If I may, Haldo is not a really great leader, was an asshole, and looks sad all the time but Poe was a recently demoted Captain asking a vice admiral what was going on, chain of command exists for a reason and sewing dessent with the troops is not the mature or correct way to point out flaws with superiors. If he was going to question her, he should have asked her privately not make blind accusations based on the fact that she was filing the small transports with fule. While haldo didn't deserve her rank, Poe was not justified in what he did either.

I find that some of the best stories are political art pieces. They don't tell you what to think, but they give an insight to certain political topics in unique ways that don't take you out of the story. Sadly, as it appears, this form of art has been largely forgotten by modern screenwriters

Even when it comes to her motives for fighting. We love that she does it for love, but I think another major factor is that she does it because SHE loves it. Vi loves fighting. And she knows how to wield strength. Unlike other characters, they may fight when they HAVE to, but they don't go out of their way to hone their skills and being absolute units in a battle. Even Sevika only seems to use stregnth as a means of self defense, when she needs it, she's not spending her sparetime boxing to beat her own high score. Vi employs her stregnth for love, but she also loves to fight, and makes it all the more convincing that when she gets into it and it's a wild ride. So many other "strong female characters" only fight to contradict the notion that they cant, to surprise someone with their rebellion against the norm. They themselves rarely have a passion for fighting itself, its usually just the flattering idea of being intimidating and being capable. Part of the fun of watching Vi is her passion for fighting, and it makes it all the more conviincing that she would use her fists to solve every problem.

I think this can be summarized as does this art try to argue a point or explore a reality? I've seen so many girl-power movies and shows that come off empty and uninspiring, the kind of stuff people complain about in "strong female characters done wrong". But then you have Arcane. Filled to the brim with muscular , powerful, intelligent, diabolical women, and who's complaining? I've yet to even the slightest miff at them. Because a lot of the former examples of "strong female characters" were written as arguments against shallow notions. Meanwhile Arcane just explores female baddassery and demonstrates the vision along with the rest of the story and themes they explore. Like the many kinds of love.

Wait why are we acting like Turning Red is political? They may make 1 or 2 jokes here and there but its literally just a Chinese girl going through hardships with the allegory of Womanhood and periods. In whay way is that "Political activism" in your mind. Plus people quite liked that movie what are you on?

Hi! I’m one of those people who found the movie inspiring/edifying! I do really like your videos, so please understand I’m disagreeing respectfully. My wife and I saw it together and loved it, here are some of our thoughts, in brief. I wasn’t very familiar with the original story, and went back and read those three pages after the movie, and was very pleasantly surprised how close it was. I would even say they were extremely respectful of Tolkien’s work. I think Helm had much more of an arc than “trust Hera.” I felt more his battle with despair, and his noble self-sacrifice. I also really enjoyed Wulf as a villain, I loved watching his consistent character flaw push him further and further into dishonor. And Hera herself, as you pointed out, avoided many of the modern female protagonist pitfalls. She reminded me much more of animated Mulan than live action Mulan, overcoming her challenges through cunning rather than brute force. Overall, I found it to be a very ‘moral’ film, about honor and compassion triumphing over dishonor, vengeance, and obsession. I don’t expect to or aim to change anyone’s mind about the film, it certainly has its flaws, but I hope everyone gives it a chance, as you may be pleasantly surprised like we were.

There’s a really good live action adaptation of a Japanese anime. The Rurouni Kenshin live action film series is a masterpiece and critically acclaimed. I was very pleased to see my favorite characters and villains and the anime world come to life in a really well-made live action film series! Unless the live action is excellent, I think best stick to the original animation.

The reason every industry is dominated by men is because we are more creative, are willing to risk more to succeed, and have 300,000 years of evolution that rewarded men for being creative which can not be said for women. Men had to figure out how to impress mates to pass on their genes, while women just sat there. Men are simply more innovative and imaginative. I await the inevitable feminist cope.

it's much simpler than that. If you talk politics in a story but do it badly, it's seen as political activism.

Bad characters don't exist in a vacuum. It's their propensity to warp the story, world and charcters to serve them and them alone. Mary Sue is only a problem when none of her flaws ever get adressed. Badly written characters exist in a world where "everyone on the train claps." Galadriel's presence caused every other combatant to suck. Her presence made all the kids bully her.

The sexist argument isn't to say that some shows are poorly written, but to say that these shows are bad because of feminism trying to include women in shows. Feminism did not introduce poor writting. On the other side, capitalism...

