Mr. Incredible was a b!tch because he didn’t stand on business. Everyone wanted him to team up with them and he always declined to do so. Which I respected greatly. Because some people do better solo than in a group. But when Syndrome tried to shame and guilt him into apologizing for not letting him be his sidekick Bob caved to Buddy and said he was sorry for how he treated him. Tf?! The worst thing that Bob did was obey the government and marry Helen and have children with her. He became domesticated and pathetic. And never truly recovered from it.

One thing to note: Bob is, far and away, stronger than even the most powerful non-Super. He's strong enough to bend steel just by tripping on a skateboard. Yet, even at the height of his rage breaking point, he still avoids killing both his boss and Mirage, despite being fully capable of doing so without much effort. Yet, the two of them escape his grasp with their lives (and had Mr. Huph not been thrown through a dozen walls, both of them could have probably walked away from it). Even when he's at his lowest, Bob is in control of his strength, and he won't kill those who are weaker than him just because he can. Bob Parr embodies the phrase "true masculinity is having the strength to exert your will upon others, but choosing not to use it unless absolutely necessary."

One thing you can also notice is how, during the final battle, Mr. Incredible starts to show an inclination for understanding the strengths of others and how to best use them. He trusts Dash to go long to catch the remote or for Helen to handle the Omnidroid's laser gun. A lot of media will depict someone who is very physically strong as not being the brightest and needing someone else to take the tactical lead, but the final battle depicts Mr. Incredible as adaptive, intelligent, and capable to leading others. This is something I REALLY wish the second film had touched upon more because I think it shows a very interesting progression of his character and other ways for him to be strong.

The Incredibles is easily the best superhero film, likely because it isn't trying to be. It's the story of a marriage and family and the struggles and challenges they face. The superhero setting in this story does what I love most about speculative fiction. It mythicizes the story and brings the metaphorical into the literal to exaggerate the point. The Incredibles does this flawlessly.

One detail I love about his "I'm not strong enough scene" with Helen is that there is a great sense of guilt and shame in him because he is the one to blame for almost losing them, so when he orders them to stay in the car is not because he thinks he is strong to take on the omni droid alone but rather because he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he put them in danger again. So when Helen kisses him it's very much a comforting kiss as it is a passionate one. I brings everythings in this scene together soo damn beautifully.

“I’m not strong enough” is a trope of the superhero genre that I don’t think can be overused. Tony Stark, obsessing over protecting the people he cares about, yet ever fearful that it will never be enough. Times when Barry Allen, even as the Flash, was just not fast enough. Luisa Madrigal, who was secretly caving under the pressure of being the -oldest and- strongest child of the family. Heck, Anakin Skywalker even fits the trope, albeit more as a cautionary tale. It’s honestly so humanizing to see these powerhouses cave to the crippling feeling of inadequacy. It echoes a solemn truth that no one is immune to the toxic cycle of not being “good enough.”

