Ohh what a deeply horrifying interpretation, seems much closer to Homer’s Odyssey than some. Poor Odysseus. Digging her thumb into the scratches she’d made and magically gagging him were so visceral. Her power over everything on the island but Hermes is so All Consuming in this. The way that she quickly undoes her magic on him when she sees Hermes is watching… really powerful and realistic take on domestic abuse. The way Odysseus breaks down once he’s over the threshold… I just want him to have all the consensual hugs he wants!! Gorgeous work, this is beautifully drawn and the movement is excellent.

Thank you!! I wanted to make a very naïve/soft acting Calypso (to match Barbra Wangui’s voice) while still very much showing that cycle of abuse and that she’s the villain of this part of the story (in the Odyssey and in Epic). I made sure to keep Odysseus’s moment at the end as the very last frames I drew so I could take my time in making sure the emotion came through the way I wanted so I’m glad it seems like it paid off haha

This was so good. I never considered the idea that Hermes was lingering around, forcing Calypso not to delay, but I do love this interpretation! Also, Calypso being so childish because she had no one to raise her but herself! It's miserable! It's lonely! They're so alone together that this is nothing short of heartbreaking!

just watched this three times in a row, this has gotta be THE best animatic for im not sorry for loving you!!!!!! i love how you don’t shy away from showcasing calypso’s abusive behaviors but you also capture her biggest flaw: her immaturity. it’s clear that she doesn’t consciously realize how powerful and dangerous she is until her powers backfire on her. which i think both humanizes her and adds to how scary this situation (and her island) is for odysseus. not all abusers are aware of how terrible they really are and instead they jump through mental hoops to justify their behavior. add that into the fact that abusers can be set off by the littlest things, my heart absolutely broke for odysseus. it’s clear how being stuck with her for years gave him a shit ton of trauma responses. the most obvious one is him trying to placate her by saying he love her. and less obvious (but much more tragic in my opinion) is his unwillingness to burst into a full on sprint when she first tells him that he’s been set free. while this news brings him joy, it doesn’t bring him hope because years of abuse taught him to be distrust and always wait for the other shoe to drop. he walks slowly but steadily to the shore (excluding calypso’s interruptions) as if not showing visible excitement will lessen the despair that would come if it turned out to be a lie. and also her taking his voice is sooo perverse when you consider that’s he was a warrior of the mind!!! most, if not all, of his past successes were made possible with his wit and tongue. so for odysseus, after breaking up with his mentor/friend and being forced on two occasions to use his voice to sacrifice his men, to be completely deprived of his greatest weapon seems like torture times 50. i’m sure that with every time it happened, he become more resigned to calypso’s abuse because how else would he able to fight back without his voice, his wit? with your interpretation of this song, ody’s method to beat posedion in 600 strikes makes sense. not only did his attempt to verbally make peace with the god of the sea fail, so did his numerous attempts with calypso. it’s no wonder he fully abandons his philosophy and gets a bit stab happy.
@worldofkhi29540Ай бұрын
forgot to add, that ody seeing calypso bleed is such a cool detail as well!!! in that moment, he fully realizes that she’s childish. which of course, doesn’t negate the years of abuse and isolation she put him through, but it does give him perspective. it’s not hard to imagine that right before he impales Poseidon (for the first time), he remembered seeing calypso’s gold blood. he may not have injured her but if she can be injured by a mortal being, then the same goes for poseidon.
@itsajollyjesterАй бұрын
YES! I wanted to make it clear that her childishness doesn’t absolve her from being abusive and is even one of the main causes of it (and makes her TERRIFYING!! Childish villains who can’t/refuse to understand their actions hurt people are so scary to me)

So amazing!!!! And such a perfect interpretation of domestic abuse. The way she hurts and gags odesseus. But immediately reversed it once she saw hermes. I lovw the way he doesnt look human too, a lot of people represent him as completely human, but the way there are leaves growing out of his head and he has no mouth and glowing eyes seems more realistic. And it separates him into a more quietly threatening presence, which is what calypso would see him as since she is having her status quo threatened by his presence. And though it is clear in some places thwt she regrets hurting, its not lasting like she's still the child that was abandoned on the island. And she only realised what she done and stopped her tantrum when it physically hurt her. Her remorse is conditional, which is so true for children having a tantrum. This shows how childlike calypso really is and is absolutely amazing. This is so beautiful and a beautiful interpretation of how this happened and your gorgeous art is really the thing that brings it all to life.

