I'm Canadian and never thought eating alone was weird in any way until my Irish coworker told me she feels sorry for people when she sees them eating alone in restaurants. Not that it changed how I act though. If other people think I am sad or weird for eating alone, that's their problem.

I'm Canadian too, and feel the same way - I went to Korea on my own for a couple of weeks about 5 years ago and at a restaurant, I got told how weird and pitiful it was that I sat and ate alone. But I myself didn't feel that way. I thought I was being perfectly normal, bc even though I'm married and have 2 kids, we do our own thing too. We're more than just someone's mum/wife/sister/daughter/etc. (and same for guys!) I go on my own to places, my husband does too. Or well, we *did*, until the pandemic turned everything upside down. But I'm sure you know what I mean. 😁

Canadians are lonely souls with no culture. Lack of family bonds Respect to older age parents Lack of life! Just coz you go to Cuba doesn't mean you have a high life.
@devilsoffspring55193 жыл бұрын
Some Canadians are extremely stuck up about that. If you don't mind doing something by yourself then who cares? It's nobody else's business. Eat your food, watch your movie, get into your hobby, whatever you like. A lot of Canadians are paranoid about being perceived as unpopular, but it's just immaturity. It isn't always young ones either!

As someone who is Asian but grew up my entire life in Canada, I can still relate to the expressiveness differences. My family are not very expressive and show their love and care in other ways instead of through physical or verbal expressions. It does get really really annoying when people assume something is wrong when I'm not literally grinning or squealing and jumping for joy.

I am an Indian, you Canadians have a great country but living in Canada is making me realise that how much Middle East and Asia in general has better climate . I sometimes think that it’s something that every first world country will suffer from so once your country develops into a first world country the loneliness will follow . I am neither pro nor against immigration but it leads to a segregation problem as well . Asians end up gaining a lot but at the end loneliness gets on them . I was pro weed as well but now I can see it’s a problem as well . But the beauty is amazing but the weather is horrible. This is where Asia wins , the mere diversity is breathtaking. Pros : 1. Beautiful in summers. (We Indians can learn a lot about preserving nature from them ). 2. Can meet very diverse people (I met Japanese , Turkish , phillipines , pakistanis, native Canadians etc) 3. Great cycling trails in Vancouver 4. A job in your field can be rewarding (although taxes can kill you) 5. Taxes pay for Medicare (it’s both a pro and con) Cons : 1. Climate can really make you depressed . 2. A little superficial . 3. I guess isolation has made people a certain way due to extreme cold (being locked inside in winters). 4. Homesickness can get on your nerves . 5. Dating and marriage mostly results in failures (again I think a consequence of a developed country).

Canada is good at raising immigrants expectations. They lure immigrants into the country, have them spend their money earned in their home countries and leave Canada when they realize it's a dead end. That's how their economy works)). I spent five and half years in Toronto. It was amazing learning experience after all but can relate to your points. Loneliness, being far away from family (I am European) and cultural shock made horrible mix. Toronto is of course very multicultural but I personally felt lost in such mixture of cultures and races. I was looking for company for people culturally similar to me and the same appeared to dating simply because I felt more confident in their company. I always felt people considered mu behaviour bad and racist only because I preferred company of other Europeans. Maybe it was just wrong impression, but I felt pressure of inter racial dating which I didn't want to do. All of this plus of course networking crucial to get a job made me relocate to Switzerland where I feel more like home even though the language barrier exists. In general I think both Canada and Switzerland are great countries to live but maybe for different people as countries are different when it comes to culture etc. Canada is great start to learn expat life but each of us need to decide if want to stay in our first country of choice. While being in Canada, I realised I was too conservative for Canada, and Toronto, especially whereas where I am now I am more middle of the road and even slightly liberal.

I think it's normal to feel more confortable with people with a similar cultural background as you. There's less of an effort to understand certain points of view on different topics and that helps the conversation to flow and avoids awkward moments (as you understand the intricacies of the other person's discourse and where they're coming from). I say this because I've met people in hostels from all over the world and I'm aware the cultural barrier can exist. I'm actually currently living in Switzerland and will move to Toronto very soon :)