Bob's growth of learning that his house-wife's job was much harder than he gave her credit for, and accepting his role as a father can still be a hero. And Helen learning that getting back out in the field wasn't all it was cracked up to be and that being with her family is where she truly belongs. Both parents gained a reminder than being a parent is more important to them than their glory days as a hero.
@falcon13785 ай бұрын
@@scipocelah6677Yeah definitely agree. Incredibles 2 is not nearly as bad as a sequel as The legend of Quora. Are both huge influential IP’s? Of course they are, we’re talking about them right now. But, ATLA at its core strived at worldbuilding and understanding the fragility of characters and their flaws. The same goes for the incredibles double feature, except it continues that trend with a direct sequel. The character development isn’t gone, Dash simply takes a backseat (I really wish he got way more focus than he did, he got done dirty) and Violet is much more forward than she was in the first movie. That’s about all that changes. Helen essentially experiences the same thing Bob does with less to think about, and the movies end the same: Frozone saves the day, as the kids become a huge help along with the help of their parent who wasn’t fighting from the start. TLOQ sucked because it essentially lacked any growth whatsoever. Quora was a bad protagonist, and exudes none of the traits the viewer was ever told an avatar should be. That’s fine, as long as there is some sort of development from there, but there never was. In conclusion (if you ever even make it this far lol) ATLA would’ve survived with a better sequel if it were a direct continuation of events. The avatar joins the White Lotus and thwarts all attempts of a growing resistance against the peace. Strongest Avatar we’ve ever seen, with glaring ignorance and naivety that only their peers are wise enough to see. (Traits that TLOQ has in some areas) The incredibles, on the other hand, deserves a time skip. The super family known for saving the entire city they serve has now grown up a little. Elasti-Girl and Mr. incredible are both exiting their service, and raising a teen-aged Jack-Jack, while his siblings are interested in fighting crime. The story goes along with the tale of naivety, and never forgetting where you came from. Maybe Dash becomes a big shot hero, while his sister, Violet, struggles with popularity. As Dash grows, the bigger the target on his back. Violet isn’t there to protect him and it ends up being on his family, namely Violet, to save him because his circle of “friends” was fake. Somewhat like The incredibles 2, but with an adjustment for time. See, I’ve fixed the stories so that they’d be better sequels, but a lot of heavy lifting is required for ATLA because of how important that story is, and, more importantly, the terms the reader is left with at the end of the first installment.

This video hits really hard, and I needed it rn. As a kid, elementary through high school, I never got anything lower than a C. I was an exceptional student. I had no anxieties about my future. Then I went to community college. It was an entirely different environment. I had to force social interaction, the professors weren't as invested in me as teachers used to be, it was much more impersonal, and I didn't have any real desire to be there. It's been draining and depressing. My first year, I was getting low Bs and low Cs, and I was honest about it with my parents. Last year, I failed most of my classes, and I hid it from everyone in my life. This past year, they wouldn't let me back in the fall semester, and my advisor only let me retake one class this semester. It was going okay until my laptop crashed. I lost 2 weeks. Then I ran out of my ADHD medication, so I was overwhelmed and unable to catch up. All this time, I've been desperately trying to catch back up so I could come forward with the truth but soften the blow with the good news that I had improved. But that was never going to happen. Besides people I knew from college, nobody has known about this. My parents think I'm about to graduate and get my associate degree in three weeks. Tomorrow night, when none of us are busy, I'm going to tell them the truth. I've never felt more guilty or ashamed, but this is how I move forward. I'm not strong enough. I need to take a different path than college, I'm glad I finally realized that, but there is no moving forward without being honest with the ones you love and letting them help you. These past 3 years have been the worst of my life, and I have myself to blame for thinking I could get out of it on my own. This is the second time I'm talking about it. I talked to a close friend about it this past weekend, and I'm about to talk to my old youth pastor about it. Tomorrow, I stop hiding, and let my family know everything. It's going to be the hardest thing I've ever done, but without doing that myself, there's no moving forward. If you're reading this, trust me. Always be up front with the people you love, even if it's hard, or it will be much more painful if you wait. We are stronger when we rely on those we love. Edit: I talked to my parents, my dad was understanding and forgiving. My mom said she loves me, but it will take a while for her to even process what happened. I can't expect her to forgive me until she comes to terms with the situation. I understand her frustration and why she feels betrayed. For at least the rest of this year, I will pick up more hours at my job to pay back wasted money, and I will wait for what I feel called to do with my life before returning to college or finding a trade to go into. It will take a while for things to fully heal, but I know they will, and I'm less anxious about my future than I've been in a long time. I appreciate all the support.

