@@nellefindlay Nelle, back in the mid 70's I went to college, yeah I'm old 69 actually. I went as a business major and the college at the time had their semesters broken into quarters. So you went to classes 3/4 of the year and then did what was termed a co-op for 1/4 of the year. The idea behind this is that you would work in your field of study for that 1/4 and gain experience in that field. When it was my turn to go work the college didn't have any placements in business. So they asked if I would be willing to take a placement in an education program that no one had taken, the reason for this was to keep the position open and the college wouldn't lose it as a work study. I would be paid so I agreed to interview for it. Turns out it was a program funded by a university to give student teachers a place to get experience. What I didn't know was that it was for autistic young adults that had no social skills at all and the idea was to try to raise they're skill level to a point where they could possibly interact with others. This was completely foreign to me but I was offered the job and took it. I was in a world that I had never experienced, the students were self abusive, aggressive towards other students and staff, non verbal and needed assistance with all phases of every day life. I questioned my judgment the first week there because I was not use to this kind of thing. I'm going to shorten this and jump ahead. I completed my semester, the staff was excellent and we became very close because we needed each other for our students and our own safety. It was sad to leave and return to school and when my next co-op came around the college asked if I would go back and do it again for the same reasons....I said yes. And when I graduated I went back to work there until the program was shut down due to the lack of student teachers the university had in its program. It was a amazing experience and I actually met the woman who I would marry who had been a student teacher at the same time I was there. I hope I didn't bore you with the story, I've actually been a sub of yours for years. Hope you're doing great!!
