Hey really nice to see some progress in the emulation community on Bloodborne ! Just some quick advice regarding the normal modifications, as a senior environment artist I would suggest to cjeck that the normal map is not based on the actual normal of the vertices before trying to smooth them differently. Because on the 3D model without the normal map it may look better but as the normal map could have been baked on the actual normal directions you will break the look of the asset and make them look worth. I get the appealling of doing that on the lowpoly asset but sometimes hard edges are way better looking with the normal maps than is the asset would have been smooth :)

Abyss1ne kinda did his BB mod months ago. He's done an overhaul and imported the lighting engine used in DS3. I think he just did it while working on fixing DS3 for the hell of it. Currently, he's just restoring DS3 back to the alpha build. BB itself had so much of it changed during development that a lot of it wasn't updated in the final game. A ton of distant models are from alpha and don't match the final in any way. The path from Central Yharnam to Yahar'Gur for example is completely different from certain areas. The entire map placements are a mess as well because some were rotated or moved entirely somewhere else in order to fit within the space, but at a distance it makes zero sense.

after seeing the bricks and corners etc being modeled andactual geometry, it makes more sense now knowing the alleged rumor that the FS team split into two parts after DS1 to work on 2 different games which were DS2 and Project Beast (later Bloodborne) supposedly. maybe they took what worked for DS1 and went bonkers with the modeling for BB while the other portion of FS strayed from the path for DS2. It would also make sense considering how long it took production on PB - it released in 2015 and they were, supposedly, working on both DS2 and that within a year of release of DS1 which came out in 2011 :) not verified on any of this info, but I have heard it regurgitated a lot, and it would be neat to think of this should it be true! anyway, best of luck my friend, you and the community are doing something inspiring here

I've always thought that Bloodborne looks way better than DS3 most of the time. There's an absurd amount of geometry and it seems like they used the game's darkness to their advantage by just... not caring about shadows usually. It's either nigttime or overcast when there wouldn't be many anyways. (Seems like they didn't upgrade the lighting much for DS3 though, it's SO flat.) Your raw appreciation of the stuff we literally walk over with our characters is great to witness, as always. Extra endearing cuz it's BB we're talking here. Also thanks for mentioning DS3 was a downgrade from BB. I think it's obvious by just playing both games, but I've seen people insinuate that BB is just hiding itself under a saturation of effects like chromatic aberration and whatnot. I still find that, when it comes to model viewing as seen in some channels on YT, BB's textures in particular are just on a category of their own. I actually find it bizarre how something like animal/beast fur can look so much flatter in DS3 and ER compared to BB. I find stuff like the abhorrent beast model to look really impressive.

Recently broke out my 2nd PS5 to play Bloodborne at 120fps about a month ago. I sold the PS5 I was actually using to a friend. Wasn't sure I'd play all the way through, but I hadn't played all the way through since it came out, and I hadn't played the DLC. I wanted to at least see what it's like before I updated my PS5 to get back to current games I've been playing. Overall, 120fps makes it feel so good, you can't help but finish your playthrough. It lives up to the excitement people have around the idea of it. It makes everything feel snappy and combat easier to read and react to in general. I know I've gotten better at these games since Bloodborne came out, but 120fps 100% made me feel better at the game. Frame dips were very minor (I also use VRR). Beat everything except Orphan of Kos because I wasn't in the mood for grinding it out, but I did almost beat him! Wouldn't even want to try him at 30fps lol. Didn't do Gehrman or Moon Presence either (I'll save that for the inevitable remaster(?)). Also got a glitch that made me invincible in Cainhurst, another place I never went to. Honestly didn't mind the glitch as it let me just enjoy the environment and atmosphere :P I wouldn't have wanted to grind that boss anyway X) I think anyone who really wants to try BB at a higher fps would not be disappointed when they finally have the opportunity to try it. I did end up updating my console, but only because I play new stuff on PS5, single and multiplayer.