As a man shouldering the roles of husband and father, I tend to view myself as the rock that shields and protects my family from the ferocious storms of the outside world! It becomes easy to believe that if I falter, show any cracks at all, display fear, anxiety, or despair, my family will see them and crumble. I imagine them thinking that if something is bad enough to cause me to be afraid, it must be absolutely horrific! So, I cannot fail, for if I do, my family will surely be swept away! And yet, this is a common fallacy that many of us fall victim to. This is that pride that wells up from deep within us as men and tells us we MUST be strong in all things! We get things done! People rely on us! They depend on us! Not the other way around! But that's just it... We cannot take on these roles (husband, father, etc) alone and also be successful. We will never be strong enough. And that brings me to one of the hardest lessons that I am atill learning. It is this: It is a common belief that the act of giving or generosity is a difficult, unnatural action that requires great selflessness. Generosity is lauded as heroic, but there is actually something tied to generosity that is even greater in its difficulty to carry out and higher in its achievement. It is the ability to ask for and willingly accept help when it is needed... The ability to give others the opportunity to be generous and humbly accept that generosity. It is so incredibly hard to admit that I cannot do something, that I'm scared, or that I need help. I, even to this day, will find myself doing everything I can in order to avoid these things. And yet, when I finally do, it ends up leaving me wonder why I didn't ask or say something sooner... Why was I being so stubborn? When you share your feelings, especially with a loving spouse, together, you actually become stronger! Your cracks end up being a source of even greater strength!

Thank you for being such a voice of reason for men caught in this modern whirlpool of over-feminization and over-masculinization. The men of the West need to be reminded about the healthy ways we can represent our masculinity and it's always refreshing to hear you reference how these examples can be appllied for a healthier masculinity to strive for. When I see things like the struggle of "Mr. Incredible" and his relatable inability to admit his weaknesses, I'm always reminded of a speech from "Guildarts Clive" in "Fairy Tail". Natsu (Main Character) was trying to fight a much stronger wizard (Guildarts) for an entrance exam to advance his rank in his guild. After Guildarts revealed his truly overwhelming strength, Natsu, who is normally supremely headstrong and prideful, had no choice but to bow down and surrender out of fear. The speech Guildarts gave after seeing this admission of weakness and watching Natsu bow before him will always stick with me and has helped to shape me into the man I am today. "A wise choice... Those with the courage to re-sheathe their blades are exceptionally rare... Fear is not "evil"... It is to know your own weakness. When you know your weakness, you can become both strong and gentle... You pass, kid!" We all have weaknesses. To ignore them is to court ruin. To acknowledge them, work on them and accept the help of others to make up for them is the path to fulfillment.

I recently took a Biblical Manhood course. The core of the course, and catch phrase, was "I am not enough." Rather than lifting men up, it tore down every masculine standard we adhere to and showed the strength in weakness. It was all about accepting failures, which are inevitable, and leaning on each other to fulfill our obvious weaknesses. Great video!

