the squirrels could be hibernating? you've overfed them? my dad worked on a dairy farm back in the day, you needed to wear tights in the milking parlour in the middle of winter at 5am in the morning, they are a great and cheap insulation item of under clothing for winter wear (when we did have cold winters)

I work in Holy Trinity Church in Stratford Upon Avon & the whole grave yard is full of squirrels but had a favourite which would come running across the road when he heard me arriving,didn't see him for awhile & on Friday was the first time I'd seen him for awhile & saw him again today so hopefully your 2 are just hiding until they feel they are safe to come out & play xx

Dan, there wee good cupboards will be full lol. Coming up to winter, squirrels spend less time foraging outside their dens, and it’s more common for several squirrels to share a den. This behavior allows more animals to take shelter and also to keep each other warm. If predators are around they will also hide out. Fingers crossed they are safe xx

Yes Dan you were basically on the right track in that the same soap was often used for cleaning the house and people. In the 1950s my Grandmother would use a blocks of yellow all purpose soap for washing many things including the floors and also our bodies. Old cotton vests were used up as dishcloths for washing up and general leaning, but old underpants and knickers had a new life as floor cloths. Recycling is not a new idea.

Sad to hear about the squirrels. Always mixed feels about seeing new animals arounds. I have had juvenile hawks land on the patio fence and in the parking area. Great to see them that close up but sad knowing they are hunting the birds and squirrels you're feeding.

Even maybe for body washing , they used really harsh things in those days Carbolic soap was the normal then to wash with , sorry to hear about your two little squirrels, they are maybe in hiding if a sparrow hawk is seen about you will not see birds about for a few days or longer . Let’s just hope . They picked up the buzzards we’re about . And hidden . Wonder if that had something to do with the chicks in the spring as well. By the way , I think you need water mixed with the soap, and a scrubbing brush.You practice Dan ,and Mazzy can see how you do it. Mazzy I make my cucumber dip with plain yoghurt .