WOW. I'm so sorry that I slept on this, I've found that I don't necessarily enjoy the animatics for this song so I don't watch them - too many are too sympathetic to Calypso, and while I can understand SOME amount of sympathy, it gives me a bit of the ick when it's too much. This is just about PERFECT, it really drives home that Calypso is a GOD, they truly are not on the same level as humans. Growing up alone with nearly unlimited power, being able to take your frustrations out on anything or anyone only to fix them with a flick of the wrist... that's terrifying. And it seems so casual for her, but it is definitely NOT nothing to poor Ody... the implications are so brutal but so beautifully drawn for us. I loved Hermes looming in the distance, only his eyes visible. Odysseus flinching multiple times at being touched by her, there were so many little details... thank you so much for sharing this with us. There's more details I loved and will love, I'm sure of it, but for now I'll end the comment so I can watch this another couple of times

OH MY GOD, is Calypso still a child?? Like, a teen in god years?? I mean, I guess she is only 100 years!! Is that why Odysseus has to kneel to meet her eyes, is that why Hermes watches and stares her down to make sure she listens?! I could be reaching and totally wrong but that's such an interesting take and would partially explain the tantrums, NOT ONLY is no one there to correct or teach her, but she can't even regulate her own emotions yet!!

I LOVE THIS OH MY GOD!! The way you made her so canon to homer's odyssey while still keeping the childish version Jorge was going for?? The way you ripped open my brain and took all my interpretations with this song then more?? I LOVE YOU!! HANDS DOWN THE MOST CANON "NOT SORRY FOR LOVING YOU" ANIMATION I'VE SEEN!!! 0:19 oh he looks so shocked and relieved my poor boy... 0:32 I love this scene so much it really shows the one-sidedness of how close they are. Calypso expecting him to stay and listen to her cause in her mind their that close and Odysseus already getting up because he can't wait to leave oh my GOD. Their actions contrasting eachother!!! 0:40 Odysseus lowk looks scared here idk if that was your intention but I love it, he's aware of how powerful gods are when their mad, and calypso seems (to me) to be the type to change and lash out randomly 0:42 THE FLINCHING!!! Even if calypso didn't do everything homer's own did she was still a horrible abuser to odysseus and I love when that's acknowledged!! 0:46 AHH!! HER CASUALLY HURTING ODYSSEUS BUT NOT EVEN PAYING ATTENTION TO THAT CAUSE HIS FEELINGS/WELL BEING DOESN'T MATTER TO HER ESP WHEN FACED WITH /HER/ FEELINGS WHICH OBVIOUSLY IS MORE IMPRTANT HERE /sarc 0:53 Digging her thumbs into his injury to hurt him more oh my god she's brutal. The way Ody doesn't even react because honestly what else would he expect 1:08 ok this is where i believe you were evesdropping on my rants to my friends because how is it you plucked the idea of, 1: The Island reacting with her emotions, 2: Calypso finding a way to silence Odysseus using her magic/brute force ,directly out of my brain?? It really shows the way she didn't care about what HE wanted to say, she only cares about HER and HER feelings. It's also such a childish thing to do but also a thing that really shows how much power she has over him. Odysseus shaking because if his strongest weapon, his TONGUE/VOICE was taken away from him, just like that. It really shows how powerless he is when it comes to Gods and God knows he hates being powerless. I HC that one of Odysseus' biggest fears is being mute/being unable to talk/weasel his way out of something which just makes this more terrifying for him. 1:25 Hermes showing up, reminding Calypso she can't just delay and dwell to try and keep Odysseus. The fear on her face, despite not being scared the whole time before this, showing that really the only person that can "control" her is someone stronger than her. 1:33 She's getting desperate, instead of using brute force she's trying to open him to the idea of staying because she realized it's really only up to Odysseus. Her removing the wound and laughing it of like it was just a silly mistake, still not owning up to her actions even now AUHG. Her removing her spell on odysseus to again, brush it off while not even acknowledging she did it. Odysseus really just looks tired of her. 1:46 THE LIGHT RETURNING TO HIS EYES WHEN HE SAW THE RAFT TO FREEDOM OH MY GOD DID YOU JUST ST@B ME?? 1:48 the shot of him looking past calypso and at freedom vs. her looking at him hopefully AUUGH him not meeting her eyes, like he's already imagining being free of her OH MY GODDD 1:55 THE FORCED HUG AS IF TO FORCE HIM TO STAY HERE. THE ISLAND ACTING WITH HER EMOTIONS/WANTS AGAIN AND FORCING THEM TO STAY CLOSE LIKE SHE WANTS. THE WAY SHE'S ACTUALLY GETTING DESPERATE CAUSE HE'S SO CLOSE TO LEAVING!!! 2:02 there's something abt Hermes just there in the background shaking his head at her and her releasing him that's so chilling. It really drives home the fact that the only one she'll listen to is someone above her. She looks angry at being forced to do something even though she's been forcing Odysseus to do things this whole time OH THE CHILDISH HYPROCRICY AHH. 2:06 Odysseus looking scared as her emotions spiral more, causing the island to be unstable. 2:11 This shot is so chilling. Odysseus looking at the raft moving farther away like his chance is about to leave and Calypso, his captor, appearing and looking so unhinged and he looks so afraid and oh my god I love you. 2:15 THANK YOU!! I've always seen Odysseus' "I love you" as an effort to get her to calm down, to me he sounded afraid and desperate, just saying what he thinks will calm her down. And it working, her tears leaving and the island calming the second she gets what she wants, her emotions switching just as fast as a child would when they finally get the toy they've been crying and screaming for. 2:18 Odysseus kneeling desperately, looking up at her, showing even so close to freedom that he's at her mercy. HSKFJF 2:24 HER EMOTIONS EXPLODING SO QUICKLY AGAIN AFTER BEING DENIED WHAT SHE WANTS AHH!! Odysseus actually looking scared and getting so desperate he just jumps and swims to the rafts to get away from her oh my god. The island being her outlet to her emotions, her not reigning it in because she doesn't think she'll get hurt and doesn't care if he gets hurt. 2:43 HER GETTING HURT AND ODY LOOKING LIKE HE REALISED SOMETHING!! LIKE HE JUST REALIZED SHE CAN GET HURT TOO AHH! Her stopping when she gets hurt because it wasn't supposed to hurt HER, it was only supposed to hurt Odysseus dfjkfg. 2:53 Ody passing the border that changes the scenery, showing Calypso's border and where she can't reach ahhh. 2:55 The way he looks like he can't believe it at first, then the light returns to his eyes once he processes he's free and then he starts crying/smiling in relief oh my god just let this man see his wife please I beg of you (Side eye to Poseiden). Whoops I got a bit too excited and wrong too much....fangirled too close to the sun I guess. BUT YOUR ANIMATIC WAS AMAZING I LOVED IT AND I LOVE YOU AND UR CHARACTERIZATION I WANT TO KISS UR BRAIN /p /pos