We also see Bob using his inside knowledge of the insurance company to give his customers a guaranteed on their claims, showing he's willing to put in the effort to help, even in a job he hates, even when it's going against what he's supposed to do, he's still going to try to do the right thing.
@Jay2JayGaming6 ай бұрын
Something that always bugged me about this situation, was that the movie (and Helen) make his desire to save lives into purely an ego thing. "Reliving the glory days". Imagine Bob wasn't a superhero, but a fireman that was forced into insurance work, and constantly felt like his life didn't matter anymore because he wasn't saving people's lives. And everyone's response to that was 'lol, suck it up gloryhound'. We'd rightly call those people psychopaths and be done with it. The thing is Bob, _had_ to lie to Helen if he wanted to go to the island, because, I think it should be obvious, she wouldn't have let him go. Ironically, something I think is never really explored in the movie is how while Bob is given purpose by saving lives, Helen just seems to treat her hero career like it was a sort of fun job she did for a while. Honestly she comes off as not really caring about other people's livelihoods or whether they live or die. Nor does she seem to understand or care about how important being a hero is to Bob. I mean, there's no reason she couldn't be cool with him going out to save people during "bowling nights". If anything, her vehement opposition to Bob's heroism is the primary thing that drives a wedge between them. Giving the man a few hours a week to himself so he can feel fulfilled isn't a huge ask, and it's the fact that she absolutely will not let him do it openly that makes him so distant. If you think about it, most of this movie shames Bob for the problems Helen causes.
@Eilonwy956 ай бұрын
I think it is partly a glory days thing, but, as MasterSamwise points out, Bob does indeed want to help others as well. Helen’s concern about this is not just to shut him down or shame him. She is concerned about it “uprooting our family, again.” Helen even acknowledges in a scene that she knows that work is frustrating and she appreciates him. She might not realize how much he is struggling and they both have room to grow in their communication. Helen has a character arc just like Bob does. Both of them have understandable flaws that they learn to grow out of. Helen learns to embrace the use of their powers for saving people when necessary. With great power does come great responsibility. But a different great responsibility also comes with having kids. I do not believe she should just give him one night a week to be a secret superhero. That would endanger their family. It would probably be way more productive for them to talk about a job change that would be more fulfilling for Bob. Helens attitude change from her interview (like Bobs attitude change) is very interesting. She believes she shouldn’t give up hero work “I don’t think so” Bob talks about settling down. And then when they have to settle down, Helen is the one more easily able to embrace her new role. I may be over generalizing, but I think there is a male/female difference in these attitudes towards settled family life. I think women can often just feel more fulfilled by raising kids. We tend to be very relational. That doesn’t mean we never cared about our jobs. I know (and I understand this is anecdotal evidence) many women who swore they would never give up a career. Then they had kids and put it way to the side, because their kids became more important to them. I can’t speak as well as MasterSamwise to the Male perspective on this. I do find this movie to be very accurate with how men and women often react to settling down. I apologize if this was a garbled mess or added nothing new from the video.

He definitely has pride. And I was perhaps a bit too generous and overstated his altruism. He wants to be a hero because he loves being a hero. I’ve had my own long battle with internalizing the “ideal” masculinity, being able to do it all, no help, helping everyone. Through friendships, my wonderful girlfriend, and a special game I hold close to my heart, I learned that I *can’t* do it all, and that’s ok. I have friends who will support me, friends who are ok with seeing me weak and vulnerable and not think any less of me for it, friends who I can ask for help simply when I think I’m not up to the task and they can pick up where I fell out. If being masculine means supporting everyone, you must remember that everyone includes yourself, a support pillar with a cracked base can only be covered up for so long until it buckles under its own weight. Take care of yourself
@CyberPunkBadGuy6 ай бұрын
You see the problem with that mentality is that people do not support men and in modern day and age actively hate them and find excuses to deem them evil and destroy them so they are more easily used as stepping stools for personal gain. If a man ain't stupid and have half a brain cell he would know that he is the only one to support himself and at that point when you are strong why support all the crappy people who scorn you but exalt you now when you are powerful, why would a man even want anything from them when one is strong enough for themself and have already gotten so far and done so much themself its clear a man would not need them, he already proven he only needs himself. You say a man cant be that correct? better yet maybe you cant be , maybe some other guys cant, maybe that's what you tell yourself. but I don't care, go right ahead and do that chief, that belief validates your life style is all, you couldn't care less or think anymore pass that point. being masculine is best telling everyone else to screw off and doing what for ones own best self, screw off with their demands, screw off with their expectations, screw off with them telling you what to do, especially these coming years of hate and disgust towards men, openly accepted. Tell men what is masculine? why ? so then they must follow your commands and criterias? Bottom line is what fool would take advice from people who do not care about them but care solely about themself and what they can get from you. Masculinity is knowing the strength and power of rebellion and not bending to the greed and selfishness of the others and their community that hates them. Its knowing and accepting strength comes and ends with ones self, its foolish to proclaim strength from others while people scorn weak men, they scorn men who are not strong enough for themself to begin with, its ironic. . No, I know what masculinity is, Masculinity is rubbish , Its whatever any clown can make it out to be to feel better about themself, to validate their own life choices. I couldn't careless what it want to be, its just another word used to make demands of another person or to exalt and validate themself that "THIS IS WHAT MASCULINITY IS" they proclaim proudly and then point to their own life and personal beleif like a clown.

