Millions of people in the U.S. have to travel long distances for prenatal and postpartum care because they don't have options where they live. These maternity deserts are taxing to both the patients and the medical professionals who serve them.

My cousin is a Black Certified Nurse Midwife Practitioner. She was in California. She’s now in Virginia trying to open a birthing center. The environment was inhospitable for her to operate here. So far, she’s now being restricted from operating in Virginia. She is trying to fill a need. It feels like some people here just don’t want pregnant women to have quality care, especially if they don’t have insurance.

Good for her. Tell her she is needed and doing something that isn't going unappreciated.

In all cultures, the midwife's place is on the threshold of life, where intense human emotions, fear, hope, longing, triumph, and incredible physical power-enable a new human being to emerge. Her vocation is unique. Sheila Kitzinger It's not just the making of babies, but the making of mothers that midwives see as the miracle of birth. Barbara Katz Rothman

I think, based on where I have lived, the map at 3:15 underestimates the extent of the issue. Much more of New Mexico and Arizona are within maternity care deserts, for example.

Why do guys no longer make videos about Brazil? Although, the 2022 presidential election ended, I'm here to remember that the current administration - the one you guys supported and said that would save the Amazon rainforest - just broke another record in wildfire and deforestation this month, according to official agencies. Thank me later!✌

Hearing anyone use ‘pregnant people’ is so cringe how can you identify structural issues that impact a specific group of people if you don’t even identify who they are and why they’re targeted sorry can’t take this seriously if you can’t even talk about who is getting impacted and why also funny that this piece uses the insanely outdated, gendered ‘midwife’ --- that’s ok to use but god forbid we say pregnant women lol

No majority of people easpecally ones with any power are saying you can't say pregnant women lol, it's just an accurate medical term, actual material access to women's health care is being taken away by people in power and you're mad at random trans people as if anyone outside of your bubble even thinks about it please just be normal

Trans men can get pregnant, non binary people can get pregnant. To speak so broadly about pregnancy, while only regonizing women, would ignore a decent chunk of people who can be pregnant. Plus, in most facilities using this language you can simply opt out based on your prefrences.

Hello. I did this story. Boiling this down to a "red state" problem is inaccurate. As. you can see on the map, there's not a single part of the nation that's unaffected. This is a systemic issue with major implications for parents, children, and families. Identifying it as a problem in "backwards part of the country" is equally inaccurate and dismissive.

@@iiwrites I wish the news covered how pregnancy and birthing needs to be taken out of hospitals and put into birthing centers, where there are OBGYNs, midwives and doulas available. Covid made it clear that the hospital is not the place to give birth, especially when they were separating women who were pregnant from their partners (and medical advocates, should something go wrong) during this birthing process. Women should not be forced to give birth without ppl they love and trust surrounding them. Apparently, countries like Korea understand this and even have post-natal centers so that women can recover under the watchful eye of a knowledgeable caring staff. I looked up if post-natal centers exist in the US and found out there is one in Manhattan, of course, called Boram. We need the process of pregnancy, birthing and post-natal care taken out of the hospital. Hospitals are the reason why C-sections are more common than vaginal births, when it used to be rare prior to the 80s. C-sections cost more because they are a surgery, while shortening the stay of the patient so the hospital can make more money. I think a lot of Blk women are dying because of the unnecessary C-section rates, so this would also serve the Blk mortality rate during and right after pregnancy, as it is horrible. Please look into this as a journalist (I am one too)!

You can talk about lack of maternity care where 99% of the people affected are WOMEN, but you can't say pregnant WOMEN. Decide, do you care about this or do you not?

Millions of people also died giving birth or being born before we had all our modern care. Home births are a great option for some, midwives are fantastic. But in high-risk pregnancies or if something god forbid goes wrong (and the list of potential complications in childbirth is long, many being potentially deadly), people need realistic access to good facilities