If you tried to adapt Faramir's character straight into the theatrical Two Towers it would mean that Frodo and Sam's journey in it would have had no stakes and no tension. The book Two Towers doesn't have this issue for a simple reason: Faramir's part in it is an intercession and Frodo and Sam's concluding section ends in Shelob's Lair. If you cut Shelob's Lair from the theatrical Return of the King and stuck it into Two Towers it'd have given Two Towers RoTK's runtime and left RoTK lacking when it came to Frodo and Sam's journey, which, in the book, ends with the Scouring of the Shire, not with the destruction of the Ring. And if you tried to film the Scouring of the Shire into RoTK it would have meant sticking a 40 min sequence onto a film that already had five endings. In the end Faramir comes to the same conclusion his book counterpart does, but it takes longer and allows the film to end in a way where all of its hanging arcs get to be satisfied at once. Movie Denethor, I think, gets it far worse off.

Great women don't reject or hate men. They work with great men. In the original mulan animated movie, mulan was the hero but she worked with unique, quirky and capable men who were strange but without them she would have died.

Because you can make an interesting, strong and influential female character without making them insufferable man haters or making them super overpowered and invulnerable. In fact, vulnerability is not only a human trait, it is one most commonly seen in women. It is action in the face of fear and vulnerability that makes a good character. Humans struggle, suffer and fail. Women are subject to emotion, physically weaker than men and typically more compassionate....use that to draw on and build a character that fails, learns and rises. This is why Ripley was such a badass! She was strong and capable but she was just a woman, vulnerable and at huge risk herself. She wasn't juat running through ripping heads off the aliens like some roided up Arny.

I may have missed it in this video, but we do really need to highlight that Jackson had to extend Faramir’s involvement to make The Two Towers work. I think it was a very smart decision to do so, and I’m not bothered by how he portrays Faramir.

I went through a period of pitch-black depression as a teenager. Most of my family and friends (out of their best intentions) shamed me for not being able to hold it together. I truly felt like I was trudging through Mordor with no way out. However, I had one friend who stayed with me through it all. She never got tired of my foul moods and did her best to uplift me each and every day. It was like she saw through that miserable facade I got stuck with and believed in me at my brightest. Eventually, I got through. And now many years later I am brought to tears by the amount of gratitude I have. Our ability as humans to lift each other up is truly magnificent. And I am deeply touched by all the stories about kindness, even the smallest acts of it, for it can truly save a life.

I thought that The Last Jedi was a garbage film but the only thing I felt jarring about Holdo is that I couldn’t tell if she was an alien who looked like humans but had naturally purple hair or if she was a human with a dye job… and a flag rank in a military organization… yes my willing suspension of disbelief hinges on whether or not the rebel alliance has let military decorum fall to the side… That all said, if she was an alien (or had a normal hair color for a human) I dare say, I… liked her… yes she was condescending to Po… but she was justified… her boss’ last official action was to demote Po and she doesn’t know Po but she knows and trusts Leia. If anything I said “she’s like Captain Jellico from Star Trek”. She knows the job she has to do, she’s replacing the old familiar boss, and she’s coming in hot to desperate situation and doesn’t have time to develop a working relationship and trust that made the old boss beloved. Don’t get me wrong, The Last Jedi was still terrible, and Holdo is no saint… but to me, nothing she did that actually made me think she was unreasonable. I just didn’t like the fact that her hair was never discussed… and yeah, that’s stupid and took me out of the movie… and honestly I think she would have been better received had she not looked like she slapped grape jelly in her hai… but then I got to remember this is Star Wars… She’s replacing the Princess Leia “skin as white as snow, hair like a continental breakfast” Organa and daughter of Queen Padmea “Sephora Sales Associate Wet Dream” Amidala of Naboo… “dress conservatively” might have a looser definition in Star Wars. Again, she’s not the worst part of the film… but she’s handled far better than the other insufferable characters in that film.

@6:20 ish, you mention that perhaps it’s the consumers who are the ones who won’t consume “kids stuff” and need “mature stuff,” and it would be nice if the artists were the best of us and challenged their audiences Peter Jackson, Lord of the Rings trilogy (I’m sure this is super cliche to say by now but ima say it 😤), before those movies, fantasy films didn’t usually take themselves seriously, nor were they really for *everybody* to enjoy This series challenged “non-nerds” to enjoy fantasy Point is, if the artists can truly put in heart and soul into animation, mayyyyyybe people will stop their obsession with “adulting”

counter arguement to the final fowler fight; it's meant to be "done." Pure raw emotion and rage between both characters; fowler for having his plan completely ruined by mizu, and Mizu; completely believing that finally killing fowler would be the end. In the end it's not, obviously. Fowler, in attempt to piss Mizu off further reveals he knows things she doesn't. that even if she kills him, she won't have had her revenge. infact, killing him would only rob her of that revenge. And since Mizu is also driven by that revenge, agrees to hault her fight with fowler and reluctantly agree to work with him. also; Mizu's name means water, which is often times represented as fluidity as well as rage. so it's possible we're seeing the fluidity of her name being shown in her sudden choice to not kill fowler.
