Rant time. I love you all. I feel so tired and I know You do too. Lets keep going together. Tell me how Your salon is doing right now, in the comments. These past 4 Years have been so hard on all of us. Lets do our best to support each other and be kind. lets be kind while we all scream into the void together.
P.S. Know how low I am these days? I cant STOP LISTENING TO THE FRONT BOTTOMS AND I KNOW THATS THE SIGN OF THE END TIMES.

I am glad i am not the only one feeling this way. The secondary struggle we are facing is that we get to hear how much everyone who sits in our chair is dealing with as well.. let alone having our own drama and black cloud. The world is very overwhelming in general right now.

I started doing hair in 2018 right out of highschool, but ended up fully quitting last year. This was mainly because the work, the clients, and management would give me so much anxiety to the point of getting panic attacks on my way to work, but also because I just couldn’t for the life of me build and maintain a clientele. I couldn’t seem to attract clients, couldn’t keep them, couldn’t sell anything to them, and overall just couldn’t survive. So I have MASSIVE respect for you not only as a stylist that is somehow staying afloat (even if only minimally) in such an insane economy, but also as a business owner who has to support their stylists too on top of everything else. In hair school I dreamed of having my own salon like yours someday, but now it seems like hell on earth. So truly such an immense props to you for continuing on, trying your best for your stylists and your business, while still trying to consider your clients. You are everything that the hair world needs and should be. Even though everything feels awful and crushing right now, I hope that the knowledge that you have people rooting for you helps even a little bit. You’re amazing!

Guuurrrrllll!?!?!! You have just spoken all of the worries i have been feeling 😢. I work for myself, i travel around my surrounding counties and do hair in people's homes. It was already hard enough to get people to pay a travel fee plus the cost of the hair. Noooowwwww i need to go up soo bad!!!! 😭😭😭😭Im struggling so hard. I cant go up, people will not pay. What do i do?? Color went up, products EVERYTHING!! And no matter how much i try to explain that things went up, they dont want to hear it!!! I will loose them if i keep asking, but my husband is fed up with it! My clientele went way down after the pandemic. But ive clawed my way back up little by little, but folks are broke😢and they have resorted to cutting their own hair......im feeling you Crying in shower helps❤❤❤

I’m from Portland, Oregon, and my days are either fully booked, or there are copious amounts of last-minute cancellations/rebooks/no-shows and I have nothing. It’s been mildly exhausting feeling like I have to drag clients into the chair some weeks. Thank you for your honesty though, as a stylist who is struggling mentally with how to cope through these times, it’s nice to know I’m not alone 💚 Love your videos! 😊

Katie - I'm really surprised to hear this and really sorry. I'm not in the hair business, just a viewer. You are so talented, and I enjoy watching you always! I am in the US and the economy seems to be much better now than during COVID. Unemployment is low here, so I assumed working women were patronizing salons again. I hope things turn around for you and all other salons who are struggling. (BTW I have not seen you as a brunette until now, and so it was a bit of a shock, but you look great in any color! And your dog is so beautiful!!)

I definitely feel the impact of the economic crisis as well with my work, and it sucks when people cancel last minute and you don’t get paid, cause it’s money out of your pocket. As someone who’s been your client for years, I can tell you that you could charge me whatever you want to do my hair and I would pay it. Your work is valuable and I think a lot of your clients would feel that way too. Sending you all my love ❤️

I’m a stylist in the US and am feeling the same way 😭 I want to move back to my hometown, but I’m terrified to because I moved to a large city during the pandemic because I couldn’t make enough to live in my smaller city as a booth rental stylist. I make enough to live here now, but I hate it and want to go home so badly but I’m scared of going back to barely making it and trying to rebuild my clientele there, the pandemic really made the inequality in our society so obvious. I love this job, but I’ve thought a lot about switching careers since Covid started, it was so scary being shut down for Covid and having to find other ways to make ends meet while doing hair wasn’t possible.

Hi Katie -- You absolutely have to increase your rates come next year. This is what everybody is doing, and your clients will understand. If they can afford to pay $200-300 for a hair appointment, they can afford $225-325! You are one of the most talented stylists out there and your expertise/technique are amazing. But, it has a price. Know your value, and charge accordingly. BTW, I love the dark hair!

First of all: I really love the dark hair on you ❤ As a client it's super frustrating, as well. Food pricing have gone up 30-50%, my electricity bill has doubled compared to a year ago. Gasoline is so high, I am grateful for every day that I can do home office. I cut my hair myself now because I don't even know where to get the money for it. I also grow out my natural hair so I don't have to go to the hair stylist. But I would love to go.... in my case that would mean no food for a week 😔 I really hope that times get better ... I wish I could go to your salon one day (but I'm living in Sweden, so it's a few miles away 🙈). I wish you all the strength that you might need in these difficult times and lots of lovely clients ❤

But after all my life in salons , I needed more balance with my kids & so I built a salon detached from my home . I lost %70 of my regular clients bc my home is too far for most of my regulars to come to. So iv literally had to start rebuilding from scratch . And in this recession!! It’s hard AS FK! Iv spent $100k building a beautiful salon from my home & im a solo mum , ( I used divorce money) Iv had sleepless nights worrying . And the worst part , the public think a hairdresser working from home , should be cheaper !!!! Iv still got huge overheads , iv still got a roof to put over my kids head , food on the table , power , water , products , tools , insurance , godforbid im sick , to put away for having sick pay , or holiday pay But the public just think , “ well that’s your problem “

But it also didnt help when there were two managers that weren't professional and chased people off. Thats a whole another story by itself. And my goal is to be an independent Stylist working for myself but i dont want to sink myself. Also the prices at the salon is not expensive. I mean $20 for a senior haircut, to me anyone can come up with $20. Pick up cans or something take them to a recycling place.

Hello, I am sorry to hear your struggle, the economy in Canada sucks indeed, for the CEBA loan - you need to repay 30k + 10k by Dec 31 or Jan 18 (if you applied for an extension). This is if you want to keep 10k + 10k (if you applied for 40k + 20k). I am an accountant and all my clients are dealing with it now. You can arrange another loan from the bank to keep 20k from 60k and pay now 40k. If you can’t do it then the CEBA loan will convert to a term loan with full principal repayment due on Dec 31, 2026.

That is what keeps me afloat. its twice a year treatment that makes the hair frizz free and 70-90% more straight and that is all natural. it is a 4-6 hours treatment but you can charge 250-600$ depending on hair length. once they had it once, they will always comeback. i use a professional brand sold in Canada, USA and UAE called iPekPro

Just another comment -- I see that the Hair's the Thing podcast was discontinued -- will you be starting it again, or just publishing here? I was just listening to your Episode 5 and I am horrified that salons would ever tell people that a stylist was fired, even if it were true. Particularly in it isn't true, then they'll be making up an answer as to why. In the US, that stylist could have a legal action against the salon for defamation. Not a smart thing for any salon to do. "She's no longer with our salon and I don't have information on where she is" is more what I've encountered. It at least isn't trashing the stylist.

I can't afford to get my hair cut let alone colored, but I value your skills and expertise and would'nt expect you to charge less. Even though hair isn't a luxury, its a sick world we live in where people break their backs working and cant even afford housing or food. Yet the major corporations are lining their pockets completely unregulated or challenged. I hope everyone starts striking and unionizing and demanding a living wage. People in America including myself go without healthcare because we can't afford the bill. I hope that while you are struggling you look to your community and ORGANIZE and problem solve together. Is it striking, unionizing, raising awareness through peaceful protests? There are many people who will support you in these issues. And to those that won't. .... i pity them and their inability to see that injustice for some is injustice for all.
