaurant experience and a car delivering pizzas can be done at night. When he has enough money he should get a roommate or two or rent a room from someone and learn in demand skills either by taking classes at a community college when he's not working, providing services so roll that experience into a stable employment/ livable salary and hopefully never be in this situation again. Though he should look at a lower COL area beside Vancouver since rent is very expensive there.

People who have never been homeless like to assume homeless people have a pseudo health problem like a mental illness. I can assure you that as a disabled working homeless wife with a husband that works three jobs and we are desperately trying to move out of my abusive parents unfinished concrete basement (where we are not allowed to use their bathrooms and instead have to leave to drive to the nearest recreation center to bathe on limited hours, where we don’t have access to use their kitchen or cook properly, have been abused, mocked, and threatened with the police by my own parents because they don’t approve of my hardworking husband) - we are still in massive medical debt due to non-alcoholic kidney and liver disease and to the hygiene problems caused by my parents refusal to let us bathe, even though we pay rent as does my younger brother, and he is permitted to use their bathrooms) - I have had more rich people assume and look down on us than I can count. The worst are the doctors, who condescendingly talk down to you and lecture you about what you already try to do and know you need to do and can’t often do. Those Rec centers cost money to enter - $50 dollars and they are on a limited schedule. If my husband has to clean up to go to his second or third job, and the Rec center closes? Guess what? We’ve been reduced to bathing outdoors naked sometimes in the cold. We also have been reduced to peeing and shutting in a bucket because you can’t get in the Rec center after hours. I never ever thought I would be reduced to this. I try to keep clean. I try to dress like I’m not homeless. I’ve even had people tell me how come I don’t look homeless. Yet these self righteous rich people look down on us as if we are dirt. I forgive them, and I warn them to beware unless God puts them in the same circumstances. It can happen to anyone and I assure you, you wouldn’t care for when others to assume you have a pseudomedical condition either. Please educate yourself.

Currently watching because I may be homeless… choosing the wrong partner and things aren’t working out and my mom is using what was supposed to be my room as a storage room because the new house she bought is smaller than she had suspected. I feel so stuck because all my plans revolved around me moving back home. I had a friend for a fallback but their lease doesn’t end til March 2025
