Holy shit! Country, rock, blues, a little growling soul. Johnny Kay was 50 years ahead of his time.

Everything John Kay did was awesome. Problem here was, the Steppenwolf fans didn't dig this music because to them "that's not Steppenwolf", and fans of this kind of music saw it was John Kay and stayed away from it because they thought "that's Steppenwolf", but it was great stuff! John was pretty much stereotyped back then, but he did alright overall...and the girl singers were fantastic too!!

Right, the HOF gets it right much of the time but there’s still some bands that haven’t gotten enough support to get on the ballot and sadly Steppenwolf is one of them

Fantastic album. I wore out the vinyl and then, when I found a few years ago that Steppenwolf had an internet site, I got 2 copies of the CD, just to be sure!

John Kay made two of my all time favorite albums. He had an AM radio hit after this one: Easy Evil.

🤔….John Kay (& Steppenwolf) - largely ignored by Classic Rock stations today (I didn’t say “totally” ignored). I’m not sure why - Steppenwolf has had a significant historical impact on Rock music, sort of between the “I Want To Hold Your Hand” early Beatles style to the Hard Rock era beginning in the late ‘60s/thru the ‘70’s. Steppenwolf music is found in a lot of movie soundtracks - most notably “Easy Rider”. Maybe John stepped on some sensitive political toes back in the day, who knows?….but I’ll hear Foghat, Stealers Wheel, and Peter Frampton (yawn) 20 times before Classic Rock Stations play “Born To Be Wild”, Magic Carpet Ride, Rock Me Baby, etc. By the way, the lead/solo guitarist is kicking’ as$ in this performance, especially considering the year this particular episode aired. Great talent, no doubt.

As Steve Martin would say as Navin Johnson in “The Jerk,” “I don’t know why. But this music makes me so sad.”

I was wondering who it is too. He’s making that bridge pickup on that Tele sing. He resembles Dickey Betts.

Thanks, love his tone on that modded Tele. Just looked him up/ he also played the lead on “Ride Capt Ride”, among others . Sadly we lost him in 2009 from Alzheimer’s

You're welcome..yes he passed too young..my age now 😞 I had forgotten he was in Blues Image was just researching for something with them b4 I came to reply and saw his name listed.

I believe it is Dennis Edmonton, aka Mars Bonfire writer of Born To Be Wild. Kent Henry looks nothing like this guy. Dennis aka Mars is credited as the 2nd guitarist on the studio version of this song.
