I don't know why but this bit has always been *incredibly* hilarious to me. Maybe it's Marge's unconsidered "sure", maybe it's the '70s sci-fi tv show sound effects, I don't know, but it slays me.

Part of what I think made classic Simpsons so brilliant is that scenes like this really played to the popular culture and memories of people who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s, watching shows like the Six Million Dollar Man. Those of us who were a little younger when we watched the Simpsons in the 1990s could perhaps not immediately relate to it but we could ask our parents, who definitely did. Once the late '90s and early 2000s rolled around, it became harder to do so, not least because, whether the show's creators wanted to or not, Homer and Marge were also aging. Perhaps if they really "aged" in the show, the show would be able to retain something of its luster, but it became increasingly harder once the '60s and '70s faded away and you had to now make references to current-day events and figures to keep the show going. That's why I think the Simpsons is the quintessential show of 1990s American culture.

Man, Simpsons is pure gold. I have seen so many references to my own malfunctioning family that I couldn’t list them all. But let’s just state the most obvious one: Bart is clearly a kid with no discipline or special talent whatsoever, but his mother dreams of him becoming a Harvard graduate, probably a projection of her own failures. Well I had this aunt many years ago who dreamed of her son (my cousin) becoming a doctor when she was the one who had dropped university and the guy clearly hadn’t any interest in books, studying or the like. Marge’s dream of eloping with a movie star is also a clear denial of how badly her partner choices went. I mean she loves Homer but can’t accept his inability to adjust to responsibilities in life. My cousin today reminds me a lot of Homer Simpson.