@fromsoftserve This is really really cool Truly!!!! BUTTTTT it does show how big a hole FirmSoft dug them selves in, with all the models with such high fidelitey that the game could run. (especially early PS4s) With knowing how much musical chairs of bosses and complete map progression overhauls that were done right before the release. This video really explains a lot for me lol! Like for example the part where Gascoigne goes and connects to the church of Oden, the top part where its really flat with no brick compared to the boss arena. To me at least that shows the rushed nature of the original route to cathedral ward being through the big bridge, then quickly changing to father Gascoigne bc the load times weren't fast enough. So that's the part of the map that was put together to make up for that error I think that mapping technique coulda been helped reach what they wanted to do in then first place. Culling the brick Geo and making it just overall LOD lower. I think they did realize this and with DS3 they were able to adjust the amount of effort put into the locations and the elements inside the map. Not because they couldn't but bc they didn't want to, but have to deal with another bloodborne Yharnahm problem lol. :) Again bro I love this video so much being able to fly in the map editor is so cool and the ability to hopefully mod a BB PC port would be so amazing with your mod! cant wait to see what you're able to make !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Vertices are cheaper than POM in most cases. They were absolutely right to add the additional geometry, and couldn't have passed it off with a normal map as the detail is there to break up silhouettes and tiling, both of which would've been unavoidable with texturing only. Feel free to profile the alternatives, but I guarantee you the geo was the cheapest way forward, especially pre-batching where they could cull individual patches of brick scatter etc

"It does not get ingame" - well, here we are!
@TuRmIx964 ай бұрын
The reason they barely used POM is because it’s kinda expensive. And when I say kinda I mean it will tank the performance easily. Especially in 2014, the PS4s GPU equivalent is like a GTX 760, not much of a beast. It’s even expensive today and should be used with care. Rendering polygons are cheap, you can easily cull them, make LODs and most importantly instance them.

Semi-unrelated but why hasn't anyone brought up "porting" Bloodborne or any other souls game into the Elden Ring engine? Its obviously not as simple as a copy-paste but I also can't imagine it being crazy difficult. It would take a lot of time but Bloodborne running in the Elden Ring engine sounds a lot more appealing than emulating the PS4 version An example of this concept is "A Tale of Two Wastelands" which is a Fallout 3 / New Vegas mod requiring you to own both games, porting Fallout 3 into the New Vegas engine, allowing you to play both games seamlessly even with the same character / save on one engine. Porting any Souls-Borne game could either go the route of making it a "DLC" and using the same character like how Fallout does it or removing Elden Ring entirely and using it for just the engine upgrade alone

There is a lot of cross compatibility with the from soft games since they use the same iterated engine. What about loading the locations and enemies in another, PC supported game such ER or DS3. I am so surprised nobody has done it or is working on it. I actually tried making this DS3 mod, managed to replaced vordt with phase one Gascoigne and some of the basic hollows in Undead Settlement with yharnam locals and werewolves, it worked but didn't have the time or patience to see it through past the technical issues. I suppose there are some legal aspects to be wary of remaking the game without Sony. But I dream of a waygate sitting out there in the lands between or a bonfire in Lothric that warps you to Yharnam or Lordran and you can play Bloodborne faithfully ported or DS1 faithfully updated. I have a PS4 and Bloodborne, but there's no reason it shouldn't be on PC at this point.

If Bloodborne got a minimal PC port, how difficult would it be to port your mod?

very cool and if nothing else I hope that the map could be ported to say DS3 so you could just walk around the locations with proper pc hardware.

Wouldn't it be possible to port the maps and assets from bloodborne into ds3 essentially making a bloodborne pc port in a way

The reason they use actual modelled geometry instead of just normal maps or POM is because it breaks the silhouette, it's all well and good to have a brick wall with a normal map, but the silhouette is always just flat, with acctually modellled bricks on the edges it breaks up that silhouette.

Can you do a deep dive video on the algorithms used for the dynamically generated chalice dungeons? We know some are fixed but some (i think they are called root chalice dungeons or something?) are generated dynamically. Would be interested to see what algo is used for generation. I assume some sort of A* ?

Great insights. Thank you for flying around and commentating on various things, almost felt like a developer commentary from some guy working in fromsoft

FromSoft might have had a very good reason to prefer geometry over textures. You can see this same strategy in Valve games like Left 4 dead- where there are no normal maps at all there are instead surprisingly rounded edges or supporting geometry. Vertices are generally less expensive to render than textures and the brick facade models are not high poly.

so uh, what's the point of like resmoothing the normals? and wouldn't that mess with the baked normals already in place on the assets?

You need to steal Odeon Chapel and paste it in Majula or something. 😂 I got your DS1:ReRe but haven’t checked it out just yet. I just platinum’d DS:R a couple months ago, but I’m gonna get back to it soon. Thanks for what you do. Looking forward to finally getting BB on PC.

I’m curious how you upscale the textures? And is there a set resolution you try to keep them at? I remember in previous videos for your other mods, you said that you had textures that were way too big and needlessly large and you reduced them
