I lived alone in the woods for five years until I decided to return to civilization (big mistake) seven years ago. There are four things I'd recommend you do right off the bat: 1.) As other people here have suggested, get a couple of dogs. Not only are they great companions but they're the best early warning system you could have regarding the presence of wild animals and people. 2.) Get armed. I had never owned a gun before I lived in the woods alone, but when I woke one morning not long after I moved into my cabin to find a black bear literally staring at me through my bedroom window licking the glass I decided to arm up. Most encounters I had with both wild animals and the occasional stranger were uneventful and innocuous. However, there will be exceptions. You can count on it. It's always best to be prepared. 3.) Stock up on at least a month's worth (preferably two) of food and water. If you live in a cold weather state and intend to reside in your cabin through the winter, you might end up snowed in for days or even weeks at a time depending on how far off the beaten path you are. Which leads to #4. 4.) Get to know your neighbors and local county sheriff. I moved to an isolated spot to be alone. I'm guessing you did too. However, there are times when you may need the help of other people. In case of an emergency, especially one that results in you being incapacitated somehow, your neighbors performing periodic welfare checks on you may be the only thing that prevents you from dying a long, slow, agonizing death all alone in the woods. Regular check ins with your local sheriff will help keep you up to speed on anything unusual that may be happening in your area. My local sheriff would also call me after bad storms to see if I was okay. The more people you have looking out for you the better. Good luck.

The following probably doesn't matter much to you right now, but I do have some potentially exciting news too (pregnancy update): Shortly after you last heard from me, I noticed what appeared to be a developing "baby bump"! My joy and elation were comparable to what I'm feeling from you in this video...I immediately decided to get into my best possible physical shape, to make for an easier birthing experience! I loved living in the woods alone. Yes, you need dogs. Don't compost in the open. It will attract rats, raccoons and bears etc... When I lived in the woods (for 18 years) in the winter, when I couldn't get to the store, I would feed my dogs oatmeal with table scraps. Burn everything paper that burns and recycle as much as possible. Keep more firewood than you think that you need. Pinecones make great fire starter.

Insulate everything, most importantly the roof. With a wood stove, the intense heat will go up to the roof deck and react with the cold of the actual roof and cause nasty condensation. That can cause mold. Just remember this, if there are no leaks or signs of mold now, and you start to add insulation where it wasn't before, be extremely cautious and make sure that there is proper ventilation on the back, outer wall side, of the insulation. Same for the roof. Research insulation roof batten and how to stop condensation / mold. Trust me. And good luck! Looks amazing

don't give up and keep looking. Heck look in every state if you have to and consider the natural risks ---i.e. Tornadoes, earthquakes, etc. In the end we got 6.88 acres up against 200 acres of state forest, with a log cabin for a grand total of $74,000.00, and we are paying roughly $480.00 a month in mortgage. We lived on the east coast, said 'the hell with it', and left with literally our last paycheck and the clothes on our back. We liquidated everything we had ( except of course family value stuff). If we can do it anyone can. I know everyone says that but east coast living had us literally 1 foot in the gutter, that's how bottom of the barrel we were.

It felt isolating and a bit lonely at first but SO worth the immense self-growth. It’s much easier to find creativity and to make films, feel spiritually in connection when you’re surrounded by woods and trees ✨ And yes!! The cost of living is so much better in nature! I was paying 800 euros for my 40 square meter apartment, now I have a nearly 200 square meter house for the same price. I think that the 'first' house without the water is a better place to set up your long term living. It's cleaner, in better shape, and doesn't have the sloping foundation. You're going to gut the kitchen anyway, so just take all of the appliances out and move them over to the smaller place. Then you can tear out the kitchen and the living area in the 'second' cabin and use it as a shop. Don't worry about the current capacity of the electrical. Normal power tools will be fine.
@aubieal08784 жыл бұрын
Sarah E.R.D then the electrical and getting water run to the cabin needs to be priority 1, moving appliances over, and leaving space for washer/dryer. Then start big cabin renovation. You can always move to the big cabin and make the smaller #2 cabin your workshop when you see them both completed.

The only advice I can offer comes from an experience from when I was a child. Even if you love nature surrounding your cottages, you might want to take the bigger trees down so they don't blow down during a storm and crush your home. That's all I can offer because this is your place. Plan, budget for taxes and have a bit of happiness that this place is now yours. As to the rear where the kitchen is sloped, check for rot. If its not rotten, the ground might have gotten soggy, and the blocks have sunken into the ground. Use a hydraulic bottle jack, one larger then you think you need, and have experienced help. You never know what can happen, so please don't do it alone. Edit - Wow. You took that bee out of there like no woman I've known before. You are no shrinking violet. You'll be fine. We outgrow people, places, jobs, situations. We are allowed to change. V life isn’t a religion with hard and fast rules one must adhere to. Van life is about finding what makes your soul happy, in whatever facet that may present itself. We all have holes. We all fill those holes with things, pets, activities, hopes, dreams. Life isn’t always easy or happy but doing this makes it livable. Let someone else do what they need to feel happy.