This movie is the prime example of why I detest the argument: "Animated movies don't have to be good if it's meant for kids". Yes, most animated media in the west is catered for young children but don't forget that they are first and foremost a family movie. A movie that both children and adults can get something out of. Even as a kid I understood a lot of the nuance regarding Bob's and Helen's Character arcs but of course not completely until i reached adulthood.

"Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their work. For if one falls, the other one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!" As much as we men recognize that we're called to be the pillar of our homes and communities, the fact is that we cannot do so alone, and this has been true since the beginning. Even in this last century, the truism has been restated as "No man is an island" (and yes, the name of the remote island Bob is taken to for his "mission" is a reference to said quote). I'll be honest, I've been feeling this for a bit now, between not being able to do the work I'm called to do and having to focus on helping take care of my aging grandfather as well as my sister and her son. I know I need this "holding pattern," but I also know how anxious it makes me and how the doubts gnaw at my mind as a result. Thankfully, this movie exists to remind me that I don't need to go it alone, that I have people I can rely on for help. Truly, one of the greatest movies of all time.

The idea of not being strong enough haunted me, and to a lesser extent still haunts me. When it got to its worst, I wrote a note. It was short I felt like there wasn't anything I could say "I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough". Those six words were going to be my last, clearly it didn't end that way. What stopped me were my two younger brothers, I couldn't hurt them. So their why I worked at being stronger, mentally and physically. Bob Parr/Mr. Incredible is that example of "good masculinity" that we all want. He's not perfect, he's got plenty of failings in his own right, but even with all his power and strength, he's just a man trying to provide for his family, help others, and be the partner/father that Helen and the kids deserve. What strikes me about the married life portion before he starts being a hero again isn't so much that he hates his family, it's that you can see that he *knows* he's failing them. And it aches.

For me, the best thing about the movie is when Bob belittles his son's graduation, considering it a celebration of mediocrity that is not worth his time. In his view, Dash should rise above the common man and not have to adapt to the world of mundane people. He has a point, the damn legalistic system is strangling him and sinking him into a world of moral mediocrity and has deprived him of his purpose and identity which was his source of joy and pride. Helen, on the other hand, believes that Bob is disconnecting from reality and sending a negative message to his children, do not strive to study or excel, because that is for mediocre pathetic muggles and you are a superior species. Have you played a prank on your teacher with your powers? You haven't done anything wrong son, having powers gives you the right to treat those muggles with as rudeness and contempt as you like. Bob sends a cynical and irresponsible message to his children that may end up alienating them from normal society.
@Kai-Xi6 ай бұрын
Interesting perspective! That is not at all how I read that line. Plenty of people without superpowers have the same mindset as Bob here. 4th grade to 5th grade isn't even moving on from elementary school. Calling it a graduation makes it sound like an achievement, instead of something normal. Bob's comment how "they keep inventing new ways to celebrate mediocrity," is about how these things discourage anyone from trying to be super in any way (powers or no). Meanwhile him getting excited about Dash pulling a prank is not saying it's okay for Dash to be rude to people without powers, but instead "my son is really talented and I want to encourage him to be proud of his talents and not shamed for having a talent." No one else in Dash's life is acknowledging how excited he gets about being fast, with his sister finding it annoying, his mom saying he has to keep it hidden, and therefore he's not able to tell any friends he may have. To me, this is the same as a parent being excited for kids showing off a picture they drew or something they made in minecraft, even when they were supposed to be doing homework; it's not the ignoring school work that is being praised, but the parent isn't letting that negative aspect shut down the kids' joy or discouraging them from working at things they are good at.
@Markus2E5I66 ай бұрын
I never took it as him thinking powered people don't deal with mudane stuff but the sheer stupidity of having a ceremony for just going up a grade. That felt more of a dad vs mom thing. Dad thinks its stupid and not noteworthy enough for a ceremony whilst mom wants to celebeate everything about her children. If you celebrate everything nothing is special.