OP HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE THE BIGGEST BRAINED TAKE ON THIS SONG EVER the way she acts like a child throwing a tantrum?? that she tries to _sweep it under the rug_ when Hermes is watching?? her LITERALLY TAKING AWAY HIS VOICE OMG YOUR MIND?? a lot of people seem to think her being basically developmentally stunted excuses her actions, but you clearly show that-no. she's Still An Abuser ☕ and ody. omg ody first let me get the simping out of the way-he's so pretty and his eyes are so pretty and his hair is so pretty and long and his kicked puppy expression makes me wanna pick him up and protect him from the world and and and-🥺🥺🥺 (but fr i had to rewind this a few times bc i was distracted by how pretty he is. this is not a critique btw 👀) no but fr i _appreciate_ that he looks _genuinely scared_ of her. ppl generally make him either a) weirdly sympathetic to her 😬, or b) completely done with her shit and while i like the second one too, this feels so,,, real? like, one of my biggest critiques of this song is how the whole thing is spent entirely on calypso's pity party with ody's perspective being _pretty much brushed to the side even tho he's literally her victim_ and this animatic genuinely fixes all that?? bc we get to _see_ just HOW MUCH his time on ogygia has broken him (even without bringing up what happens at nighttime in the odyssey), he's so resigned to calypso casually hurting and controlling him, it's heartbreaking to watch 😭😭 it really hammers in the point that Yes, he Was Abused, _Even If_ calypso Didn't Mean It, _Even If_ It Wasn't As Bad As In The Odyssey, And Yes, calypso IS A Villain For What She Did Regardless Of Her Tragic Backstory genuinely,, this animatic was HEALING. it is now my personal canon for this song and i'm starting a petition to make this the Canon animatic for the song bc it's so perfect ✍️ this comment is long and rambly but i hope it makes sense. thank you for the amazing video 🤗🤗

@wrong_thyme You're good on rambling because I'm gonna ramble back lol I was so surprised when I first started seeing discourse around her character with people justifying/sympathizing with her when this songs basically a 2010s Era KZbinr apology lmao like "I'm sorry IF my actions hurt you, but I've been in a dark place, and maybe you're just sensitive, and also I did nothing wrong actually," Also, I think I accidentally made him too pretty haha