@@ErehErehErin I have had panic attacks and I found taking magnesium (Mg) citrate powder REALLY REALLY helps. I add a teaspoon of it in my 20 ounce water bottle in the morning and I have another bottle about an hour before bed. I add a half packet of Crystal Light To-Go lemonade flavoring for flavor. It calms my nerves so I can sleep. PLEASE try it. You can get it from Walmart, Spring Valley brand is just as good and half the price as the name brand CALM. Magnesium is one of the essential minerals (along with calcium, potassium and sodium) but most people are deficient in it due to our poor , nutrient deficient soils where our food is grown nowadays. Also, magnesium is the "calming mineral" and acts on the brain to keep you from being stressed. It is stored in your bones but the more stress you have, the more it gets depleted and the more you feel anxious. You need to supplement Mg even if you are taking Paxil or something for Panic Disorder. Please give it a try. It changed my life and I never let a day go by without having my "mineral water". :-)

I just saw the video. You're living the dream. Congrats! This is an awesome place and you make me think even more about that kind of life that I always thought about. Who knows! Maybe someday. Enjoy and be safe 🐾👣🌲🌿🍀🌳🏕🏞

You should get a composting toilet. When its snowing and wild animals out there you won't want to be trekking out there to pee.

Yep, I was gonna suggest this no one needs to find that a bear beat you to the loo 😳🐻.... so worth the time and investment and they seem to have great user reviews! 😊

I’ve been using a 5 gallon bucket for about a year now I put a 5 gallon garbage bag in the bucket with a bucket toilet seat I’ve tried a bunch of sawdust and other things the pressed coconut shells work the best put a couple handfuls in the bucket it’s best to separate your urine I’ve been to lazy to hook up a funnel so I’ve been using 1 bucket for #1 and another for #2 I used a bottle for a while but the bucket is easier to dump anyway after doing #2 cover it with the coconut compost a handful or 2 will be enough if you don’t cover it air tight or just leave it uncovered it won’t stink I was surprised about that and it doesn’t attract bugs just make sure everything is covered it doesn’t take much a 5 gallon bucket will last me about a month or a little longer I usual fill it about 3/4 full then tie the bag and dump in the trash it’s mostly composted so you could dump it into your own compost pile also before putting the bag in your bucket cover the bottom with some of the compost Incase the bag leaks and you did #1 you won’t have any cleanup after dumping your bucket makes life a lot easier and less smelly. There is a really good video of a French guy who has been doing this for years he has some drain holes in his waste bucket and after a few months his compost has broken down and he reuses the compost. The smell is what got me because outhouses smell terrible and this doesn’t sometimes it will have a faint smell for a while but it doesn’t last long. And it beats the heck out of going outside at night in the rain 🌧 and snow with the bears 🐻 and bugs 🐛 but that’s up to you I guess. 🧐

I love this it so cool. if you end up putting in a toilet you can put in a composting toilet so you don’t use a lot of water. I can’t wait to watch the journey of this beautiful cabin💕💕

Hannah, I love that I found your channel. I am 67 and with out going into details, bought an RV and completely revamped it. I have traveled in it quite a bit. I am selling my house and for the last year looking at property to buy and put a cordwood home on. I feel so inspired by what you are doing. In my youth very I new no woman that would try this on their own. So you are helping me to chase those doubts away. I have always wanted to do something like this, put you get married, have children, grandchildren... and you become 67. But I know this is something I can do, and part of the journey is facing the fear. Thanks for your work on this project. I look forward to catching up on missed videos. You are a modern day woman pioneer🤗

Yea, how'd we get so old!? How is the travel with the virus? Makes me want to get away from people all the more, they don't know what's going on! Good luck!

I haven't been this glued to a video in a while. Every second is like a dream. I'm still learning alot myself. I like how honest you're being in the video. Tears and all. I'd be feeling the same after a deal like this and all that space in a perfect place.

Eventually when you fix up the houses, rent (or Airbnb) out the second cabin and you’ll cover your own mortgage and expenses! Wow I’m so excited for you - this is such a great chapter in your life! Grow some more fruit trees and make whatever your heart desires and fill your homes with art : )

That’s not a great for her situation since she 1. has a larger following 2. is a single woman living alone and 3. vlogging whenever she leaves town so basically advertising “nobodys home and nobody can see the house with all these woods!”. It’s one thing buying a second property entirely to rent out, but if she rents out her actual personal property, her address will be publicly advertised for anyone to find.
@oliviaj90374 жыл бұрын
AB ah I agree about the fact it could be dangerous bc she has a larger following. But I don’t think it’s impossible to do the idea still. There are ways to keep the location hidden and I’m sure there are ways she could accept specific people. There will be a lot of help for her online if she wants to look up kinda like duplex situations. It’d all be up to her!

RIIIGHT girl I'm a sophomore in college rn so I got a few years, but I'm just looking at it as more time to save up to do this!! And prepare and learn as much as possible about gardening and farming and taking care of land and whatnot! Also researching where to actually buy the land because there are so many places to go

@@mcvic8273 yeah I am a junior in college and so I have a few years, but being from california I always forget that owning property is possible. Everything is just so expensive in my hometown and then I look at the property in the midwest and I am like, oh so you can really just be in your twenties and not rent. INSANE
